Is the title "Honky Tonk WOMEN" or "Honky Tonk WOMAN"
Posted by: schillid ()

I believe that the title is "Honky Tonk WOMEN"... But a lot of people say "Honky Tonk WOMAN" ...

I noticed that RS.com sometimes calls it "Honky Tonk WOMAN", and other times it's "Honky Tonk WOMEN" on the setlists.

God, I hate all the people over the years who have called it Woman or titled it "Honky Tonk Woman" on their boots.

On another note: "Hip Shake" or "Shake Your Hips?"

Or 'Paint it, black' instead of Paint it black.

>> Paint it black <<

in most cases i'd say that (barring typos) what they put on the record/cover is what the real title is,
but since the Stones have always said that comma wasn't their idea (just ALO being controversial)
i count that one as a typo - deliberate, but a typo.

If it's a typo, why did they put it as "Paint it, black" again on Forty Licks album?

maybe for the same reason ABKCO reproduces all the mistakes on the cover of Let It Bleed
every time they reissue it.

I always thought it was Honky Tonk Woman simply because if you listen to the lyrics it sounds like he is speaking about one person.

Even if that's true (and I think it is)...

He could be singing about one woman in each chorus. Presumably the woman in the preceding verse...

And the title for the song would refer to all of these "Women".

smile: which one - the barroom queen or the divorcee, or the sailors in Paris?
and the refrain sounds distinctly plural (if "wimmin" isn't plural enough for some ears,
if it were singular, it would be "gives me", and it isn't.)

but anyway the title doesn't have to match the lyric; the title is whatever the songwriters wound up entitling it.
(ack: somethin's givin me the deja vu blues - we've had this thread before! CindyC should be chiming in any second.)

is this the original release? our cohort Sweet Neo Con posted it on that "rare covers" thread.

Fair point. But, "barroom queen" and "divorcee" (especially since "divorcee is preceeded by "a") sound pretty singular to me.

certainly (and it's a gin-soaked barroom queen as well) - but the refrain is distinctly plural,
and (more to the point) that record cover i posted up there sure looks like it says "women".

It's defininely an "E" on the record sleeve.

Yet many times on RS.com it says "Woman" (singular)... i.e. setlists.

I think this is simple enough on its face -- just listen to the song and you will hear "Women" regardless of whether he SEEMS to be writing about just one woman or whatever and regardless of how it may be printed on various covers or whatever.

This is getting to be another inane thread for bored people.

THE BAND NEEDS TO ANNOUNCE THE TOUR, PUT THE TICKETS ON SALE, AND THEN PROVIDE JOY FOR MILLIONS AND SOMETHING REALLY OF SUBSTANCE TO TALK ABOUT IN THESE THREADS AND POSTS!!! DAMN IT ANYWAY, THE WAITING.

THE PLEXIGLASS REIGNS SUPREME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Since when was RS.com the ultimate source of correct RS info?
They simply mis-spell it like many others.
The set lists write it like "woman", but it is still wrong.
You can't rewrite history or original names.
It is HONKY TONK WOMEN, and it has been like that always,
since it was released on vinyl ages ago.
