Depends on what you mean by big. If you mean sales Steel wheels was double platinum. HTDAAB was triple platinum? Not a huge huge difference.
If you mean quality I'm not so sure that HTDAAB was so much better than Steel Wheels anyway. They were judged using different criteria. People often compare all Stones albums to Exile, Sticky Fingers etc. unlike other artists who are held to a much lower bar.
Even if you are right though it is a little misleading since the Stones were at a creative low point around their twenty fifth year and have since put out much better albums in my opinion.
There is no guarantee that U2 will put out anything as good as Voodoo Lounge when they are in their fifties or as good as ABB when they are in their sixties. Their latest song (not the one they played in New Orleans a few weeks ago, the other one off the new album) sounds like a beach boys outtake. Even a lot of U2 fans are disappointed in their last few studio albums.

I like U2, but their latest song off their new singles compilation is trite. I'm talking about Window In The Sky.

I think the sales of U2's last album are actually around 8-10 million....

I was just comparing the US numbers for SW and HTDAAB since I didn't have the total sales numbers. Think SW was 2 million in the US- not sure what is was worldwide.

Perhaps he is gearing up for "Rocky Balboa"- in theatres Dec. 22.

keith will never go for that - i'll never forget the look he shot bono during the aragon show when bono starting singing over keith's solo!
Musically speaking, I don't think that U2 are the next Rolling Stones. Even though U2 do have many great songs and a great sound. Personal preference...
The Stones got huge around 1965. The Stones were on top -- undisputed -- merely seven years later. Today, U2 has been around for over twenty years. They will be past their prime, when and if the Stones are no longer around,
I really admire Bono for using his celebrity presence and speaking up about certain issues. That's aside from the musical question.

Well, the Stones ticket prices are much higher...which I hope U2 doesn't follow suit... U2 tix are generally speaking $50 for floor (G/A), $170 for lower level and $100 for upper level.
But when the Stones are done, it will leave U2 as the super group that has massively grossing world tours and popularity left...that's the subject here, not that U2 is better than the Stones, no.
Some posts within this legendary thread claimed that U2 is not a Rock N' Roll band...I think their 2005 induction in to the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame dictates otherwise.
ABB is a decent recording all in all, I think it will be appreciated more as time marches on. Still, who wants to hear new shit at a show? We want WARHORSES baby!!! lol ;-)
"Having been to both Stones shows in Oz this year, I saw U2 last week in Melb and they were boring, I couldn't connect with the show at all and the political messages were getting a bit tiresome. Big difference in Bono's ability to keep a crowd on its feet compared to Jagger - no contest with Jagger & the Stones miles ahead of anyone else. "
The crowd stays on it's feet at Stones shows in Oz? It's probably the other way around in the states though I haven't been to a U2 show since 1992.
" am more worried about who is going to follow Prince, Springsteen and U2, those are almost the last big time guys that have that rock and roll blood in them. "
That's something to worry about? From my POV there is very little rock and roll blood in arenas and stadiums. Personally the classic rock acts dying out may be bad for the concert industry if you are a promotor but might be a great thing for rock music as a whole.
"There is no guarantee that U2 will put out anything as good as Voodoo Lounge"
Doesn't sound too difficult to be honest. For any band that is.

In The U.S., Stones arena tours had an average price of almost twice U2 (though U2 sold out the full 360 without any seats blocked), but in Europe it was about even with U2 selling far more tickets.
