Shawn, that's a bit over simplistic. I love the Rolling Stones and rock and roll but I didn't think it was one of their better performances. Mick was great but the guitars at times sounded like a cacaphony.
it's not for me to approve or disapprove. I happen to think it was just standard fare for the boys in '06. Having said that, it's always "fightin' words" when someone proclaims "if you don't (fill in the blank), the you don't like the Stones."
About 30 years ago I was reading a book that was sort of an encyclopedia of rock 'n' roll. It had a three page entry for the Stones. The last few lines went something like this....
"When the sound of the drums and crashing guitars come together on Brown Sugar, something magical happens. To say you don't care for that sound, is more than just a simple opinion. It says you don't like rock 'n' roll."
know what? when I originally posted, I was going off of the impressions I had yesterday of this performance. Now that I am listening to the mp3 of the superbowl set, Rough Justice doesn't sound bad at all.... it's one of the better performances of the 3. I guess the audio on my tv sucks. I couldn't even hear the backup singers last night.
so count me as one who enjoyed the entire mini-set. the censorship is a bit much, but what else can be expected here in the U.S. in 2006?
Have to agree with Open G, but in my opinion, Ronnie sounded better than Keith.. but I still don't like to tone he get's from his slide playing, "too tinny" he needs to try a "Gibson" Les Paul or....

I thought their Superbowl performance started a litted choppy, but they recovered well. I was a little disappointed in Start Me Up. I thought the mix was off a little and so were they. But I can understand why. It seems like they shortened up the song so they could get everything in within 12 minutes. Ronnie's guitar solos during SMU were cut. They have played this song so many times together, to then change it, and do it differently for the first time in front of 20 million people must not be easy. I do like when this song is raw though.
Rough Justice and Satisfaction both rocked. They finished strong with those two. Personally though, Satisfaction didn't have to go that long at the expense of Start Me Up. I would have rather seen Satisfaction not drag on as much at the end, and instead have Ronnie's solos in Start Me Up. It kind of makes the song. All and all, a good performance.

I'm surprised nobody mentioned that the idea of the stage desine, with the people in the middle, is from the U2 stage. I never thought about this idea but it is so obvious to have such a stage. The idea is just perfect for the tongue logo. Very, very cool!!!

Guitars were loud on my TV. I thought they were great. If only they would tour like this w/o their 10 piece back up players. Way better w/ this stripped down core band.
Mick seemed to not be finsihed talking when keith started Satisfaction, i wonder if he had another joke inhim; and
all of us keep saying we want more new stuff, so it was funny to hear some complaints this morning (on ESPN radio, specifically Mikes Greeneberg and Golic) about how do yoyu play a new song at the Super Bowl? You have to play one of your classics."
Personally I thought they did a good job, loved the stage and they have nothing to be ashamed about (thnak god they didnt censor themsleves, they left it up to the TV guys).

Well Chuck was there and Backing vocals could be heard clearly, but not seen
BtW: There is 15 minutes of "sports" on my 4 hour tape, the rest is big men standing around, looking angry and making plans. Not my cup of tea, definitely.
just listening to Satisfaction from the super bowl.......GREAT duel guitar work and a great in your face guitar mix.........for me, this warhorse was the highlight of the night
I am grateful that I am only burdened by my lifelong love for the Stones. I couldn't have been happier with their performance. They played it safe, and smart, with the setlist and nailed it.
For those of you challenged by the quality of the sound, and mix, on a LIVE performance, in a gargantuan venue, hastily set up with serious time constraints, well... my heart goes out to you.
I think the Boys did themselves, and their fans, PROUD!
One thing i wasw ondering, that chuck sounded like 3 three backing singers, espacially on satisfaction. what do you think? Did Lisa sing under the stage?.:-)
A friend of mine asked me on Monday what was the middle song they played..... told him RJ; he loved it, he had not heard it before and was very impressed.

It was indeed very good. One of the best stages they ever had, if not THE best. I don't think the "pit area" of the stage is U2's idea though. I remember some other band having it in the early 2000s or in the late nineties. If I remember correct it was some sort of 80s band. Somebody posted a pic of it on Shidoobee a long time ago.
a supercool and brilliant performance by the Rolling Stones.
As i already said in another thread, I was very sceptical about the whole NHL/Stones deal...cause i thought it would be impossible to put 2 heavyweights in the same ring...I mean..either NHL or Rolling Stones...but they managed it to make the halftimeperformance become an event itself by puting this fantastic stage with a superb lightshow ...
The band was on fire...raw,dirty,concentrated and hardworking...the sound from my TV was ok...and the crowd around the stage was so into it that I thought this could be Buneos Aires already as they were jumping and screaming.
All in all....this short performance made me look forward to barcelona again...108 days left.
by the way....the football game itself is very hard to watch....to much standing around...kind of boring..if you want to watch the real stuff....then go and get the real football........the worldcup this summer.... This is the real deal.
