Kiedis sells Stones autographed guitar for 10 bucks... interesting anecdote
Posted by: BornOnTheBayou ()

I'm reading "Scar Tissue" by Anthony Kiedis right now...

Just finished this section where he describes the "battle" to sign the Chili Peppers between Warner Bros and EMI...

As baksheesh the EMI exec (Tommy Mottola I think) gave Kiedis a white guitar which had been signed by all the members of the Rolling Stones...

A few years later, (this was between One Hot Minute and Californication), during a desperate heroin binge he took the guitar to skid-row in L.A. and exchanged it for what he describes as "10 bucks worth of heroin... not enough to even get high on".

"It's just that demon life has got me in it's sway..."

I love the Chilli Peppers, but they have a long way to go before they rack up as much good music, or as much decadence, as the Stones. Vive la decadence! Viva la Stones!

The only chili peppers worth a darn are the ones in my burrito grande from Baja Fresh.

Well they will be taking a MAJOR STEP towards "rock immortality" with the release of their upcoming album in April.

This album, produced by Rick Rubin, originally was designed to be around 36 songs released in "3 phases". They chucked that idea and went instead with one album with around 24 songs on it. I'm cautiously optimistic that among those 24 songs will be, say, at least 6 to 8, perhaps 10 INCREDIBLE-@#$%&-FANBLASTASTIC tunes on the level of anything they've released to date. And they already have a great songbook of over 30 incredible songs in the bag.

Easily one of the greatest bands of all time, featuring hands-down the greatest bass player of all time, ... they slammed the door on "hair rock" and introduced the world to many of the great acts that opened for them (Pearl Jam, Nirvana, and Smashing Pumpkins to name a few) and these guys aren't 45 yet.

There's probably as much truth to this as there was in that clown's book "A Million Little Pieces"......now known as "A Million Little Lies"

Even the most strung-out junkie would know that they could get much more than $10 worth of smack for that guitar....gimme a break...he couldn't find a pawn shop in L.A. that would give him more than $10??

I say "Bullshite", Kiedes.....and no, he can't sing for shite either...

if you wanna read about "A Million Little Lies"...and lots of other very funny and interesting truths...

You'd have to read the situation.... it was like 3am in the morning and the pawn shops were closed. He did sh*t like that repeatedly, offing the guitar was just another piece of lunacy.

The book's a great read, by the way, several mentions of the Stones.

It's kind of funny that Kiedis held little value for this autographed guitar. he's the toughest of the Chili Peppers to have sign your RCHP albums. I have had him sign for me on a couple of occasions, but after RHCP shows, he always takes off without signing for the fans waiting outside. I have several fully signed RDCP items, but I still need Anthony on lots of stuff that Chad and John alreayd signed for me.

Born on the bayoou, have you met any of the Peppers? If you meet Chad, you can get in a very good conversation about music with him.

Wow, you are really insane. The Chili Peppers are DONE, unless you consider crap like "Scar Tissue," "Californication," and "By the Way" to be "INCREDIBLE-@#$%&-FANBLASTASTIC." They have given up on what they were and become VH1-friendly poseurs. If you're really psyched about this trend, you might also enjoy listening to Train or Maroon 5, or something.

Snake you're beyond hopeless....

1) You did not see any of the By The Way Tour gigs in 03 or 04 did you ? So why pose on here as an expert ?

2) If you consider Californication to be "crap" then your taste in music speaks for itself. It was the ALBUM OF THE YEAR, just to refresh your memory and has so many incredible tunes on it, easily their single best CD.

Oh yeah, good logic there Snake... If I like Californication then I must like Maroon (whoever they are) and Train (saw them once on TV)...

You've out-moroned yourself and that's an accomplishment.

Whether you like the music or not, the reality is that the new RHCP album will probably be the biggest selling album in Europe and much of the world this year and will also be a pretty successful album in the U.S..

They are far from being done from a commercial standpoint. The past 7 years have been by far the most successful in the career of this band that is now about 23 years old. That's saying a lot for such a long lived band to only now be hitting their career commerical peak.

I really don't care about their commercial success. Re-read my post: I said they have given up on their former musical direction in favor of becoming weak-ass adult-contemporary pop-rockers like Train and Maroon 5 (who are also quite commercially succesful, no doubt). And yet Kiedis still has the balls to say sh1t like this (from Rolling Stone):

"When asked if he felt the group was still relevant, Kiedis said, 'Yes. Because of who we are, the way we live and what we do, we could be having dinner with the queen of England and still maintain our punk-rock relevance. We could drive in limos and private jets all day long, and we'd still be more punk rock than bands that call themselves punk rock today.'"

If you ask me, Kiedis and Bayou are living in the same fantasy land.

Page 364, 365 of the paperback edition...

"...I began my own private mission to Mars, a furious round of benders that would consume my next few months...

