A Bigger Bang...nearly a year later
Posted by: monkeygripglue ()

so...it's nearly a year...all of the buildup to it's release and all of the continual crap of this tour..

what do you think??..is there another album in them...honestly?..

how does this last one hold up??? especially compared to the last 2??

my personal opinion is that unless they get a new producer....not a kiss-ass like don was...that they will go down in history as officially 'petering out '...johnny cash has been dead for 3 years and has more integrity with his new record..BECAUSE HE TOOK A CHANCE AND CARED AND WAS LOYAL TO HIS ART AND WHAT DROVE HIM..HE DIDNT DUET WITH DAVE MATTHEWS......

unfortunately 'a bigger bang' in retrospect IMO is a rushed collection of songs by a group of guys going on tour thinking about making money other than songs..

fortunately, God gave them enough talent to bang out some good numbers in spite of themselves.."Laugh, I Nearly Died" is really the only song that could fall into the "classic" category from this record..

i know we like to fool ourselves into thinking they still do great stuff but honestly...even though they are capable..they are lazy...they rest on their laurels...they fall out of trees and they charge a lot for tickets because they are so out of touch that they think it's ok...i wish they would do something great...and they could..but they wont..

i just cant understand why a group of 4 guys..who are obviously on a timeclock...will not just be themselves and bang it out...they preach about how it's 'what they do' and 'the sun, the moon and the rolling stones' and all of that crap...

goddammit gentlemen...swing on..with some integrity

I love ABB and I think it holds up well. I love their last four studio albums, yes, including (call me crazy)Steel Wheels. One more original album? Sure, why not. It'll probably come out in 2009.

That´s the point! If they wanna make one last record that will be respected they need to change the producer, like U2 did years ago (Achtung baby) Don Was is another word for boring.

i'll only call you crazy for loving ABB! SW is far superior (as is VL) Actually SW and VL are better than both BTB and ABB . . .

Bollocks. SW and VL are unquestionably the poorer, and ABB stands up far better against the BTB too. So pardon me, but who's crazy now ?

Achtung Baby was produced by the same guys that produced The Joshua Tree and The Unforgettable Fire: Eno/Lanois. But this time Lanois was the most influental one.

I respect everybody's opinion, but I can't see the reason why people want to write down their quotes all the time about:

- ABB is a bad album
- ABB Tour is a crap
- They do it for the money
- comparing other bands to Stones

I've had enough of this "I am a thinking fan" or "I am a fan with opinion" bullshits.

If someone got the chance to see Mick Jagger live in Milan, Vienne or Munich, and thinks that he is doing it for money, well it is very sad.

God, you lot must have been champin' at the bit!!! Back to the moaning again.... what else do you want??? No album at all??? You try touring this long into your 60's and be told your only in it for the money...... same old boring, dull crap!

Still like the ABB album. Strong, straight forward guitar work, stripped down songs, the occasional ballads and some blues influences.

Songs that should be performed live in any case, so they can bring out any of the songs they haven't done already. Offcourse there are some fillers on it and total failures (SOL and SNC), but aren't there on every album?

Nice addition to their immensive body of work and they at least gave up trying to sound 'now', using popular producers. They sound like they're supposed to on ABB.

What I don't like are the lyrics (RJ, SNC, ONNYA, SOL, etc.). Guys with their talent should have come up with better lines.

About 8 tracks on ABB hold up well but the rest are poor in my opinion. They could still come up with damn good album in 2007 but they need some quality control on the songs - ie a strong producer who is prepared to tell them to throw out the below par material.

These albums do have fillers IMO.

LIB has Let It Bleed.
SF has Sister Morphine.
BB has none.
Exile has many songs that wouldn't go outside that particular album. Like Casino Boogie and Hip Shake.
SG has Lies.
TY has Tops and Heaven.

I still listen to it with passion. Their best opus since Tatoo You.

