Keith's Dan Armstrong.

The one he used in 1969. Was it this one? [www.ampeg.com]
It seems that it's the only glass body guitar you can get on Ampeg's website.

as i understand it the two Keith had in 69 were prototypes. there's a photo of them on this page:

after they were stolen, he replaced them, presumably with non-prototype versions, but wasn't happy with the replacements.

Thanks. I'm hoping to get one of these sometime (But it's hard to find a retailer in Denmark). Along with a cool amp it's my wet dream.

You can directly order them from Japan, and even with all taxes added it will be cheaper than buying them from a retailer in Denmark.

For real? And the quality of the guitar is the exact same? How much would it cost you reckon? I saw a place that sold one for 20.000 Kr. That's around 3000$.

I haven't played these new ones yet. I would expect a simular quality to the original ones, allthough the hard rock maple for the neck, and the Brazilian rosewood used in the 1960's was of a quality that is encredibly rare and expensive these days. But generally speaking, it will be of around the same quality. Hey, if it's good enough for Ron Wood, it's good enough for us!

They go for $1400 in the U.S., so expect to pay around $1000 when ordered directly in Japan.

Iv'e got one, but it's not good. Had to replace the neck, but still not good. The sound is increadible, but it's impossible to get it tuned. It's an original. I'm very very sad, because it's so cool!

as far as i know, the original dan armstrongs were given by ampeg to musician bying a lot of ampeg amplifiers.

so probably they gave a guitar to keith and a bass to bill.

and maybe the first promotional series were different to the commercial series ?

I think they look ugly and cheap. I remember being kinda shocked the first time I saw pics of Keith with one. He certainly made em sound good though!

smile: in The True Adventures of the Rolling Stones, Stanley Booth wrote something like:
"In a world full of guitars made of rare woods, lacquered in beautiful colors and inlaid with gold, mother-of-pearl and tortoiseshell,
Keith Richards chose to play one that looked like it was made of dried gelatine." :E

I've got a '69 and love it.Bought it about twelve years ago for $1000 Canadian.I've never had tuning problems with it and the sound, though kind of one-dimensional, is definitely good and raunchy. Lots of other guitar heroes over the years have played them as well ie. Johnny Thunders, Wayne Kramer, Joe Perry, Tom Verlaine, Cyril Jordan, Greg Ginn and, more recently, Dave Grohl, to name a few.

I tried one out in Denmark Street in London the other day. It was £1200 and well worth it. The pickup changes out without needing to re-wire or take the strings off (single coil / humbucker).

I didn't buy it so it night still be there. If not, they were planning on buying some more.

perhaps this is why Keith was so out of tune on the 1969 Tour ??

Thanks. Remember when we talked about fretboards some time ago? You told me that when I buy a cheap(-ish) guitar, the fretboard is always made out of cheap tree and metal. That's not the case with this one I hope?
BTW: What more would I need to get the 1969 guitar sound? I mean if I got the Dan Armstrong. What amp should be used? Pedals?

I guess the guitar is made from good materials, but probably not as good as the original. Dan Armstrong wanted to build a guitar that was always of equal quality and tone, and could be build fast and cheap. This was the reason he choose perspex for the body and Canadian hard rock maple for the neck. However, after almost 40 years, all the really good hard rock maple is gone, and if you can find it, it really is expensive. So, nowadays only the real expensive Custom Shop guitars uses wood that is comparable to wood used in the 60's. BUt still, the Japanse use good wood and are excellent craftsmen, so I would expect a really good guitar.

In order to get that Keith sound, you only need an Armstrong guitar and an Ampeg V2, V4 or SVT. That's all, no pedals are needed.

Thanks for all the info. One last thing though: Can you redirect me to a Japanese website where I can buy one of these Dan Armstrong guitars (In order to get the tax advantage and low price)? JustInCaseBandDK and I are both thinking of buying Dan Armstrong guitars and thought that it would maybe get even cheaper overall if we ordered the guitars together.

And BTW: What's "best out of V2, V4 and SVT?

I would contact Ishibashi, and do a search in www.google.co.jp.

About the amps: A V-2 or VT-40 (a V2 with 4*10 speakers) are best, as they have the lowest power rating and won't blow your ears out. V4's and VT-22 are good to, but you'll need an extra power soak. SVT's are just too big these days for guitar. They're excellent for bass though.

Actually, it was a shop on Charing Cross Road just around the corner. It has a bit downstairs selling hi-tech recording gear and a guitar shop upstairs. Just head south from Denmark St and you'll find it.
