the KR backup vox on HamptonI (the PPV and the SL version) are great - I really wished they hadn't overdubbed 'em, just fer comedic relief...KR screwed it up and then winked at Mick as if to say, "no worries, mate, we'll fix in the studio!"

There's only one competer in 81/82, and that's Let Me Go.
But you can't blame Keith for not reaching the high notes. It's pretty hard, at least after a bucketful of whiskey.

I love the 81 live version found on so many soundboards from the 81/82 era. Great song. Bring it back! Maybe they can do it in China....ha.

Maybe time really isn't on their side. Who knows? The notes are pretty damn high to hit, maybe Mick isn't up to it anymore..

Yeah, that's one thing I love about this site (and you people on it).
There's so many concerts I go listening to, after a thread. I just listened through the Norway concert from 1981 with Dylan, because of yesterday.
A poor boy need a kick to change Exile, Blonde and Heroes to Jack Daniels on Tour, In The Summertime and Come To Daddy.

Here's 3, StonesTod :
*Fast Talking, Place Pigalle or any other that contains "Waiting FOR My Friend"
* Melbourne All You Can Eat (the first disc, especially "Gimme Shelter" is a killer)
* The Complete Woodstock Tapes 1978 (skip the "performed on 78 tour"-songs, and put on):
- Beautiful Delilah
- Memory Motel
- High Heel Sneakers
- Prodigal Son
- Tell Me
(etc.)

How was that?

BTW, me myself am doing Highwire this moment. It's so forgotten, but I really like it. It's a bit like Don't Stop, it's an "easy" tune, yet it remainds me (or you) of that sweet bird of youth and hot summer nights with ice-cream stands, and girls in bikini.

Isn't Keith on Highwire?? In the mix, you mean, or what...?
It can't be Ronnie playing those HTW-like-licks...!

The best live version of TIOMS by far was the Ed Sullivan performance in 1964. That performance turned the Stones into a household name here in the States literally overnight!

Stanley Booth quotes Lightnin' Hopkins as saying:
"The blues is a lot like church. When a preacher's up there preaching the Bible,
he's honest-to-God trying to get you to understand these things.
Well, singing the blues is the same thing."

you can put "the 81 renditions of Time Is On My Side" in there in place of "the blues":
the way that great roaring full-grown extra-strength whoa-nelly rock & roller up there
really honest-to-God wants to get us to hear how rich and beautiful this piece of music is -
that takes my breath away, that does.

"What do you want - what?!"
- Keith

i love it; they play it on the radio in the states sometimes still...

great pix of mick with the hat during that tour TY!

the original studio cut and release...
i remember they lip-synched that one on Clay Cole; every little and big tv show they could get on, in any market, as they were emerging in the states...
fans were hysterical all stonemania freaky crying and screaming for that one
bigtime. a huge, almost career-making single for them.

think it's fair to say that it was a pretty important release for them; and i think in many ways, opened up millions to the stones in the states...it was sultry and slinky; great organ...and even their lip synched performances showed that sense of menace and release they would become famous for...

blues git break; all head shaking falsettos at the end "time time time...is on my side" that "yes it is" that's one of the singles that broke them bigtime here; visually and on the radio...
maybe as much as any of their other songs at that time; maybe more.

Love the song! Would love to hear it live.

Did you all know that it is not a Jagger/Richards-penned tune?

From the net:
"This was originally recorded by Soul singer Irma Thomas. Her version was the B-side of "Anyone Who Knows What Love Is (Will Understand)" (thanks, Brad Wind - Miami, FL)

The lyrics were most likely written by Jimmy Norman, who was a member of The Coasters. The songwriting credit is unclear, and usually lists Jerry Ragovoy, who wrote "Piece Of My Heart" and "Try" for Janis Joplin, as the only writer, sometimes as "Norman Meade," which he claims he used as a pseudonym. Thomas' original single lists the credit as "J. Norman - N. Meade." (thanks, Dave - Greenville, SC)"

I was getting ready for work this AM and on tv they had two commerical right in a row.

The first was some diet thing, which a cover of Time is On My Side
The second product I don't remember, but they had Good Times (pretty sure it was Sam Cooke and not a cover).

I thought it was cool to have them back to back like that.

It's actually kind of weird, but a lot of non-Stones fans love this tune... A lot of my friends (both male and female) instantly recognise this song. The same way they recognise Satisfaction, Paint It Black, Miss You, Start Me Up, etc. In a very, very strange way it's one of most famous 'Stones songs' among a lot of young people.

Personally, like Baboon, this one might be in my all time Stones top 10 list. Everything about this song is classic Stones. GREAT song!

and for exact reason, Time deserves a spot on Warhorse Row.

This time I agree with Nikkibong.
I find it good song, and it was fun they did a few times as time is on their site, but we al know that by now.

I think their are a lot of other songs they can play from 60ties.
