Way to go, Bono
Posted by: jeroen starink ()

Hi STONES Fans. Why be so hard on Bono?? At least he is not as arrogant as Jagger. His heart is in the right place. He does a lot of good work , and i really like U2's music. Not all of it, but the same goes for the stones music. Not all of it is great. i Think you must agree.
He cares for the world and he tries to make it a better place. you cannot say the Stones have done the same.
Listen, i've been a Stoens fan for 32 years, and a u2 fan since 1979.
Just take a look at the Stones, and their attitude, and then look at Bono/U2 and their attitude. they care for the world and give away a lot of money and help Amnesty etc. The Stones dont do this.
Well, i hope you understand what i mean. I respect Bono, i hope you will too!!
Stop critizing!! One Love, see you in Holland, at the next Stones concert.
Jeroen

Another man who is constantly ridiculed and critiziced is Sting, for much of the same reasons it seems. People are obviously very offended by rock stars who invest some of their time and money in something they are really concerned about. A very interesting phenomenon indeed.

"Not as arrogant as Jagger"

Really? By what measurement??

When has Mick come to a country that he did not live in and tell them how to run it? I must have missed that. Good grief!! Bono is insufferable!! Puleeze go back to your own 3rd world country and straighten them out--spare the rest of us, the pious routine---so, so tiresome.

Just go away.

The Stones are about the MUSIC--good for them--that's what they are--musicians, what a concept.

Bullshit, the Stones have done lots of charity work, they just don't self-aggrandize like Bono does.

EXACTLY, keith himself has said they do stuff that no one even knows about, lots of charity work, and just watch the four flicks bonus dvd "licks around the world" they were doing a show for global warming prevention, so to say they dont do anything is totally wrong, their just more descreet and dont want to be praised and full of themselves about helping others (plus they have that bad-boy image to keep up...hehe)

Bono is a self promoter extroidinaire! Who says he "gives away alot of his own money". All I ever here is how everyone else should give away their money....developed countries should "forgive" the 3rd world debt. Well, that "debt" came from someone...YOU AND ME. I may think twice when he announces that 200 million+ dollars is enough for him and that everything he does for now on will be donated to charity (after expenses is ok)....i dont think i will see that day. Similar to these other supposed "stars" who fly around in their private jets and private limousines telling us how we all need to drive electric cars because of "greenhouse gas emmissions"!

Bono, U2 and the Stones probably give away a lot of money to charity w/out making it publicly known.

Also, what people seem to be not understanding is that Bono is usually NOT asking for your money, he's asking for you to be aware and for us as citizens of our wealthy nations to let our leaders know that we care about other people and other countries. He's not asking you to donate money, he wants you to be part of the movement. I don't think that's a crazy thing at all to ask. And if you think it is, maybe you should do a little rethinking of who you are as a person. I'm not saying you need to join "a side", but just be more open minded and maybe think that Bono is actually trying to help people instead of feed his own ego. He's a great man and I respect him. I hope that I'm able to help people less fortunate that I am someday in such a successful way that he has.

Gazza--you are absolutely correct--that was completely out of line and I apologize. Not because I am, partially of Irish descent or loved my time in Ireland, but because I was flat-out wrong--very sorry.

Gazza is from Northern Ireland!

Two different countries on one island.

Ethipoia is more like a 3rd world country.

Yeah - and while he's out there fighting for the poor in Africa, he's at the same time creating a taxshelter for himself??

So who is going to pay for Africa - the government? And HOW does the government pay for Africa? Through the taxes......but obviously just off the common folks!

I used to like Bono.....but he's way out of his league now. And I just saw that he is being knighted - Jeez!! (And claiming that he's only accepting the honor in order to do some good for the world - well, he's hardly gonne be any more well known than he already is? I mean, when people think of Jagger - do they think of him as "Sir" or "Rock singer par excellence"?)

I think somebody once said "What a paltry honor"! And I totally aggree!!

Its a honorary knighthood.

He cannot use the Sir title as he is not British.

quite correct, I would imagine. What someone personally gives to charity is their own business and for their own conscience

also correct. If hes using his celebrity to raise awareness then its hardly a bad thing, lets face it.

Just playing my original 12" copy of Feed The World. Still gives me that cold chilling feeling as it did many years ago. Especially Bono's line which he said was so difficult to sing. He's OK, Mick's Ok and so are we. So let's spare a thought for those who don't have anything. Like FOOD. All these years later people dying for no reason. I,m glad I got my music. It's the only thing that makes sense to me these days. Happy holidays people. Like Bono said, Thank God It's Them. Ouch, that hurts!

I stand corrected on that point but the main point remains the same. They want the "government" or the "country" to give money to the poor - but most ´countries' income are dependent on the tax revenue - so it really helps that they have moved their money to a taxshelter.

There is another word for that: Hypocrisy!!

Well, kudos for Bono for doing a lot of charity work.On the other hand,he is also shamelessly promoting himself. Also he has given his support to some people whom we can thank for the state our world is in.He takes himself way too seriously and that's why he often makes very bad moves.

I am happy for him. Maybe now Bono will move back and pay his taxes to his countrymen giving him this paltry honor. Maybe now he will stop lusting over the US tax revenues. Maybe pigs will fly.

BTW, Bono the humanitarian and his investors just bought 40% of Forbes. His first act of business was to cut pension benefits and prevent new employees from joining. Helluva guy that Bono, once again screwing the working class for his own benefit.

If there is a bigger, more hypocritical con man in the world please tell me who his is. It is simply amazing how many people are duped by this egomaniac.

Not really, because you're presuming you know what he does with his own money.

Theres absolutely nothing unethical about legally taking whatever methods you can to pay less taxes. Especially so if you dont agree with what some of those taxes are used for.

What those who do that then do with the money theyve saved is for their own conscience and is their own business.

Hypothetical situation - given the choice of paying the government, say, $10 million of your own income to do what they see fit with OR putting it to good use in a way of your own choosing - what would you prefer? I'd take the latter option.

If he's keeping all of that money for himself then the 'hypocrisy' tag is pretty much justified - however you or I dont know that to be the case.

If I'm not mistaken the Stones gave away 1 million dollars to the victims of hurricane Katrina.

Been Stoned since 1964 and still am!

The problem with Bono is that he takes his good causes with him on stage. In november of 2005 I saw U2 for the first (and last) time in my life. I paid a lot of money and expected to see a good show. What a disappointment it was, at least 1/4 of the show was lost on Bono yabbing about this and that 'good cause' at some point there was even a silence for 2-3 minutes while the declaration of human rights slowly scrolled down the big screen. I don't disagree with his views but when I pay big bucks to see a U2 show, I don't want to be bothered with human rights and aids and how I should vote in the next election. --- A few months later I saw the Stones perform at the same venue. My friend, who is a BIG time U2 fan and saw both show as well, agreed with me that U2 still can learn a lot from the Stones when it comes to live performances.

U2 never said in the Vertigo tour who to vote for.

You are at cross purposes here. I'm not against tax shelters and tax schemes and what have we. They are there - they are legal to use. And God knows the Stones - especially Jagger - have used them for years. You'll be hard pressed to find a more complex system for income filtering and evasion of taxes than the Stones'.

I am a against a man who uses these tax shelters and THEN tells the government how to spend its revenue. And that's the issue here.
