Ok, here's a gem. This guy is so great. I'm a big fan. Dutch guy called Julian Sas. I saw him live 4 times, and he's better every time. He's so great. In my opinion the best european blues band at this moment.

This is County Jail Blues, live, check it out on Rapidshare:

I Heard It Through The Grape Vine - Smokey Robinson & The Miracles - 1966

Penned by Norman Whitfield and Barret Strong
the song was given to Smokey to cut as a demo
or guide track for other artists to follow.

Glady's Knight recorded and released her take of it in
1967 then Marvin Gaye followed with his version in 1968...

But track down Smokey's it's a killer......

In the US, Bo Donaldson and the Heywoods (Heywards?) had the hit with "Billy, Don't Be A Hero". Paper Lace had a hit with "The Night Chicago Died". Sorry, my good friend BBro, neither of these is anywhere near a gem in my book.

A great forgotten gem is "I'm On Fire" by the Dwight Twilly Band.

Manchester soul octet Sweet Sensations' 1974 hit "Sad Sweet Dreamer." I dunno - it's just one of those things you put down to experience.....

How do we define a "gem," please? I want to play, but someone needs to explain the rules, please. I don't want to get horse slapped like my Baboon friend.

WHAT DID YOU THINK OF MY GEM? 'Cause nobody replied and I've got the feeling you think it's kind of just an ordinary rock, if you know what I mean!!

Easy, Reptile, no need to raise your voice. To answer your question, I haven't linked to him yet, but I'm sure he possesses all the gem like qualities.

I can't do it, Reptile, I'm on my employer's computer and he has rules about such things.

Okay, here's my gem, "Dock Of A Bay," by Otis...it reminds me of summer.

Also, for nostalgic reasons, I like "Son Of A Preacher Man," by Dusty Springfield.

Lukester - you ever hear that Otis CD where there are a coupla of outtakes of Dock of the Bay? Very interesting....easily on a par with the final take.

Dock of the Bay was on the radio, at 6 o'clock in the morning. They usually play lotsa rubbish.

No, I didn't Tod...is it a bootleg or properly published CD? Thanks for mentiomning it.

A couple of months ago I heard an interview on public radio with Steve Cropper about the making of that song, and about Stax Records in general, and I would love to hear the outtakes. Steve said Otis did that whistling in one take. hmmm.
