"Anorak" question re Keith's amps.
Posted by: Spud ()

Anybody have any idea which speakers Keith has in his Tweed Twins ?
[I've never seen a picture that catches them from the right angle ]
or even more obscurely...which variety of 6L6 tubes he uses ?

Love those old valve amps! Great sound and much warmer than transistor amps. They just don't make them like that anymore.

That's an old amp. First I was going to say it was just a speaker cabinet, but isn't it one of those ancient models that has the row of knobs kind of recessed, running along the top. I can't get an idea of relative size but I wonder if those are 10" speakers.

If its still stock, which I imagine it is, they are Jensen speakers...

Thank you very kindly. I can't see the picture from here at work. I'll have a look when I get home ;^)

Jensen P12R, P12Q & P12N were all variously stock with "narrow panel" Twins ...but I'm wondering what's in them now.
I've read Ceaser Diaz quoted as saying that Keith was using Celestions in them at one point...but his recent tone doesn't sound like Celestions to me.

Sorry open-G.

"Anorak" is UK slang for sad folks [like me] with nothing better to do than study the minutae and trivia of their particular interest to the point of obsession.
The "Anorak" bit comes from the traditional attire of train spotters and bird watchers...who very much typify this odd behaviour ;^)

Yes, but that was about the amps on b-stage at the licks tour.
now where did that thread go?

Keith or his technician wouldn't stick a "Fender Twin Amp" sign on a Victoria amp

aw - there it is

I have several pictures of amps of the Stones, including set-ups etc. I will send them to With Sssoul, and hopefully she will put them up.

About speakers and tubes: I have no infrormation at all about that. My guess is (nothing more than a guess), that Pierre will only buy the best of the best, and that is the black base 1950's RCA 6L6 valves, costing about $400 per pair (if you can find them).

nice, TeleK - thanks!
[peering hard at the small print:] at the bottom of the first page you posted
there are two singlecut LP Juniors and one singlecut LP Special -
i know Keith used those two Juniors a lot in 94/95,
but the last (only!) time i think i saw him with a singlecut Special was in 78.
so did Keith use that Special on the VL tour?? or is that Ronnie's?
(sorry to invade an amp thread with a guitar question, but i can't help it!)

with sssoul,
Don't apologise for interupting an amp thread with guitar talk.
As Keith says..."it's the combination of the guitar and amp that's where the magic is".
You can't seperate one from the other...or have an obsession with one without the other ;^)

Thought I'd add info about some of the amps Keith(and the others) used during late 1966 - early 69. My favourite era of the band! tongue sticking out smiley

PART ONE: Between the Buttons

During the early moths of 1967 The Rolling Stones as well as The Beatles and The Hollies, were given a whole new backline of the latest all solid state Vox amplifiers.

For a few years Vox had been experimenting with the use of solid state technology which allowed for the use of a variety of on board effects in the amps such as tremolo, fuzz/distortion, top boost and the new 3-position MRB(mid range boost) which had a set range of tones similar to their ground breaking wah wah pedal.

They had previously issued The Beatles, The Hollies and The Troggs with Vox's UL- 7 Series amplifiers which were a combination of both valve and solid state technology.

I am unaware of when Vox issued these amps to the stones, or if the band actually bought them, but the band can be seen using them during their UK tour in Autumn 1966 and during the Olympic Studio sessions for Between the Buttons.

It looks like Keith used the UL-760 live and in the studio, but there is the possibility that he would have used the smaller UL-730 for studio work during the Between the Buttons sessions, but this is just speculation on my part.

UL-7120

UL-730

These amps appear to have been retired following some tv appearances in January - February 1967 and the introduction of the latest all solid state amps courtesy of Vox.

PART TWO: Their European Satanic Majesties

As previously mentioned, The Rolling Stones were given a new backline by Vox in early 1967(source Beat Instrumental). The first appearance of these amps was during their 1967 European tour. Keith and Brain used one 100 watt Vox Supreme each and Bill used the 100 watt Super Foundation bass amp.

'warsaw april 13th 1967 by Stanislaw Dabrowiecki, courtesy of sssoul'
Note Bill's bass amp is on the ground in both pics.

note Brian is also using a Fender Dual Showman(it appears for the Rickenbacker 12 string)

Following the European tour the band used these amps for the recording sessions for the We Love You single and Their Satanic Majesties Request album.

I don't at this time have any photo's of the band in the studio with these amps, but you can see Keith sitting on and playing through a 30 watt Vox Conqueror in the We Love You film.
