I suppose if the show was cancelled because Mick was found dead people would still complain. They are only human.

Nonsense. Its somewhat more likely however that if some people came home and found the Stones assaulting their kids and burgling the contents of their house, they'd find some way of excusing it.

Their activity this week is evidence that this cancellation was preventable. To state otherwise is nonsensical in the extreme.

"noting that Jagger had always had a weak voice," "he has to be careful if he wants to sing night after night, we'll just have to get rid of him if necessary." Eric Easton discussing the Stones recording with the BBC in 1963 for the first single, Come ON. BBC also claimed Jagger either "too black or just not good enough" take your pick. From Andrew Loog Aldhams book Stoned p 214, publ in 2000. Quite good read with music history in London 50's 60's prior to the Stones.
Oldham as the fist manager was an amazing teenage hustler. Brash and irreverent at the time! He was blown away seeing them in Richmond Station Hotel and know what he wanted to do.

Gazza, I know your the thread's title was written a bit prematurely (before we could know all the facts), but your most recent post on the thread is slightly off; that is, the show wasn't cancelled. It was postponed.

Painful as that may be for ticket holders and as bad as the timing was, it's not the end.

They are committing to play the gig again. The fact that people travel long distances to see them is particularly painful, no question, but the Stones can hardly be blamed for that--and they are coming back to play for fans in NJ. In fact one could make the argument that the band's done a rather reasonable job of getting out to their fans with more than 100 shows on every continent (save Antartica) since Aug, 05.

figure of speech then - postponed it is. It still didnt happen, regardless...and it IS the end for quite a few who dont live locally and wont get their flights and hotels reimbursed, and especially grating when the circumstances behind the postponement are somewhat shady to say the least (I've now amended the initial post to read 'postponed' - I didnt realise I could do this otherwise I would have done so by now)

>In fact one could make the argument that the band's done a rather reasonable job of getting out to their fans with more than 100 shows on every continent (save Antartica) since Aug, 05.

yeah..they sure did....4 in australasia, 3 in south america, 6 in Asia, 19 in Europe.... and about 80 in North America...

BTW - sorry to hear you couldnt get to the art exhibit last night, Camper. I heard it was really good.

If only the fans could see events from the bands point of view. How do we know that Mick has a sore throat because he should have rested it when first told? Maybe he wanted to please the fans. Unless you 3pp are a close friend of his then we can only form opinions.

The man has been told several times not to risk his voice by singing on successive nights. Common knowledge.

Does it not strike you therefore as a bit irresponsible and ill-judged to spend , what, 3 nights in a row before the Atlantic City show, engaged in rehearsals at the Beacon?

Does that not give you the impression that he was putting the Beacon media-fest and prospective DVD first as opposed to a tour concert that some 12,000 of his fans had bought tickets for?

people take ill. As you correctly say, theyre only human. I've had shows postponed before (which I couldnt go back to) and accepted it at the time for what it was. I'm not one of those conspiracy theorists who thought that they pulled the shows in Spain so they could be OK for London. The reports were that he was struggling vocally at the previous show in Portugal. A believable story IMO. However, this has all the hallmarks of something that could have been prevented. I wish I was wrong. Its also quite evident that this show was known to be off several hours before they made the official announcement - more fuel to those who are of the opinion that the fans matter least of all.

as for your initial comment of "If only the fans could see events from the bands
point of view" - how about turning it the other way round for once and asking "if only the band could see events from the fans' point of view" ? They seem oblivious to the fact that when they pull a show its a lot more inconvenience than just rescheduling a date for a local audience who havent invested in a lot more than just a concert ticket

Gazza, you are obviously better informed than me. It's only my opinion. But I,m sure we don't get all the facts. Maybe because we wouldn't like them. But IMO a band of their years at this stage of their tour is as Charlie would say is staggering.

Dont get me wrong. I agree with what youre saying that its great theyre still around. I just think theyve handled this quite shabbily.

How many blokes on this earth are in their 60's, going to construction jobs five days a week? Doing hard physical labour?

I appreciate The Stones, but please, any of us blokes would trade their "tough" lifestyle in a minute.

The problem with a postphoned/cancelled show is that there are 50,000 or more tales of woe. Booked flights, hotels, days off work. This may sound unacceptable but it's not the bands fault that so many arrangements have fallen through. The Stones don't ask people from far away to attend. They only announce the venue.

But I'm sure of this. When they call it a day I for one will be very sad indeed. And I'm sure we will all miss this conjecture and banter about postponed shows etc.

I generally agree, except that AC, like Vegas and a few other places, are NOT places that are normally filled with locals. They are destination spots where one would expect most attendees to be from out of town. They are probably the WORST dates to postpone/cancel. That said, they're also decent places to hang out in too, which lessened the blow for me, being only about a 4 hour drive away, but for those who flew in....wow, postponing this one was very costly to many diehard fans.

Guys if Dodger Stadium is going to be moved to the 19th of Nov why havent they announced it yet?

I may be insane, but I still think they actually will play these shows back to back....coast to coast. If we don't hear anything to the contrary within 72 hours, I think it's a virtual certainty. Of course, it's just a gut feeling.

Re: Atlantic City postponed!

maybe they havent figured out what date its being changed to... as I just mentioned in another thread, theres talk it could be put back by as much as 3-4 days with Honolulu being cancelled. Hopefully not. That would be a disappointing way to end the tour.

I honestly dont think theres a chance in hell of that happening, but hopefully they'll put everyone concerned out of their misery soon

With no intention of taking part in this discussion
beacause (as with the Keith-debate a some/a page[-s] before)
I lack too many parameters in the scenario;
I would for certain not trade to this in my eyes,
severely tough lifestyle. No matter how luxurious the hotels are,
travelling on the job is hell imho. The soul cant keep it up.

I think the focus has been on AC only because these attendees are the only ones affected right now. All the LA and HI talk is only that right now....talk.

If this were the middle of the tour, I'd agree with Gazza and most everyone else that they can't go with the announced dates. But AC, LA, and HI would be the last three dates before a long vacation. They can pull it off. Jet lag

The could cancel all poor selling shows, and just play the ones that have sold out.

So:

10/29 Beacon
10/31 Beacon
11/02 Vancouver
11/11 MGM Las Vegas
11/14 Boise, Idaho

and That's it!

Then, when they get home, they should fire their management.

Atlantic Cty is sold out , Why the omission ?

I just got back from Atlantic City. To say I am devastated is an understatement.
For those of you with jobs, wives and kids, you can appreciate the effort that goes in to arranging your schedule to go to one of these shows, not to mention airfare, hotel etc. etc.

I found out the show was cancelled at about 3.00 PM from Dweezil Zappa who was doing a press conference in the Hotel to promote his own show that night. ("might as well come see me since the Stones are cancelled")

The Casino was nice enough to give me a good ticket for the Zappa show which was OK, I guess but nothing like what I missed.

To top things off, my flight home was canceled yesterday due to bad weather and I only just got home.

What a disaster!

Re: Atlantic City postponed!

Where was Dweezil playing ? I would have loved to see that show .

I drove home from AC . The rain was torrential . I drove north to Massachusetts . I saw at least 20 autos off the road most likely from hydroplaning . My cruise control was set @ 45 mph and nobody was going much faster !

At least 10 crashes were seen , the scariest one was a guy spun out in front of me , rear ended a Jersey Barrier and came to rest in the center lane of the Garden State Parkway . I just missed that car on his right hand side and just missed the driver sprinting accross the highway . SCARY STUFF
