Who did the better version? IMHO it's the Stones (the Beatle solo at the end is pretty nice tho)

smile: John & Paul knew what they were doing turning this one over to the Stones.
Keith's renditions with the Winos are a close second.

I think the Stones version has one of Bill´s hottest performances. After that it could only go downhill...

So...it went downhill after 1963 ?

Stones, no contest.

I'm a big Beatles fan, but their version is one of their weakest moments, IMHO.

The Stones' version, on the other hand, is... incendiary. It hits you like a f*cking freight train right from the get-go and then, when Brian's slide solo starts, forget it. Game over. Definitely my favorite pre-Chess recording, and it ranks with the best of the "early" era ('63-'65).

For sheer attack and aggression...Stones all da way.

NME - November 1963

The Stones version is by far the best. But let's pay a tribute to John and Paul for giving this song to The Stones - that's generosity.

smile: that's a very fine example of flogging one's wares - they got the songwriting royalties from it, after all.
they were writing a lot of stuff for other people to record, just like Keith and Mick did when they started writing.
but yeah, this was an absolutely excellent case of finding the right hands to turn a number over to.

By the Beatles standards of songwriting, I think its a little weak. As John Lennon was said about it "We wer'nt going to give them one of our best, were we?" However, I do really love the Stones rendition.

But the Stones made a raw fast champ out of it...a tune that takes no prisinors!!

So if John or Paul wrote it for Mick and the other boys, doesn't that make it a bit of a gay title?

Lucky then it wasn't PS I Love You...
But then again that was a supposedly a hidden nod to Buddy Holly's Peggy Sue...

Brian's slide solo, imo, settles any possible debate on this.

Well it is hard to compare after all they gave it to Ringo to sing.

Yes it does, as it proves that the Beatles' version is better.

so if i'm correct, the stones first release was "come on" which was quite more poppy than i wanna be your man...which was their second release, and also a hit...
i think 'come on' got to #21 right off the bat...
mick has described ' i wanna be your man' as a hit for them,
just curious if anyone knows, how did it chart in comparison?

>> how did it chart in comparison? <<

according to Martin Elliot it went to number 12.

Brian's playing is great on that track, the solo sounds so wonderfully raw and exciting! I wish he hadn't lost interest in playing guitar!

I'd just like to add that Brian's slide solo was perhaps the first of its kind, a 1963 fusion of blues slide, rock, and some distortion. For its time, it was out-of-this-world stuff.