On one of these benders I ran out of drugs at 4:30 in the morning. At that point in time I wasn't dialed in to ATM technology. When I needed money I'd go to a bank and take out a chunk of cash on a credit card or I'd visit an Amex office... but now I had no money, no dope, and was in a frenzy to get high...

What I did have was a beautiful white Stratocaster guitar signed by all of the Rolling Stones. Tommy Mottola had given it to me when he was trying to sign the Chili Peppers to Sony/Epic...

I figured I could go downtown and get at least a couple hundred dollars worth of dope for that guitar...

There was only one guy working the back alley where junkies sell their wares...

What can I get for this ? 'Nothing' he shrugged. You don't understand, this guitar is signed by the Rolling Stones...

He finally offered me the tiniest amount of heroin I'd ever seen... I was so desperate I bartered that signed guitar for drugs that would barely get me high..."

Bayou-The Chili Peppers nearing rock immortality with a new CD? Did you eat too many paint chips as child? Only a few bands have achieved that status. The Peppers have had a few hit songs, but so did Leif Garrett and The Partridge Family.
Turn on any FM station today. You'd be lucky to hear one Peppers song over a thirty day period. In ten years they will be on VH1's "Where Are They Now?" program.

The Peppers used to be good but started to lose me around Blood Sugar Sex Magic, which I thought was too long & overblown for its own good. Oh, the "Under The Bridge" video & Anthony's dancing man-boobs didn't help, either. Everything else I've heard since strikes me as just boring.

Their first four albums, though, were killer - especially the first one and Mother's Milk.

You know what I think it was? Rick Rubin. Great producer but the wrong guy for the RHCP. He's very meat-and-potatoes; the Peppers need to be day-glo.

If that doesn't make any sense . . . well, it's late and I've touched liquor!

Maybe at the Red Hot Chili Peppers Fan Club Awards it was the album of the year.
I know they'd put that sticker on the cd, but I don't know why. 'Album of the Year' sounds like they had won that award at the Grammy Awards.

I don't know when they were nominated for the album; 1999 or 2000. But in 1999 Santana won that award and in 2000 Steely Dan.
The peppers have one grammy for Give It Away and it's an unimportant one (Best Hard Rock Performance with vocal).

Not that Grammy Awards matter (just look at the stones: 2). But it's stupid to claim the award if you haven't won it.

I could swear that Californication DID win the Grammy, am I imagining things ? If so, I stand corrected. If it wasn't the grammy it was the Billboard award or some major industry award, not just a "sticker" they put on the album...

But if I'm wrong, I certainly stand corrected.

Regardless, it's their very best album, and anything but crap.

Since YOU consider it crap, you might compare your taste to over 800 "reviewers" on Amazon that give the album 4.5 stars out of 5.0... that makes it one of the most thoroughly "reviewed" albums on Amazon, probably. To maintain a 4.5 with over 800 people participating is quite a feat in itself.

Just to put that in perspective, Sticky Fingers has 180 reviews, and Let It Bleed has 140, both albums also scoring 4.5 out of 5.0

Give It Away is unquestionably one of the most awesome live songs anyone will ever hear in concert. Ranks right up there with "Satisfaction" from the Rolling Stones, "Saturday Nights Alright for Fighting" from Elton John, "Sunshine of your Love" from Eric Clapton, "Fortunate Son" Creedence, "Home Sweet Home" by Motley Crue, "Into the Groove" Madonna, "Know You Rider" Grateful Dead,... "Give it Away" is one of the all-time top 10 songs you'll ever hear any band play live... also has an incredible story behind the lyrics that you might check out. Very spiritual.

One friend of mine once said that he got into rock with Californication. And I said to him that californication isn't a rock song. It's a crap song, from a crap band.Oh man how you hear Californication and others from them when you have listened to exile and stick etc. This is way beyond me.

Re: Kiedis sells Stones autographed guitar for 10 bucks... interesting anecdote

I never said it was crap. I think it's a good album.

You need to make up your own mind and stop referring to polls and awards to convince people how great you think they are. Who cares about that? I adore Let the Thunder Cry by Jim Capaldi and that album is reviewed most of the time by 2 or 3 stars... I don't care... I like it.
And ofcourse Sticky Fingers and Let t Bleed have less votes... Those are 1971 and 1969 albums. Californication is from 1999 and therefore it sold a lot better in the amazon era... so also more checked out on the site and more reviewed.

We all know how much you like them... and ok... there's nothing wrong with liking a band, but stop defending them like they are gods and stop trying to convince everybody.

Some people like 'em, some don't. Period. My point of vue: 2 and a half good records (BSSM, Californication and some songs from One Hot Minute) but no classics and an aweful live band. They are pathetic if you try to compare them to the all time great bands and artists.

btw... they received 2 grammy awards... also one for Scar Tissue (Best Rock song).

Again, I'm just real curious what OTHER bands you listen to. Or is it the Stones and deep classic rock 24-7 ?

Do you listen to ANY bands of the past 20 years that are still touring ?? If so, who ?
