Cleveland '02 revisited

Always thought Cleveland represented arguably the best non-theater show from the Licks tour. Listened again this week and my mind remains made-up on this. Very nice recording, and, unusual for Licks, the guitars occupy center-stage in the mix. And, one of their best-ever setlists - SCB on the b-stage! One of their best latter-era shows.

I was there. Great show. I even bumped into Mick as he was leaving the B-stage. How I wish there was a video of this show.

I had the pleasure of being there as well given its my home town. It was a great show.

Best Cleveland show since 81, or maybe 75 (?)

Definitely agreed. My favorite of the six shows I saw on the Licks Tour (though sadly, no theater shows). The 'Exile' set was aces.

agree with all of that. I think only Oakland and Wembley #1 rivals it as the best non-theatre show of that tour.

I wasn't there, but it was a HOT show judging from the boot. Stray Cat and Loving Cup smoked, and Rocks Off was probably my favorite live version they've done. I'd sell a family member to a sweatshop for a soundboard copy or a pro video of this one.

Globen, Stockholm wasn't too bad either?

That's also a great one apart from Stray Cat Blues, which Mick @#$%& up completely.

I think you talk about the Cirkus in Stockholm, July 22, 2003.

Nah. It was shite.

Seriously, yes I remember that as a good one too. In fairness, whilst everyone understandably raves about the Licks theatre shows, those arena shows were generally quite special too, werent they? They just tend to be overlooked because of how special the smaller shows were.

I got to see nine of them (MSG 1, LA at Halloween, Wembley x 3, Dublin x 2 and Glasgow x 2) and they were all consistently superb.

Personally, I thought the Globen show was the least exciting show of all three in Stockholm. In my opinion, average for an arena show in 02-03. Wembley #1 was brilliant.

i was at the Globen for that one and enjoyed every minute... meeting and chatting to Johnny Starbuck in the hotel bar, afterwards, was also v. memorable

As much as I loved Shepherds Bush and the Astoria, Wembley #1 (29.8.03) was simply the greatest out of all 41 Stones shows I've seen since 1982. Woody was particularly inspired that night.

True, musically the Ahoy arena show 2003 was better than the Vredenburg show the day after. Maybe something to do with the fact they played two shows on consecutive days? Must have been one of a very few aoccasions this happened in the last two decades or so.

it would have been the last time, Greg

They were supposed to play back to back nights at Amsterdam Arena, Twickenham and then at Wembley Arena in September but the 2nd A'dam and 1st Twickers show got postponed due to Mick's 'flu' and then the first of the back to back Wembley shows was brought forward 24 hours for some obscure scheduling reason.

Bottom line was that Mick was told around August 2003 not to sing back to back nights anymore.

The more I feel proud to have been there: the last time they played two night in a row, and the show with the worst @#$%&-up ever (Brown Sugar). I wonder if they're somehow related..
