Except for the apparent lip synching throughout the whole show its pretty cool. I think they just tried to mish and mosh the Japan and London show together and it looks like Mick Jagger is not singing live its kinda goofy. For example, in sympathy the audio is real goofy..
I have been watching alot of it the last 2 weeks. If you have good surround with a very loud base and turn the volume all the way up the begining is very cool with the flames and all. Jagger works his ass off like none other at the last few songs truly amazing at times. I would definetly get the DVD.

That sounds kind of weird if he looks like he's lipsinking! I'll rent it first. they have it at my video store.

It was filmed especially for IMAX theaters, which in addition to the live music required several "staged" or "posed" sessions. The idea was to make it appear like you were on stage with the Stones. There was a documentary about the making of the film which was interesting. The film looks like it is about two inches wide, and takes an eighteen inch reel for twelve minutes or something like that.

It's great if you like the 89/90 tour. Best recommendation from this tour would be Atlantic City 1989 though.

There are some really loud and too easily recognized guitar over-dubbings (and filmings). Despite that, Keith's work in "Sympathy" is really a gas. His most "Hendrix moment" ever? smiling smiley

And more generally: despite (or because of) that cut and paste-fuzz, it is a good document of that tour and times. Some of Jagger's 80's forced movements and clothes are a bit dated, though smiling smiley But it is not his fault: always receptive and sensitive Mick is a dedicated follower of fashion, so its the fashion of the times that must be blamed...

Go ahead and buy it!

yeah, 89 is one of the least familiar tours for me as far as video footage goes. I want to check it out just out of curiosity. In another thread about "best moments on DVD" someone talked about a '90 version of gimme shelter where mick does a lot of "scat". is that from live at the Max?

None of the footage is from Japan, however they did stich half a dozen European shows together to make it. Got the DVD but never saw it at an IMAX cinema which is probably the best place to see it.

Nice "Ruby Tuesday". Wish they would have shown the band playing "2000 Light Years" instead of the light show. It was cool in concert, not so much on the video.

No. Gimme Shelter is not on it.

Great at the IMAX. Ronnie and Keith both on fire. There's no JJF on it, which makes it seem as if Satisfaction was the final encore, which was mostly not the case on that tour. Best Sympathy of the 'new age'.

The IMAX film material is 10 times bigger than 35mm film - thats what makes the difference. watching the DVD or VHS is no substitute.
Have a look at the Berlin IMAX cinema (for instance) even tho' its in german, you can virtually walk around the place

The IMAX is fun to watch.

The recent 2-26-90 Tokyo upgrade is very nice as well!

Do you know where I can get this?

Obviously 95% of it was played in the studio.

But I watched it on a projector I happened to get hold of for a couple of days and it looks really cool like that.

Been listening to the IMAX audio of "IORR" and "Honky Tonk" lately.

For all the knocks the '89-'90 stuff takes, I think these are two unbelievable performances...can't think of better versions of either song--certainly not official ones.

"At the Max" was a mind blowing experience in an IMAX cinema (I went to Paris to see it in 1992, thats how friggin daft I am..)

Due to the way its filmed and staged it doesnt 'translate' that well to home video/DVD. Whilst its watchable, there's zero comparison. If you want a good document of the 1989-90 tour, get Tokyo 26.2.90 instead.

There's copies going around made from the Japanese laserdisc
version, which is a quite an excellent, if not commercial release.
It's very well made and sounds great on my surround sound system.

Limbostone: For the last 20 shows of the Steel Wheels / Urban Jungle tour [starting June 3, 1990 in Munich] the Stones switched the last two songs around and did Satisfaction as the encore.
