Not so OT: Drinkers

Who likes their alcohol? I drink beer, and I like it. How often do you drink? Do you do it only socially, or do you drink alone?

How many of you have said, to yourself or friends, I can stop any time I want to, but not right now?

How many of you regard a topic like this as a joke? Yeah, if you can't handle your liquor, let me handle it for ya yuk yuk.

Is alcoholism a disease ?

Is AA effective?

What are the alternatives?

Is alcoholism a disease ? ABSOLUTELY!

Is AA effective? For some people, not the one I knew who went.

What are the alternatives? I've known a few people who were able to quit on their own, when they got close to f*ing up and ruining their families. One thing I remember that seemed to help this guy was never ever keeping any sort of alcohol in the house, so his wife basically had to stop too although she had no problem. The used to keep alcohol around in case they had visitors, but the guy would drink that too, so they didn't have any for visitors either. They thought it would be rude, but people understood.

As for me, I like glass or two of champagne a few times a week, it's not just for celebrating! I am also enrolled in the StonesTod Whiskey 101 course, he's a good teacher.

Wasn't looking too good, but I was feeling real well.

If you are a low but regularly consumer of alcohol like I am why on earth should you quit?

Wine, beer, champagne and an occasional hard drink are o.k. but as soon as you try to solve any problems by drinking you will immediately be a slave of the bottle.

Why do people always discuss only the alternative between heavy drinking and quitting entirely? My consumption of alcohol certainly does neither shorten my life nor does it destroy my family. I never started to drink more in times of crisis.

Bassplayer, are you asking for help in this matter?

God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
The courage to change the things I can.
And the wisdom to know the difference.

Amen.

I used to have to recite that about a dozen times a day. Once the booze gets a grip it doesn't matter whether you're Keith Richards or some 9-5 Joe Blow. It usually ends in sorrow.

By the way this isn't a holier than thou lecture, just something I thought I'd share for anyone interested or who might be under the cosh.

"I'll be in my basement room with a needle and a spoon."

I drink lager and probably do so 3 or 4 times a week. I haven't had a drink since Tuesday, so I'm due a few tonight. If I'm just popping in a pub with my paper hower, I'll usually have a Guinness or two

I think we all know of cases where alcohol has consumed either a partner, friend of family member. It's a terrible drug for not just the addict but the family aswell. Saying that I love nothing more than a beer and a fag on a Friday night!

I love a good cold beer, but I'll pass on the fag - both meanings of the word.

I would not say that I'm a heavy drinker, but I tend to drink at least one beer or glass of wine every evening.
I drink more when I'm with friends and sometimes I drink 6 beer or so when I watch a good film and listen to some music on my MP3-Player afterwards.

Oh, Erik -- I'm knocking down a few right now and listening to some damn fine mp3s-- the 256kbps tracks from "The Definitive Brussels". I'm still amazed by the quality of those. (Wink and smile).

Well, it's better to have MP3s of bootlegs, than not having those bootlegs at all.
...And the ears looses their fine adjustments after you've reached 20...a slight degrading every year, so when you've reched 40, I guess it doesn't matter wether you've got LP, CD, MP3s or a live band in front of you.
Just don't let your denture fall into the beer !

Is it worrying if i enjoy a good shot of Jack Daniels at parties at the age of 17?

No not at all, your off to a good start. At this rate you will be dead by 21 anyway. Keep on partying.

Oh, well, I think it's absolutely allright to enjoy whiskey at 16. As long as you never get drunk....it's not a good thing to loose control, no-matter what age you are.

But the question is: is there control to begin with, if you can not control losing control...?

I recently got reaquainted with the demon drink "vodka martini" (nothing to do with JB I'm afraid) and am enjoying one right now after being beaten in Ludo by my son and enjoying "Love Train" off of Four Flicks ....and after that ...perhaps another ;-)

Well the more you drink, the closer you get to loosing control. In other words, you'll have to know your limits...not waiting for yourself to loose control.
It's silly to be an amoeba....it doesn't serve no purposes.
I used to enjoy a drink of whiskey when I was 16...but a lot of people at that age feel the urge to become Wasted.
