The Tony Sanchez one is amusing. It reads like the National Enquirer. Can't go wrong with Stanley booth.

S.T.P., Robert Greenfield
Up and Down, Spanish Tony
Phelge's Stones.
The first David Dalton, "Unauthorized", book from 1972 or so is very good.

You'll never get closer to what the original Rolling Stones were all about, personally, individually and musically than Stanley Booth's book. Most of his insights still apply

Robert Greenfield's book on the making of Exile on Main Street will be published in late November.

One of the things Thats really good about Bill Wymans Rolling With The stones is how it covers the music scene they were apart of in the Early days. And it has fabulous pictures. A must have.

There is a book on Exile on Main Street in the 33 1/3 series of books on classic albums. Nicely written, full of interesting facts about an album that has never gotten boring over the past 34 years.

The Jean-Marie Moreau home made book titled "US Tour '78" is a great read. When you get it, it's just copies printed from a computer, but man he has done a very good job. Mainly it consists of articles from papers from 1978, but there's also great reads made by fans (From RocksOff and Shidoobee I think). Get it. Highly recommended.

Also "According to The Rolling Stones" and "A Life On The Road" are good. It's pretty much the same book and stories though. "According to..." digs deeper than "A Life...", but "A life..." has the best pictures in it.

Yes, I agree it is very nice. Jean-Marie Moreau has also done a book in the same style covering the 75 tour. Also very nice.

Hey. I didn't even know he made that '75 book. When I get some money (In a slump at the moment) I'll get that book.

Read Nick Kent's peerless essay in The Dark Stuff. I think it's the best thing ever written about The Stones post-Exile. It stops at around Steel Wheels and is - unfairly - dismissive about the post-Exile output (especially Some Girls and Tattoo You), but you get a fairly accurate depiction of what Keith and Mick were actually like in the 70s. Mick doesn't come out of it remotely well.

The Dark Stuff also has an incredible piece on Brian Wilson too. Anyone with even a remote interest in music should get it. Seriously.

Boston, while all the titles mentioned are very good IMO there are some books that are so well written, and paint such a detailed, honest picture that they have taught me more than some of the "big" titles:
"All the Rage" by Mac and the autobio by Marianne Faithful. Both of them are about other stuff as well, but the parts about the Stones are priceless. Also the Keith bio by Barbara Charone is excellent. Very intimate in a way.
The out of print oversized book by Davied Carr is great, as is the old dalton book. The grey one that only goes up to Exile. That one is GREAT!
And don't underestimate some picture books. EG the 75 US Tour by Leibowitz/Southern is tops. I can gather a lot by staring a ceratin photos.
The small book about "Performance" by McCabe is superb.
The book on Exile by Perry too.

I could never afford the expensive Genesis pressings although I have seen several firsthand, and also what I have seen of Tarle's Exile and the new TOTA 75, they are also msuts.
"Rock on Wood" was pretty cool too.

Old Gods Almost Dead is frightfully interresting. Chet Flippo's book from his on the road-experience is great! A great writer, that one - Rolling Stone-writer! Christopher Sandfords bio on Keith is written with love and awe - which in this case - I just love! Then there's Marianne Faithfull's bio, which she wrote with David Dalton. I'll read them all again, actually. And everything I can come across. If you don't want to buy them, go to the library! That's cheaper.

ahh, the monthly book-recommendation thread! as always: Chet Flippo's book, under whatever title -
most editions seem to be called something like On the Road with the Rolling Stones.
i rate it just under Stanley Booth's, which is the best.
like Stanley, the cat was there at crucial moments, he's got intelligent ideas, and he can really write.

You got it right! And he's a very nice person, too, according to a friend of mine who met him in the late 70's.

He's in that '78 tour book I mentioned then. He followed the Stones on some USA dates back then. Mick cuts him out of the equation though.

Not only is he IN IT. He wrote it...

Yes I know. As I wrote before the book consists of old newspaper articles. Chet Flippo wrote the bit from Rolling Stone, which is in this book.

No disres[ect to shidoobee but IMO "Old Gods: is one othe worst books on the Stones. Chet Flippo and Booth's books are excellent but both had already been mentiuoned in the thread.

I still think Old Gods Almost Dead is quite funny... Probably even true. Frightfull. Venerial diseases etc. Attempted suicides, overdoses... When it comes to litterate qualities - it falls through, but entertainment wise... Great.
And no distress! But most of the books here have been mentioned at least five times. I just mentioned my personal favourites.

Has there been some book mentioned in another thread, this one about the making of LIB?

Well, I've read Stephen Davis' Old Gods Almost Dead, According To The Rolling Stones... and now most recently Cristopher Sandford's Keith Richards - Satisfaction. Also I have some photo books of The Stones.
Now, this last one (Satisfaction)... I had quite mixed emotions, every once in a while it seemed as if it had a production of The Sun or something similar. What do you think about this book?

as well as being so frightfully appallingly researched. Which would automatically make you question the validity of almost any 'revelation' he comes up with, wouldnt you agree? One of the worst books I've ever read on the Stones. Wouldnt recommend it to anyone who wants to know anything about the band.

agree on that one. A personal favourite of mine, too.

Think thats the one by Sean Egan. Its not bad, but I wouldnt call it essential. Theres more to it than JUST the story of how they made the album, though - so the title is a little misleading
