The sound in AmsterdamArena
Posted by: Infamy ()

I`ve heard from several sources that the sound there is supposed to be worse than other stadiums. Is this true? I´d like to hear from some of you who has seen the stones there and other places. Thank you.

Bring your stereo into your bathrom and play it loud. That's the sound quality at the A.dam ArenA.

Why is it so bad? Is it because it has a semi-enclosed roof? I've never been there.

The roof is completely closed for concerts.

Wow, that's like Tokyo Dome, which is terrible (depending on where you are sitting). Why do they do this? Is the weather unpredictable in the summer?

I have seen the Stones about 40 times, five times in a club. I have seen them four times in the Arena: the worst shows I have ever seen by any band. I live about 5 minutes by metro from the Arena, but I won't go to the show. I plainly refuse to pay 100 euro to see the Stones in the Arena.

It is made for football not for mussic. And the designer don't have a clue about acoustics. It is all steel, but if they cared to add some acoustic material it would be much better of course. Or if they opened the roof. But nice clear sky weather is not for every summer day in A.dam unfortunately. They rarely opens the roof unfortunately.

I really don't know why they play in the Amsterdam Arena instead of in Rotterdam "De Kuip" maybe cheaper ? or the name Amsterdam ?

Hmmm... Sounds kind of bad. Saw the Stones in Globen, Stockholm and I think that they have the same problem there. Had a fantastic show, though. Seeing the Stones would be good with no sound at all, in my opinion! I got NO EXPECTATIONS for good sound, so therefore it will be great!

I'm Dutch and refuse to go to the echodome, I go to other countries, last time Arena in '98 was very, very bad, even FOS > terrible.
On the other hand you'll hear the concert several times for only 1 ticket haha

The sound is terrible!!!
When David Bowie played there a couple of years ago he made a joke out of the terrible sound "Well i never played 100 hundred song in one show before. Get it? Get it? Get it? Get it? (he said it in a acho way, very funny)"

Cheers,
Wuudy

The Amsterdam Arena is indeed trying to improve their reputation, by improving the sound quality. This has started a few years ago, so the ABB concert should have better sound than the Licks tour concerts.
I also hoped they would be playing their Dutch gigs in De Kuip, Rotterdam. But it seems that either Mojo, the promotor, has an exclusive contract with the ArenA, or the Kuip decided not to stage any bands anymore. The last year their have been no big events (music) in the Kuip.

I hope the improvements work... I've read no bad or good newspapercomments on the Arena sound at the 4 Robbie Williams gigs last month.

A 70,000 seat domed stadium made mostly of steel? I am an audiophile, so I know a little bit about acoustics, and that's just crazy. Of course the sound will be bad! Charlie must be a genius if he can keep a beat while they are on the B-Stage under such conditions.

Well, I can't read Dutch, but hopefully they have added acoustic material througout the arena, most importantly on the inside lining the roof. I plan to be on the rail for this show, and it would suck if the sound was bad even from there.

Quick translation and summary:

"The ArenA will invest a lot of money in a new sound system to improve the sound during large events, such as pop and rock concerts. Also there will be installed large sound absorbing material. The initiative came from MOJO amongst others. They started in january and all will be finished before the concert season starts in the summer of 2006. Total costs: 1,4 million euros."
