That's the DUMBEST list I have ever seen! And that's a top 100 British albums list. I guess the editors at NME, probably a bunch of 20-something blokes who know nothing about the history of rock n' roll, consider the Stones Roses, Oasis, and Radiohead more important than the Beatles, the Stones, the Who, The Kinks etc. What crap! This issue is already out on newstands here in the States. I laughed my way through the whole article. Yeah, Franz Ferdinand's debut album is more important than Beggars Banquest, LIB, SF, etc. Hillarious . . .

I don't think you quite understand how these polls work. The Smiths, The Stone Roses, Oasis and so on, are the bands which are currently influencing today's crop and as a result, these are the bands that today’s youngsters are listening too.
Ten years ago, groups like Oasis and Blur was citing the Beatles and the Kinks as major influences, hence they faired better in these charts. That’s not happening so much now, hence these 60's groups sliding further and further down these lists.

Truth is this. If that poll were conducted in high streets up and down the UK or in shopping malls, then the results would've been different. The NME is a shit rag and is read by poncy students. It's all about what's cool at the moment. Classic rock acts like the Stones or pioneers like The Beatles are not as "in" as they once were. Don't get me wrong, I love The Stone Roses and al the groups currently drooled over in these lists, but I know my rock n' roll and I KNOW the Beatles and The Stones should always be up there, REGARDLESS of current trends!
Just a few years ago, the Beatles and Stones were still IN. They were still revered in most rock mags, and considered the greatest bands in rock history. However, that has not been the case very recently. NME has been around since the early 60's for Christ's sakes, and their editors should know better!

I'm sure that if the editors are people on their 20s, we won't see any Stones album in the list. I've seen a recent list (on UKMix) with young people voting (age between 18-25, more than 10.000 votes) and the Stones were #32 on their top 50 of best bands ever. The top 10 was something like U2, Coldplay, Radiohead, Pink Floyd, Queen, Led Zep. and the Beatles.

Well, that was kind of my point. A FEW years ago The Beatles (not SO sure about The Stones) were "in" and hence they're inclusion, but today it's different. As I've already stated. It's the top groups from the 80's and 90's that are the main influential force with today's crop of bands and as a result, readers of magazines such as The NME and Q pick up on this. I really don't think it's anything to get too offended about. I hardly think Jagger and Richards are bothered. I personally think they're "time" will come again. I don't know when, but that’s the beauty with music. ANYTHING can happen!
The NME has been around a little longer than the early 60's. Try the mid-50's! Yeah, back then they worshipped the Stones. Are you surprised? They were hip and current and just so happened to be releasing wonderful music. Today they're not. Today they're a nostalgia act playing to many people who have more money than sense. The Stones were COOL in the 60's. Too today's generation, the current Stones are not. I can perfectly understand that and that’s where a lot here stumble.
Somethin tells me the listmakers dont know their rock- & Stones- history. Neither have they heard Thin Lizzy, probably not at all. I could btw use the rest of the weekend just to mention the bands & artists & records among more established ones that should be up there.
Most listed are knapsu (Finnish word=Sissy) & just nuthin.
A shame!

little known Stones link - theres a tape of Stones Black & Blue rehearsals from Rotterdam in 1975 (quality isnt that great, the recordings last about 6 hours).
Imagine my surprise when hearing that tape for the first time to hear Mick 're enacting' that same 'this bloke came up to me' sketch for a few seconds
You can clearly hear him doing the "so I kicked him right in the balls" line!
NME still respect and support the Stones- the opening shows at Fenway got great reviews. The Stones legacy is often discussed and revered.
As for Q magazine, its gone downhill in recent years. Its obsessed with "top 100 lists", licking the bums of Chris Martin, Michael Stipe and the second-coming, (aka Bono).
Tend only to skip the pages, it takes about half an hour to read, but the Special Edition Stones "Q Classics" (out Feb 15th) should be good.
a bit about Derek & Clive: [www.phespirit.info] somewhere around here i have a Cook & Moore interview with Mick & Charlie - i'll upload mine if Gazza'll upload his. :E
Do not read the NME for a long time. But this list is reflecting readers'age. Had the Beatles, Stones, Who, Zeppelin, Floyd, Kinks top the list, they should change their name in OME. 3 Beatles, 2 Zeppelin, 2 Stones, 1 Kinks, 1 Who, 2 Bowie. Nor bad after 40-35 years. Most of the group listed, will I guess not stay in the pantheon of Rock music. It is more an opportunist list than a realist one.