Kent, I suppose you must be jokin' saying that Sister Morphine or Let It Bleed are fillers !!!!!

its all relative. All of those songs you mention would be standouts if they appeared on some other albums

"Tops" aand "Sister Morphine" being described as 'filler' makes me scratch my head a bit, though! Both are pretty close to perfection IMO

Not joking. It's good songs. Don't get me wrong. Tottally good songs. But they're too bleak and boring for these albums. Let It Bleed was played better, and worked better, on Stripped. Same goes for Sister Morphine. Way better, and working better, on NS.

What does it matter? We aren't seeing them anymore for their "new" music. I for one have loved "Voodoo Lounge" and "Bridges." I even like ABB(Except for Streets of Love"). It doesn't matter what they put out. The fact is, they are the greatest Rock And Roll band of all time and we should all support them.

You get the point, Kent. I would add Dear Doctor to the fillers and remove Sister Morphine.

"Tops and Sister Morphine are boring."

NOW I'VE HEARD IT ALL!

Gee folks, get a grip! If we all had the same tastes in music it would be a pretty boring world! My son thinks SOL is one of the best tracks on ABB. That dosn't make him wrong, that makes him human. We all love the Stones or we wouldn't spend time on this site dissecting everything they do or say. I don't love Some Girls...there, I said it!! I think it is one of their weakest efforts. That is just my opinion. My opinion is based on personal taste, not fact... so it can't be wrong.

I think it is a very good album, better than Bridges but not quite as good as Voodoo. In my opinion of course. Actually it's already great just because of LIND, easily the best Stones track in many many years for me.

Nearly a year after it came out I STILL love the 'Bigger Bang' album. To call it 'rushed' is just, excuse the language- bollocks!. They started work (Mick & Keith anyway) in May 2004, then there were further sessions in the December & it was released finally in September 2005. I wouldn't call that 'rushed'.It was like waiting for a baby to be born!
I kept looking for news of a new Stones album for the last few years & had finally decided that there probably would never be one. But, even Charlie (thank God) recovered from a major illness enough to get behind what is the best Stones album since...........oh, who cares. It's a real BAND album. Yes- 'BTB' was great- but read the liner notes & you'll see a whole crowd of session musicians too!. Jagger & Richards even worked on some songs in seperate studios.
We were lucky to see a new Stones album, especially a really GOOD one. And- another tour. Some people just don't appreciate how lucky they (we) are!.

Apart from ABB - everey album they've put out since Steel Wheels has been labeled "the best album since..." either Some Girls or Exile. This said, I think Vodoo Lounge holds up extremely well, espeically when listening to the Vodoo Brew/Vodoo Stew versions. IMO this is because they dared to put some "grow up gracefully" stuff on it. And even the more obvious stuff like "Sparks Will Fly" rings true. I'd say: GET REAL first, then a good album will follow.

ABB is their best record since Undercover. Laugh, I nearly died is their best song since Indercover of the night. I will be very, very satisfied with another album luke ABB. Ok, ok, Streets of love is their worst song since Back to Zero, but I forgive them.... ABB, that record should be played loud!!!!

Of course there will be another album. ABB is a really good album. I think ABB & Voodoo are much better than Bridges & Steel Wheels. The latter two are fairly good anyway MEZ

I think ABB stands up pretty well after a year. I still listen to my selected favourite tracks from it (LIND being the gem of the bunch) while ignoring others I consider fillers. In my opinion (and again, this is JUST my opinion), it ranks about equal with B2B in quality, and somewhat superior to VL, SW and DW. I don't think it's as good an effort as UC, TY or even ER though. But who knows if this personal ranking of mine will remain like this another year from now.....

As for putting forth yet another album in the near future, I certainly hope so! Why not - - it's a privalege to get any new material from a favourite band that's been around for so long. Ever since "Undercover" was rumoured to be their "last album" we, as Stones fans, have truly been spoiled. True, not everything they've released since then is praise-worthy, but I believe that any honest effort, even if it's not very good or all that successful, is better than not trying at all.
