And don't forget their surprise club gig in Iran in '82 under the name Johnny Jihad and the True Believers. Most of the crowd weren't into it, though; they only came because they misunderstood the posters promising the stage show would feature a killer display of pyrotechnics.

They were going to bring some honky tonk women but couldn't find any whose ankles weren't exposed.

The Stones would think about it if they could. After all, apart from the fact that they wouldn't be allowed to play there, what else would stop them? Maybe there would be protests but I don't know enough about the locals to call that one.

All I know is that they have played in some other "dodgy" places in the past - e.g. China recently. They played in communist countries during the Cold War too.

It won't happen at the moment, of course. But if the Stones were to roll for another 5 years (which I doubt) then who's to say what the future holds. Maybe U2 or someone equally boring will be first to play Iran.

(Anyone know if any western (major) bands played before the revolution?)

Of course people would come if the Stones were allowed to play there. Iran is a highly secular country. The values of the genereal population has nothing to do with fundamentalism.

Why not? They play in some bloody redneck states in US as well. If those guys accept some long hair, twisted moral English men, why not some other fundamentals as well?

Are we that naive to believe that the entire Iranian population is oblivious to western culture, specifically rock music?

If history has taught us anything its that you can suppress people and their freedoms, but music in all its forms will always endure.

Just because the media shows organized pro-government rallies in hick towns and a leader who rants anti US rhetoric as its only source of activity in Iran, don't underestimate the presence of Stones cds and material within the society.

There are educated and intelligent people in the population.

I also heard repeatedly that young people in Iran are rather Westernized; I also read somewhere that there's quite a black market for rock music (especially from a few years back). Hard to say what "Westernized" means in that context. There might be some curiosity about Western culture, but that doesn't mean there are a whole lot of gin-soaked barroom queens in Teheran. My guess is that if they were to play there (which will never happen), you would see a lot of people at the show. But that would probably be due to the novelty of the whole thing, not to the presence of any real interest in the band itself.

Hope no one gets offended, but I did the unthinkable and actually asked some Iranians (most anti-Ahmadinejad but some pro) at my J.O.B.

Responses:

1. Ticket prices would need to be under $100 on average. Millions of Iranians can afford this, millions can't.

2. They would sell out any venue in Tehran, no questions asked.

3. The assumption is that they would have the government's blessing to play. President Ahmadinejad's office would certainly oppose it. The Council of Guardians would oppose it. But if the Supreme Leader (the current big Ayatollah) had no comment (50-50 probability), it could happen.

4. They would need to play 'Paint It Black.'

5. They would need to play 'Satisfaction.'

6. Iranian women would get seriously dressed up for the event.

7. If the Pasdaran (Revolutionary Guard) showed up, it could get very ugly outside (or even inside) the venue. Probably the Stones management and Iranian officials could 'come to an agreement' to prevent this from happening.

8. Mick would have a 50-50 chance of getting laid.

Not that its entirely relevant, but Freddie Mercury was of Iranian descent I believe.

They played in Istanbul 1998. Total crowd 15,000 people, in a city which is around 18 million people, i.e. one of the largest in the world. Turkey is all muslim. The Stones and their music did not fit in. They are not known. The people have a different taste of music. They are not "Sympathy For The Devil" kind of people. They don't go out in the streets saying "Ohhh Ohhh etc. Only Paint It Black had a certain touch in the crowd, because of it's oriental sound. If they were to perform in another muslim country I would assume they would choose Indonesia or some other place where at least some of the people would have heard about them.

We have a tv-channel here which is a blast-full of Turkish
disco and such music videos.

Music & politcs shouldnt be confused with each other, netiher should politics
an religion. Turkey is ruled in a dictatoric way, and the atmosphere is
very ethnocentric and chauvunistic (as, to a large extent, in US or
oin many other Western countries). But they listen to music with many Western elements. And the ladies are bare, I assure ya.

Still, 15,000 at a stadium show is a pretty clear indication that the band won't be returning to that part of the world any time soon.
