Why only 18 songs in China
Posted by: Rickster ()

I am not one to bitch about the set lists at all and I still love the band and would see them anytime and be happy with whatever they played but only 18 songs in China. I mean I know they could not play some of there usualls but you would think they could have been replaced with others instead of cutting the set list to 18 after all ticket prices were not cheaper. But I still love the band just hope this does not become normal they need to do at least 20 per concert.

They did 19 for most of the European Licks dates.

19 out of a possible 400 !

I'd like to think it was a one-off and it probably will be

very disrespectful to treat that audience in that way. To not even bother to replace the 'banned' songs is outrageous, especially when Jagger had the nerve to mention at the press conference about having 400 others to choose from!

I dont get any pleasure in saying it, but it only adds a lot of fuel to the arguments about the Stones having a lack of respect for their paying audience, and their tendency to take the money and run.

100% correct.

I have to agree with Gazza, this (mentioning the catalog of 400 songs and then just play 18) was very arrogant!

It's a pitty that they don't mind more for their audience, especially if its a first time ever audience!

I bet in Europe the set wont change a lot, maybe they will include biggest mistake and under my thumb, but thats gonna be it, and just 19 songs.

sad, sad, sad...

I doubt if they could consistently get away with 19 songs in Europe - we over here won't tolerate it.

I acutally am from over there too, beast...just live here in southamerica

But they make me doubt very much if I still want to go to the Barcelona and Zurich shows...

Oops - I always was bad at figures! China shouldn't have had any less than the earlier legs and neither should we.

In the set list they say "Chui Jian" is doing a duet on WH, it must be "Cui Jian"

Look at it this way: going and regretting it is still better than not going and regretting it (on which basis, we hope to see you in Barcelona...)

I know, whilst I constantly attempt to defend the Stones to friends my age who critcize them for being sell-outs, the band isn't giving me any help when they pull stunts like these!

The disturbing thing to me is that the set-lists have actually DETERIORATED since the tour began.

Take a look at San Diego:

Start Me Up
You Got Me Rocking
She's So Cold
Tumbling Dice
Oh No Not You Again
It Won't Take Long
As Tears Go By
Midnight Rambler
Rocks Off
Night Time Is The Right Time
--- Introductions
Slipping Away (Keith)
Infamy (Keith)
Miss You (to B-stage)
Rough Justice (B-stage)
Get Off Of My Cloud (B-stage stage)
Honky Tonk Women (to main stage)
Sympathy For The Devil
Brown Sugar
Jumping Jack Flash
You Can't Always Get What You Want (encore)
Satisfaction (encore)

Show start : 9:00 pm
Show end : 11:10 pm

That's 21 songs including Rambler: a show slightly over two hours long. (And they got It Won't Take Long , As Tears Go By, and Rocks Off!)

It seems that we'll only get these kind of sets "when I'm dreaming," only 21 songs, "while I'm sleeping . . ."

Why didn't they play "Moonlight Mile" ?

Mick had a very dry voice. I was afraid he was ablout to loose it. It had the same feel I have heard in Nuremberg 1998, Oakland 1999, Philly 1997, several other times when he actually lost it completely during or after the show. So to be honest I think 18 songs might be in defense of Mick's voice. Well we could have had 20 and they might have had to cancel the Sydney show because his voice was gone for 5 days but 18 songs was ok.

it was a theatre show, sure it was intense, regardless of 18 songs.back in 78 they played only 95 minutes and blew me away, jfk.back in 75,they used to play 2 shows about 85 minutes each.they should of played a not played yet song to make up for no htw,or bs,but what can you do.i saw them play less then 2 hours in ft lauderdale and they were great.

backstreet, now that the group is older, there appears to be a set of people that want 2.5 hours shows with 25 songs that are different every night, as well as bringing in new and untried material. U see, if you , or I , or anyone mentions that the past was even more rstricted with shorter set lists, we will be told how bold it was to it is with so much new material. Which is of course a bit of revsionsist crap, becuase in 75 I can remember people complaining they did not hear enough old stuff, and in 78, heralded for its presentation of so much of Some Girls in each show, like it or not, a lot of people were more impressed by the event then the show and the performance itself!

Am I happy I spent the money I did for onloy 18 songs...I guess not. Did I notice it while I was there, definitely not! I kept notes to give a review ( its coming paulywauly), but really did not notice the short set so much until I read people complaining here. Am I glad I was there, I most certainly am and would do it again in a heart beat. But to be 100% honest, the whole Shangahi experinece has been unreal for me, from meeting Ronnie, through getting hugged by and chatting with Barnard, to finally buying Blondee a drink after the show and smoking a ciggie with him at the bar. Also, in a nod to what BV has said, I think the show was also cut shorter by one song than planned. A fan next to me , as well as my sister, with better eyes, noted 17 songs before the break with two encore numbers, and both of these people were a bit surprised to have the break come an song earlier than expected. I can't tell you if that is accaurate, no way my eyes are that good.

They've finally found someone to duet with worse than Dave Matthews, Sherryl Crowe, & Timberlake.
Talk about adding salt to the wounds of a weak set-list. This ranks at the bottom, I don't even want a boot of this show.
18 songs?!! Insulting!

kahoosier, i completly agree with you. I could not notice the number or songs until i read the set lits on line. Shanghai has been so unique, so special, that even the number of songs has been different. The point was here: to be part of history, and to be so close with the band in this exotic situation. What an hotel to live, when you can meet a member of the band any place you go...what a venue in this small area, with no time to take a look at the screen.

well, sparks will fly!

I can't believe they pussed out and cut 5 songs out ! Jesus Christ, it's only f-ing r&r, but come on! How wussy! I do not agree with the songs being cut and they should have said f off! The people would have rioted in the streets!

Could be that they plan on playing there again in the future,
so maybe they didn't wanna rock the Junk too much quite yet.

I'd have to agree, it does add fuel indeed. And similarly, I don't get pleasure in admitting it to myself

Honkey Tonk Women and Brown Sugar were mentioned in this thread, but does anyone else know which songs were actually 'banned'?
