OT: The most irreplaceable musicians

What musicians touring today do you consider absolutely irreplaceable in their bands ?

I would have definitely said Mick Jagger was an irreplaceable talent in the Stones through probably the late 70's. Today there's probably a fair number of in-shape singers who could do a reasonable job of filling in for him.

I thought Jerry Garcia was irreplaceable in the Dead, but Jimmy Herring has done a great job on lead... maybe it's not JG, but it's a very reasonable replacement.

John Tristao has done a great John Fogerty imitation for almost 10 years now... it's not Fogerty but he really makes for a great concert...

Is Keith irreplaceable ? During the Forty Licks Tour I would have honestly said yes. Even today he has such interpretation-sense of so many songs, but there are probably guitarists out there who could deliver an enjoyable rendition if necessary...

Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray, those guys were both beyond replaceable, but they're no longer touring smiling smiley

As I look across the landscape, there's really only one musician that I think is so beyond peer that replacing him to any satisfactory level would likely be impossible, and his grooves are such an intricate part of the bands sound: the gold standard of funk-rock bassists: Flea.

On 2nd thought... you can throw Bruce Springsteen in there too... the most irreplaceable "front man" in rock'nroll right now... forgetting that the band tours under his name, if they just toured as the E-Street Band, there's nobody going right now with his combination of persona, guitar work, singing, and overall energy. The guy is an un-copy-able original.

How about Brian Jones. The Stones haven't sounded as alive since that guy died.

Nobody is irreplaceable.

Because everyone is unique.

I think that's his point... sort of a Yogi Berra look at the subject.

It would be pretty hard to have a Dylan show without Dylan or a Bowie show without Bowie. But I guess that goes without saying, that a solo artist is not replaceable. As far as people in bands who aren't replaceable? Jagger and Richards in the Stones, Pete and Roger in The Who, Ric Ocasek in the Cars, John Fogerty in CCR (in my humble opinion, of course).

And..... while you're doubling over in stiches, I presume that means that you think Flea is easily replaceable, and not a very good bass player, correct ?

If playing quality doesn't count, Chuck comes close though.

Keef Richards on rhthm guitar in the Stones. Charlie Watts.
That singin' Jagger dude.

...There are many; A couple of suggestions
(besides the obvious Lynott) -
Scott Gorham & Brian "Robbo" Robertson
in Thin Lizzy. Plus Brian Downey.
And Eric Bell.

Come on, anybody really thinks that Mick could be replaceable?????????

Same goes for Keith, Townshend, Page, Mercury, Angus Young... Their bands are/would be fake without them...

Jagger would have been IMPOSSIBLE to even remotely imitate in the 60's and 70's, more for his dancing than singing.

Today you could find some "front man for rent" who could do a decent enough job for the rest of the stones to tour behind as "the rolling Stones review" or something...

You can't find a bassist anywhere to play as Flea does. That's the difference.

Don't know about Flea, but for sure the vast majority of people in this world who have heard about the Rolling Stones (not hardcore fans but the "normal" people) identifies the band with Mick. Even the band got to be announced as Mick Jagger and The Rolling Stones!

Flea is inimitable, and certainly integrated into the sound that his band creates to the point that they would be WAY different without him, but I could see the Chili Peppers continuing without Flea before I could see The Stones continuing without Mick Jagger or Keith Richards. Even Charlie for that matter.

I just don't get this fixation with replacing band members.

I always thought that after Dickie Betts was ousted out of The Allman Brothers the band was done. Boy was I wrong.

I think Elvis is only irreplaceable musician ever. No one would ever try to fill his blue suede shoes.
Oh, sorry. I have just been informed that there are thousands that have full time jobs being Elvis.
I guess everybody is replaceable after all.
