just heard a rumour.. Oz show announced early Feb, Melb gig at Flemington

The problem is a lack of stadiums available in Meblourne as both the MCG and Telstra Dome are unavailable due to the AFL football. There is a strong rumour that Flemington racecourse - home of the Melbourne Cup maybe used for the Melbourne show/s as it can handle 100,000 people at Cup time.

Springsteen played Flemington years ago, we heard it all the way up in Ascot Vale, the locals complained about the noise tho

It would have been about 1985, Hansel. Met my wife 19 years ago & it would have been about a year before that when I was living in Ascot Vale.

Bruce did indeed play Australia in early 85 on the Born in the USA tour

Skilled Stones hopes roll on

GEELONG'S bid for a Rolling Stones concert is still alive, despite tour promoters holding discussions with Flemington race course officials.

Geelong Mayor Peter McMullin said yesterday the city's bid for a concert at Skilled Stadium was still an option.

In fact, Cr McMullin said Skilled Stadium had advantages over Flemington, which was more one-dimensional compared with the amphitheatre effect at the football ground.

``They are both of similar size and you could probably get more into Skilled Stadium,'' Cr McMullin said.

``It's really up to the promoters where they ultimately choose, but we're certainly well in there with a chance.

``We're certainly in there and we're pursuing it actively.''

Cr McMullin said he personally held discussions with the Dainty Corporation.

He said the Victoria Racing Club was in talks at the same stage.

The mayor said he had personally seen the Rolling Stones perform at the MCG, and he recommended them to anyone.

The MCG and Telstra Dome are unavailable during April because of football commitments, prompting the City of Greater Geelong to make a bid.

Skilled Stadium could be available on April 22 or 29, when the Cats play away games. The Geelong Falcons are scheduled to play at Skilled on April 29, but that could be changed.

At one stage it was felt the band's Bigger Bang tour would skip Victoria because no suitable venue was available.

That'd hold 80 odd thou don't you think?

They could play Brisbane at the Gabba a couple of times, Olympic Stadium in Sydney twice plus Football Park in Adelaide at least once (God forbid they never came back to Perth with only 50 odd thousand waiting to see them at Perry Lakes stadium or Subiaco oval or the WACA).

If they priced their tix the same as U2 and played stadiums throughout the country they'd sell a million tix.

But we know that ain't gonna happen.....

Have you ever lent somebody $20 and never seen them again? It was probably worth it.

Surely they won't play in Geelong (a.k.a. Sleepy Hollow!).

Flemington Racecourse is ideal.

Waverley Park has been demolished - no longer.

Punt Road Oval (next door to the MCG) would be another option, although I doubt 50000 could fit into that.

Punt Rd Oval would be a disaster.You'd have people hanging around the perimeter outside the fence and spilling onto the rd.Also,the yuppies would complain about the noise level.
