Right now Im listening to a show with Bob Dylan from January 16th and 17th 1998. The Rolling Stones also played there on these dates. How is that possible? Anybody knows this?

Not a mistake

Dylan played the theatre at MSG - the Stones played the main arena

Dylan was supposed to come on and play with the Stones on LARS after finishing his set on one of the shows, but it didnt happen

the stones played 14, 16 and 17 jan, i was there ! i travelled from uk for my first stones shows.

i believe dylan was playing in a smaller part of the msg complex ? tickets were mega bucks i seem to remember.

anyway, i think your dates are correct

Thanks Gazza.
Kind of strange. Both shows were at very high volume. Wouldnt it be a sound-mash for the people in the back-rows?

Dylan played the theatre on 16,17,18,20 and 21 January on a double bill with Van Morrison. Tickets were $75 and $45 (not really megabucks, compared to the Stones - the MSG Stones shows were the first of the really expensive priced shows, they did a few like this in early 98 as a 'trial run' for No Security.

Cant recall the exact ticket prices, but in general they had been $65 for the BTB tour up to that point, I think some went as high as $150-200 ++ for these 3 shows)

those 3 MSG shows really were excellent. probably the best of the entire tour.

I shall be similarly brave in just under 3 weeks time for shows at the same venue! Should be a fun few days

aside from the 5 times when Dylan has opened for the Stones in the last ten years, there have been a few more occasions where theyve played the same city on the same night that I can think of

Dylan played a run of shows at Radio City Music Hall in '89 at the same time as the Stones played Shea Stadium, and he was also playing Toronto on August 16 2002 on the same night that the Stones played their Licks tour warm up show at the Palais Royale

Im only brave enough to go to USA when I have won the tickets:-)
Its a good thing that some people have such feelings for music to do such a thing!

yeah I cant think of too many other venues in the world where that would be likely to happen (ie under the same roof), although theres a few where its technically possible

Hey Erik - me and a friend went to MSG in september, and we´re from Trondheim. And we met a bunch of other norwegians as well, which was very cool. In may I´ll see the opening show in Barcelona. Yesterday, I took the bus down to Lillehammer ( a six hours drive) to see the amazing Backstreet Girls. I love to travel and see good rocknroll shows.

Was it somehow possible to see both Dylan and the Stones those nights?
It must´ve been one hell of a good feeling in MSG those nights! Rock´n rolls greatest band and artist...

Hello Ringo! I travelled to Oslo in 2001 or 2002 to see Backstreet Girls. And I met them in a pub in Oslo after the Dylan show in October, and had a chat, even though I dont know them. Have a good trip to Barcelona! I would have too if I could, but Im broke.

on the same night in 98? Not as such, the shows would have overlapped. Dylan's show finished earlier, which is why theyd hoped to rush him onto the b-stage of the Stones show via a tunnel/walkway immediately after, but the timing didnt quite come off

Yep, many of those dylan shows are in SBD too. Right on the heels of "Time out of mind", these shows were my favourite.

Theyre not in soundboard. The first soundboard of 1998 in San Jose in April, and Minneapolis in (cant remember). But the sound on these NYC concerts are PERFECT, but they are audience recordings.

It was Van Morrison and Bob Dylan! I went to Friday Bob and Van, Saturday Stones, Sunday Van and Bob, Monday Les Paul! One of the all time great Music weekends for me. New York can handle it all. I heard that the Stones wanted to play Like A Rolling Stone on the B stage and Bob didn't want to do it there. Funny but the reason I got to see the Stones was I couldn't get the Saterday night ticket for Bob and Van. What a happy disapointment. The Stone rocked that night and Kieth said he didn't care cause he was going to hawaii the next day. I got to say the same thing in 2003 in Phoenix, I went to Hawaii the next day.

I was going to see Dylan the last night but was broke after 3 Stones shows !!

I too was sat in front of the Spice Girls (the last train to obscurity was waiting for them in Penn Station !) and left one night in the company of Iggy Pop whom seemed quite miserable.

Still the 16/1/98 show was one of the best shows I ever saw, got my 8th and 9th show at MSG next month.

I went to the Jan 14th show in 1998 and paid $500 for my 7th row ticket but I bought from a broker! When the Stones moved to the B stage and started to play " Like A Rolling Stone" everyone expected Dylan to appear maically, but NO! What a let down, it was so expected! So Gazza, your time is drawing near for your excursion to our shores! Are you going to Boston also or just New York shows? I decided to try to go to the Boston show, Jan 13, no ticket yet!

Just New Yawk, Debra - arrive the day of the 1st show and come home on the Sunday evening

I was deemed too big a risk to National security to be allowed entry for any longer, I'm afraid...

and I've only been allowed in on the condition I dont whine about the setlists, so I may yet end up being deported.

Very funny Gazza! I hope you have a wonderful stay in the BIG APPLE! Don't mind the maggots! Maybe you'll be treated to an exciting new set list with ten gems and only 5 war horses! I hope you send me your review upon your return. I may get my lazy boyfriend to email some of my photos to you in the meantime.

just goes to show who the bigger act is once again , the stones rule even over
the mighty dylan

DYLAN was supposed to play LARS on the last show, 1/17/98

he was turned down at the last minute because the KING- Mick Jagger said no.,

due to Dylan's refusal to rehearse the song.

BoB zimmerman( the world's greatest prophet -dylan) was stuck at the altar,

he had arrived in the arena and was waiting to play.

don't doubt DearDr, NYC is my turf

i saw Dylan going into the arena, and I have multiple sources at stage who confirmed

I'm glad he didn't show anyway, his performance with them at other venues was horrendeous

hardly rocket science if you're talking about commercial popularity.

so by the same yardstick, Michael Jackson and Garth Brooks 'rule' over the mighty Stones?
