I hate to say it but for the most part the Motown covers are considerably worse than the blues or Chuck Berry covers.

I think Ain't Too Proud to Beg is okay and Just My Imagination is actually quite good because they make it into what sounds like a Stones song more than any other Motown cover.

I'll give Hitch Hike a thumbs up as well. It fits in perfectly well with the pre-Satisfaction Stones sound.

I'm not a huge fan of Motown covers, really. I far prefer the originals, although a few of the Beatles' efforts are very good: Money (That's What I Want), for example. If I were to pluck for a Stones rendition, I would have to go to Marvin Gaye's Hitch Hike.

This was released in 1957, and pre-dates Motown by a couple of years. The first Motown releases were in 1959.

Both studio and live versions.

I'd say Imagination, GO GO, I don't know why (If that counts) and Proud to Beg because they really made their own.

Hitch Hike is also a great one, although closer to the original.

And these two were Stax.

Imagination from Hampton is one of the best.

Going to a GOGO is another one.

The Chuck Berry tunes were the better covers.

It was good to see them play Ain't Too Proud to Beg in Detroit a couple of years ago,

Ain't Too Proud To Beg and Cry To Me. The rest, ehhh.

Ain't Too Proud To Beg is killer. The snap of the beginning. It's a great slap in the face after If You Can't Rock Me!

The video is horrendous as they all were then. Fantastically awful.

Definitely Ain’t Too Proud and Imagination.
Live, they’re damn near perfect. And yes, better than the originals.

In terms of delivery, yes, although the IORR version of Ain't Too Proud To Beg is killer; the SOME GIRLS Imagination is weak when you compare it to the STILL LIFE etc version: live, it's perfection. It really comes across. It has ass. It has weight. It moves. Everything their album version is missing. The album version is anemic in comparison.

The original is basically a ballad but the Stones live performance gives it that push of being what the jolt in a cup of coffee is: a fantastic R&B song.

The Stones always improve Motown for me.

I don't listen to much original Motown.

Stax is another matter.

they cover Stax very well too ...but it's usually gutsy enough already.

I've always liked and listened to original Stax.

Well, there’s a few ‘Stax’ recordings mentioned here, already!

Someone name-checked ‘Cry To Me’ - it was released on the Atlantic label!

This is a thread about ‘Motown covers’ - not soul, in general!
