I'd throw in Los Lobos, maybe the best US band around today, and Sonic Youth who are still making a lot of good noise. The Blasters were a terrific live band, and played a song called "American Music".
Regarding The Band, they certainly played "American" music, which they learned in the Southern US (with all due respect to our fine neighbors to the North).

Yup Gazza, but ole Levon has more true Americana in the dirt under his fingernails than most of the other groups mentioned put together. Are you a fan? They never made a bad album - I even like Islands. The "recent" 3 (sans Robbie Robertson) are totally underrated I think. Jubilation in particular. When I listen to "If I should fail" it sounds like Rick Danko is saying goodbye to us all. So sad that two thirds of the "voice" of the Band have now departed. Did you read Levons book? Its a pretty good read. Anyway, maybe this should be a thread of its own!
What really galls me is that the USA has a great blues heritage.....and without looking nobody but nobody has mentioned any house bands such as Booker T & The MGs or Willie Dixon's band or Muddy's band or BBKings band.
All you lot have mentioned is some fly by nights like F**kin Aero F**kin Smith. Woop de F**kin Doo!!!
Get A Grip folks........do you see what I did there????
The Rascals The Byrds (Clarence White era) James Brown & The Famous Flames Steve Earle & The Dukes The New York Dolls Aerosmith The Chambers Brothers The Ramones Joey Dee & The Starlighters The Upsetters Elvis' road band (w/james, glenn, jerry and ronnie tutt) & any band Hal Blaine played in. and, oh yes, The Doors...

Hey NickB. Aerosmith "Fly by Night"?? They've been around 34 years and have sold just as many albums in the States as the Stones have. Just saw them in December and they still rock as hard as ever. As far as the bands you mentioned like Booker T and Muddy, I'm sure most on this board like them but wouldn't consider them their favorite. Also, the USA has a great country music heritage but no one has mentioned Patsy Cline, Willie Nelson or Hank Williams, etc.
Easy choice for me --today, that is -- the E Street Band.
However, for musical pedigrees, you'd also have to include The Band, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, and most definitely everyone who's been part of the Funk Brothers.

Oh, Lorenz, you HAVE led a sheltered life. Start with getting a copy of "The Last Waltz" on DVD.
Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band The Eagles Aerosmith Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band Sammy Hagar Ted Nugent Tommy Bolin Styx (shoot me,I like styx)
