In Rock: Deep Purple.
In truth, they were on a par with Led Zep until Blackmore and Gillan fell out.
I saw Deep Purple in Perth (at Beatty Park POOL!!!) in a show also with FREE, Manfred Mann and Aussie blues band Chain, on May 16, 1971
I saw Led Zeppelin in Perth at Subiaco Oval on February 16, 1972
In truth, Purple were nowhere near the league of Zep. Their overall song standards were just not up to Zep's. Some yes, but not overall.
Playing wise fantastic, but quality of songs? Nope. In fact, FREE blew them into the weeds in '71!!!
I still remember FREE as someone who I had vaguely recalled had that song ALL RIGHT NOW, but nothing else. They hit the stage and that bass/drum rhythm section of Fraser and Kirke just smacked me in the chest. Add Kossoff's incendiary and 'open' guitaring and Rodgers amazing vocals and they were just incredible. Amazing. I went with a bunch of guys from school. We all went to see Deep Purple. We all came home FREE nuts..... the bootleg from that night, as horrible as it sounds compared to most modern bootlegs, remains one of my treasures...
