Just to change topic for a while....I hear Bill Wynman lashing out again last few days....well i gotta to say the band is far better without him. Forget any issue except the music and listen. They are a different band for sure and a better one IMHO. Listen to Tokyo 90 JJF version. Then 4 years later in Tokyo again. Chalk and cheese. While the steel wheels version repeats the same refrain bar after bar, you could almost loop it and the last 2 minutes would sound the same! The VL version has creativity and no two bars are the same. Mr Jones is a funky player and has really added to the band.
My points being
1) Steel Wheels = Solid RNR without creativity
2) VL onwards = neverending funk and imagination on songs they have played bazillions of times

It's redicoulus because Wyman swinged as hell. We can't start a discussion over for instance "omelett is best without eggs" either. It's wrong to begin with.

i think that both wyman and darryl have different styles, and i think that darryls pretty low in the bass anyways, so i dont see why anybody cares. but to be honest, wyman supposedly left due to old age, and thats fine, but he shouldnt keep slagging his old friends in the nesw now and then.

He's not bitter. You obviously haven't read all the flattering things he said about the boys. Those parts of the interviews obviously are worthless to the Sun. He still does blues jams with them regularly.

haha, right Beelyboy, I like that cynical touch on comments

Whoa, Hunter, you're joking, right? ...please say you're joking.

Oh I agree - that Wynman, he was terrible, in fact everything the Stones ever did, albums, singles live performances were ruined because that Wynman couldn't 'rock'. It's amazing the band never noticed this......
Bill Wyman is a swinging rock 'n roll player... With him the groove was fantastic... Technically it's because he plays a note a fraction before the actually note should be played, before a drumkick from Charlie. A note can be played very precisely which would sound static, but if you play it a fraction earlier.. well, the results we can hear! That's where the swing or roll comes from.. and that's unique... Not many bassplayers have that kind of style/technique whatever.
Darryl is technically a great bass player. Too bad he is low in the mix. And yes, the sound is different with him. I think The Stones should use his skills more, like they do live during some songs where he get's a little solo.
With Wyman you could concentrate easily on his parts, it's almost heaven to hear him playing with The Stones. With him it was like every Stone had a part in a song, every instrument was important. Nowadays they sound more like Mick, Ron, Keith and Charlie together in one take, and the bass parts are only functional, not creative or an important part of the songs.
Yes, I miss Bill a lot, the swing, the fantastic bass lines.
Yes - don't underestimate the value of what Bill brought to the Stones during his stay... I for one would like to see him return for a 70's night at the Royal Albert Hall, doing music from Sticky Fingers, Exile on Main Street, Goats Head Soup & IORR....
And there is another Ex - member who should get an invite to that night.....
Before you start low-rating Bitter Bill, listen to the bass in "Miss You", "Start Me Up", or "Honky Tonk Women". Maybe "Just My Imagination" live. Just right, groovin' bass.
I forgot about the bass on Miss You...thanks Elmo, it really is out front.
I always loved the bass on "2000 Light Years From Home," but I'm guessing, since I am not a musician, that it's not a real complicated bass line running throughout the song....complicated or not, I love it.
