If Darryl Goes, Who Should Replace Him On Bass?

There's another thread where people are talking about what bass players auditioned to replace Wyman. Which of course leads to the inevitable discussion where people say how great Wyman was (which is very true) and debate the merits of Darryl Jones' playing.

I think some are being too hard on Darryl, saying he is terrible and unimaginative and a bad fit for the Stones. I wouldn't go that far. I think he is a good bass player and fits in fairly well with the Stones, although I agree he was not the best choice - they could have gotten somebody better. But no matter who they would have gotten, that person would not have fit in as well as Wyman.

That said, it would not hurt my feelings if the Stones got rid of Darryl. No sideman lasts forever with the Stones. A new bass player could really help the band kick it up a notch. Who do you all think would be a good choice?

Some have said Flea. He is a great bass player but I think his style is wrong for the Stones. Pino Palladino would be a good choice, if a somewhat safe one. What about somebody like John Paul Jones from Zeppelin? He is very versatile and wouldn't necessarily play in a Zep-like style. I also like the guy who is playing bass in the Allman Brothers now, Oteil Burbridge. He sounds great on the Allman's cover of Heart of Stone from their last album, Hittin' The Note.

"No sideman lasts forever with the Stones."

I don't know any good bass players to replace Darryl, but I really don't think the Stones as a live band is going to change its line up. It's been the same for so long, I don't see them replacing any of their -by now- good friends. It's too late in the game.

I'm not sure how close Mick and Keith are to Darryl. Not terribly close, as far as I know. Not that that would stop them. Mick and Keith have always been pretty ruthless when it comes to separating personal feelings from what is best musically for the band.

i hope they beg bill wyman to rejoin him...you know at 70 he's not going to be around forever...and the rest are not going to be able to sell tickets like they have done...so bill would let the band end, almost with all the same members as they started.......bring bill back!!!!!!!!

You would have a better chance of getting John Entwistle to play bass for the Stones than Paul McCartney at this point.

It should be me. I am younger than them at 53 but I've grown up with all their changes and styles. Basically my playing is a cross between Woody's style with the Jeff Beck Group and Wyman's tasty-groove-with-the-feel-of-the-vibe-of-the-song style, though I can do other stuff. At this stage in my career I'm interested in trying something completely wild and different so this will be a good gig for me. I will not let the boys or their fans down. Also, I sort of look "British", am thin, and still have a healthy head of hair. Please have Mick or Keith email me.

He got kicked out of the live band after 1981 - didn't tour with them at all in 1982. But of course he was back for Steel Wheels and has been back since. So while he does have many years of service, they aren't consecutive years of service. If he can be kicked out of the live band, even temporarily, so can Darryl.

Bobby also got kicked out before that. After the 73 tour they booted him. I always remember Keith talking about it in an interview later. He was talking about Bobby getting way too comfortable, thinking himself a Rolling Stone and having "baked potatoes stuffed with caviar" sent up to his room.
Of course DJ is here to stay. At this point no one is getting kicked out anymore. But if we want to dream, hmmm...Flea is actually not a bad choice at all. Some people might have a misconception of him as the rowdy string slapping naked monkey jumping around. The man is an excelltn sensitive musician. Very dynamic; he knows music. Plays any style with ease.
And I will sell him to you for $ 25.

My choice would be Charley Drayton.

ChelseaDrugstore, I will take you up on your offer of $25 for Flea. I will set him up in my living room, where he can jam along with Funkadelic records and entertain my guests.

Does that $25 include shipping and handling? Probably not, but he is small and only wearing a sock, so how much could it be?

Well wait wait..you mean you will be wanting him AVEC SOC?? That changes everything. Shipping bio-hazardous materials will be costing an arm and a leg. I will have to re-assess. get back to you winking smiley))

Actually, if you could include some pants on him and maybe some spare bass strings I will give you $50 plus shipping and handling smiling smiley

Joey Spampinato of NRBQ would be my choice. This guy is schooled in rock and jazz and has worked with Keith. He would fit fine.

after having seen cream dvd r.albert hall 2005, I would give jack bruce the first chance. He certainly has the playingfeel we miss from the wyman days. And the he has one of the most distictive voices in rock history. Really great soulful singer he is. the entrie Stones backupsingersline would be unneccessary. except Lisa

best
Dýri

Who should replace Darryl 'Darstadley' Jones?

That's easy.

Bill Wyman.

I hadn't thought about him; that's a pretty inspired choice. Too bad Cream isn't going to stay together after their recent reunion, but I hope Bruce keeps touring because I've never seen him. He and Baker should tour together and call it Bruce/Baker or something. It wouldn't be as popular as a Cream tour, but I bet if they got a good guitarist they could fill 5,000-seaters at least.

Yeah, I've seen this guy (NRBQ) a few times and I think he'd make an excellent choice as well. I thought he was actually being considered at one point after the BW departure??

BTW- If Bobby Keys has been on and off again so many times with the Stones wouldn't he be considered a lifer given his stature within their catalog and being regularly loyal when it comes to all things Stones? I mean obviuosly they like him, right?
