Worst rendition of a warhorse

1. I'd say IORR post 1976, it really sucks in my opinion; all the recent live versions have nothing to do with the studio version.
2. Brown Sugar, still powerful, but I could live without extensions to Midnight Rambler length with the backing singers permanently repeating "Brown Sugar" in falsetto voice.
IMHO the best versions of Brown Sugar since 1982 were performed during Licks as opener or B-stage-closer.
3. Satisfaction. One of the best songs ever, killer riff, but I don't want to hear the horn section and backing vocalists in it.

Oh, I forgot Sympathy For The Devil; the song should at least feature the full lyrics.
Mick, sing only half of Rough Justice instead!! LOL

I must be an idiot but what lyrics do they leave out of Sympathy? If you are asking which one I could definetely live without its Miss You. But I don't think it's played all that bad, I'm just really sick of it. As far as the worst played, I don't really think any of them because they play them every show so they should be good at it. It's not a warhorse but I think recent live renditions of Beast Of Burden are awful.

I dont like brown sugar from 75-76. JJF from that era isnt very good either.

Jackass, have you ever wondered who shot the Kennedys ?
That should answer your question.

They skip the "I shouted out who killed the Kennedys" verse.

It's Only Rock 'n' Roll is a crappy song in my opinion. On the record, live, whatever. It just sucks. The lyrics are legendary but they don't really make sense. It's only rock 'n' roll but I do rip you off with 150 dollar tickets, you know.

IORR totally blows most of the time. Sometimes they nail it but often just sleepwalk it. Sometimes SFTD sounds killer but lately its been pretty weak, especially with the extended intro and missing lines.

Re: Worst rendition of a warhorse

Many of the warhorses didn't sound good in 1976 - Brown Sugar and Jumping Jack Flash (somehow they managed to make this song unlistenable that year) are the most obvious examples.I must be in the minority on this one but,I have never been a big fan of IORR from '76 either. Those versions sound even less like the actual song than any other versions. The version from the video is great. The best IORR's in my opinion were the extended closers in 2005 but,I feel it should be dropped soon because, there is not much else they can do with it and because it has been played so many times since 1989.Everyone has heard the story enough times.
This year, the worst played warhorses are Miss You,Tumbling Dice, and Sympathy.

I dont know, I dont think IORR is that bad. its not one of my favorites, but its fine. I actually like the version on LYL. the bridges to babylon dvd version is good too IMHO.

Worst warhorse live is 'Satisfaction'. I have never seen Keith play it with any real conviction. They murder that song.

Second on the list is 'It's Only Rock and Roll'. It's not one of my favorites to begin with, but it is terrible live. It's not a huge warhorse...I think it only came back into sets in the late 80s...but it sucks live.

Other live songs I may hate (Miss You, Beast of Burden, She's So Cold) but they at least do a decent job of playing them.

You should have been in Albany last year for Satisfaction and/or at Fenway Park for IORR when Richards pulled out every Chuck Berry influenced riff in the book - not my idea of a rendition that sucks. What about Satisfaction during the '97/'98 tour?
Miss You,on the other hand,is just not what it was 25-28 years ago.Tumbling Dice has been butchered frequently on this tour and Sympathy sounds too fake these days but, maybe it's me.

Alright this is easy. JJF, I think from 89 when they did the MC Hammer OH OH OH OH at the end.

How on earth did Keef EVER allow that........

don't give me that ole one two, one two three four

SFTD doesn't sound passionate. Sounds fake is good description someone stated. Its always been my fav studio song & loved live in old days. Could do without these days. Also Miss You sounds tired. MEZ

Miss You, '89-'90 - Matt Clifford's synth-harmonica is the worst noise that's ever come off their stage.

Cringe-worthy in every way.

I don't agree when it's said that there's a worse rendition of anything - just different.

But if I had to pick, I'd say Miss You and SFTD.

IMHO, Miss You was played great during the period of '78-'82. Nice raunchy guitar sound - no organ sound, just the guitar playing the intro.

For SFTD to regain consciousness, I'd say rework it as an acoustic piece. Take it back to its roots and not make it a synthesized electronic jamble of sound with no feeling. It's one of their most profound numbers, and it deserves what it gives back.

Give it to the B-Stage. Whip out some acoustics. When I think of this song, I think of a small club stage, a few musicians playing this folksy tale of satan's influence. For the love of mike, pull out an actual piano, and have Chuck stick to what's in the song. Have Ronnie and Keith doo the woo woo who who's. Keep the involvement minimal. Keep the core of a song for it to survive. Less is more.

An excellent idea. The fact that stuff like this doesn't happen is a big part of this "setlist whiner's" frustration with the current state of the Stones.

People would go out of their minds if the Stones were to surprise them in this fashion--and not merely gratify expectations...

Right, and I did not like the Las Vegas version of Sympathy as well on that tour. But they did Satisfaction surprisingly great given that it has been played to death.

You summed it up well. Same with Midnight Rambler and JJF and its the form (i love the sloppiness and passion of the 70s) , the lenght, Micks singing and the back up that ruins it for me.

You Can't Always Get What You Want 2005-2006

It just drags on and on. Nothing catchy in that songs anymore.

Satisfaction in 1969.

Always, Lets spend some time together...cant capture the Brian Wilsonian glow and vibe of the original, and no other arrangement adds much.
