no criticizing Wyman/Wynman until you can spell his name correctly

Someone posted a link to an '81 show, with Beast of Burden.

Bill utterly replaceable?

No, he makes ALL the difference.

And the '72 shows. And the '78 shows and the '73 shows and.........

And WTF has funk got to to with the Stones?

And they are not a 'hard rock' group anyway.

Etc
Etc.
Etc.

Yeah. I found Beast Of Burden flat out boring since Bill left.

The thread title does not make any sense to me.A bass player does not have to ROCK when playing LIVE. A great bass player is one that is in the background that keeps the groove in place .

THE THING WE ALL MUST KNOW BY NOW IS THAT BILL & THE STONES USE THE MEDIA TO SELL THINGS AND BILL IS OUT THERE TO PROMOTE HIMSELF NO ONE WANTS TO HERE HIM SAY THE STONES ARE REAL GOOD GUYS OR BETTER WITHOUT HIM NOT NEWS.SO ITS A LOAD OF OLD RUBBISH.About the music comment I think most people are right The Stones do Rock more without Bill . But they were not just a Rock band with Bill they had something a bit more Keith called it Roll, And I think thats the point we all seem to be making YES A GRATE ROCK BAND THE BEST. But without bill a lot of the feel seems to have gone.

No one is criticising WYMAN, (at least I'm not) - it's the other guy, 'WYNMAN' this thread is all about, terrible musician, ruins everything - needs shooting in fact.

Bill had SUCH a great groove, and I am NOT knocking Darryl...Bill provided that special imperceptible something to the engine room. His contribution was GREAT!

I cant believe someone had the nerve to knock Bill Wyman...he was great with the Stones, and STILL is with the Rythm Kings...

in fact, 'ol Wynman's bass parts were replaced by Wyman's

Thanks, turd, I was about to put something similar up there.

It's pretty ridiculous to compare Live Licks to the 1969 tour. It's much more fair to compare Darryl Jones era live material to '89/'90 live material & I have to say that, with a few exceptions, there has been an improvement since then.

The Stones are not a "hard rock" band but, they do have a good number of hard rock songs .... more than most other people had up until at least the '80's (excluding punk bands). All of the Stones' songs don't fit into one category.

I have a complex opinion. smiling smiley

Some songs sound better with Darryl, some are better with Bill.

The interesting point is that the "most important greatest hits" songs - for example, BrownSugar, JJF, Start Me Up, Sympathy are far better with Darryl. The live Wyman versions of these songs from 1989-90 are relatively boring. Darryl's bass is full of sparks and energy. He plays with humbly, however, in some tracks his play is too thick. He plays too many notes for some of the songs.
The lowest point is the Four Flicks version of @#$%&.
Overplayed with no air, no pause, just scaling from start to end.

But over all, Darryl is the better one for more songs, I mean. There are less "exception" songs (which were better with Wyman).

I don't get the point of being angry over what Bill is saying.
First of all, the newspapers turn and twist it the way they want.
Second, he's not a part of Rolling Stones anymore, he sits at home while the other 4 are making billions, meet beautiful girls, and grateful fans.
It's not so strange that he talks a bit negative about the band, from behind his tea-table. He even got brushed out from the Rarities cover.
And he played excellent bass all the way. Not only in their golden 70s, but from the very beginning.....listen to Little Red Rooster or just about any song from their first years.

You know, I probably misspoke when I said he is "worthless" (but replaceable is probably what the rest of the band also thought). And it is true he is a great bass player. It could be that my words were colored by the fact that I have always thought he was a bit of a creep. Must have something to do with the whole thing about having a relationship with (and eventually marrying) a 13 year old. He probably took the lyrics on Stray Cat Blues a bit too literally...

That's cool, Raoul. I like your clarification.

But you mentioned "creepy?" I'll give you creepy; I once heard that Wynman, not Wyman, once got a woman pregnant, just so he could have sex with her baby.

Wyman = Great bass player

Wynman = Total chump and loser.

incredible discussion.

dear uz2bstoned,

maybe you think Darryl is BETTER than Bill. from a technical point of view, you're right. BUT THERE IS A PROBLEM. A BIG PROBLEM.

Listen :

you can change Mick for a better singer : Al Jarreau
Charlie for a better drummer : Aynsley Dunbar
Ronnie for a better guitarist : Steve Vai
Keith for a better guitarist : John Mc Laughlin
We already have a better bass player than Bill : Daryl

look : we have a band that is for shure better than the stones. and that band would suck a lot.

So please, be careful with what you write or say. Bill & Charlie were just fantastic when they were playing TOGETHER.

The Stones have never really "rocked" hard. They groove. Yeah, there have been many tough riffs, but Charlie and Bill always put that slinky edge to the music. Bill was the best and the last really good Stones album was UC. They lost a lot when they lost Bill. Darryl's good, but he will never match what Bill did with Charlie. If anything it was all the years of playing together that made them such a great rhythm section. They were somewhat telepathic.

It's never been a contest. Dryl has his moments but the Stones'overall sound and swing was better with Wyman. Listen to Whip Comes Down or Just My Imagination from the Hampton 81 broadcast boots. I rest my case. Thankyou.

Can you imagine if Jones was the original player and Wyman took his spot in 1994. All people would say is get Jones back this new guy can't play or swing like Jones did.

No, because they wouldn't have made it this far. People underestimate the influence of bass players; Wyman is just as imporant as Charlie. They were the ultimate rhythm section in rock 'n' roll history. Now.. we have the great beat.. but no swinging basslines to go with it..

The point is that those types of examples are few & far between.Go listen to a weak 1990 Before They Make Me Run & then listen to one from the Darryl Jones era.

Beware JKF, the middle part of your screen name sounds dangerously similar to a certain female organ.
