what do you think about fender's '50 esquire (mexico) for getting "keith's sound" ?

Not sure about Keith's sound, but you can definitely get a nice Steve Cropper sound out of an Esquire.

You'd only have the one pickup as well so that would limit you a bit.

Thats where the luthier comes in and does the humbucker job.

Actually it's "Squire" not "Esquire". I have the Stratocaster model. 3 pick-ups. Great guitar. The only down-side I've noticed is that it won't hold it's tuning very long. Maybe cheap tuning nuts? I don't know. What I DO know is that the Guitar has little to do with the "sound" that comes out of it. What makes the "sound" distinctive is the Amp and the Effects and settings you use on them.

Wow, you're absolutely wrong on that one.
Easiest way to find that out - go to a well equiped music store, choose your fav. amp (no fx) and test a whole bunch of Telecasters (or Strats) Mexico made, USA Standards, NOS, Reissues, Taiwan and Squires - then tell me what you think.
I'm sure you won't repeat your sentence.

oh yea, someone else wanna elaborate on Squier & Esquire?

Oh I agree that if everything else is constant that you CAN hear the difference, be it ever so slight, between guitars. I won't argue that. But just because you have a Fender strat it's not gonna sound like Hendrix until you use the proper Effects! If I have the right Effects I can make any shit guitar sound like Hendrix. The same goes for trying to replicate the sound of any of your fave guitarists. They all have their favorite effects, volume, tremelo settings etc. that give them their signature sound. Todays computerized Amps & other technology makes it easier than ever to achieve this.

Well I haven't seen one of my 5 guitar faves use a Squier and Line6 amp yet.

If you can't play the guitar it doesn't matter if you use a cheapo squier or a $ 20,000 original '52 plus a '57 or '58 Twin

You're getting some things really mixed up^^

1949 - The first prototype of the Fender Esquire, Broadcaster and Telecaster is completed.
1982 - Fender launches Squier, the company's first line of imported guitars.

No, Esquire is the model name for a one pickup (and to confuse things: sometimes two pickup) Telecaster model. The Squire is the Japenese and later Chinese brand of cheap Fenders.

Second, in my book the most important ingredients for the sound you will make is 1. the guitar player, 2. the amp, 3. the guitar, 4. the PA System or recording device and 5. the effects you use.

Most of Jeff Beck's Yardbirds' work was done on an Esquire,
as was some of McCartney's playing on the Sgt. Pepper, Abbey Road,
and McCartney albums.

And about all of Bruce Springsteens own guitar work was done on an Esquire.

I agree with Mathis, the first and foremost thing that affects the sound is the player.

I ain't stupid, I'm just guitarded.

<Squires: Crap. Won't touch one>

The Squires made in the early 80s are very good. More recent Squires are crap. Esquire is a quality guitar, not to be confused with Squires (half the price).

my friend recently bought new fender esquire, and will soon put the neck pick-up, so it will become telecaster. for me it has a great tone.

and, the most important thing, in its specifications it is very similar to '52 telecaster!

I have a Squire standard strat.
It sounds pretty crap, but I'm fairly sure the main reason is the PLAYER !

I bought an esquire before playing it and was really dissapointed with the sounds i got from it so... I shoved a pair of PAF humbuckers in the guitar and got gibson style sounds from a fender. Cost came to around 650 quid altogeather so much cheaper and more special than a les paul.
