Where is Chuck Leavell?

He is not credited on the album and was not present for the kickoff in NYC. Is he out of the band again like during Bridges to Babylon?

Chuck's wife is having some serious health problems. I'll leave it at that.

Chuck was on the B2B tour or do you mean the album?
Mick has praised him over the years, even saying that without him there wouldn't be the Stones any more. I imagine that it is probably because of personal reasons.

Cheers,

He seems like such a nice person. I don't see why he is disliked by some?

For me, Chuck's work is extremely important! he is the best session man they can have.
In this new job, the lack of him is very noticeable.

Damn that is bad. Hope she recovers soon.

RE Chuck I think he is essential to the live/touring machinery but he is pretty useless when it comes to recording new music.

In other words he is 100% reliable - which is good for live performances - but I do not think his piano licks are super-creative. Therefore Mick and Keith do not invite him to studio sessions.

Already the case in 2015 so he had to beg (according to a post on his blog) to record overdubs for B&L.

He's "useful" on stage/rehearsals, not in the studio.

I don't think anyone dislikes the individual Chuck Leavell, especially as nobody here knows him personally. It's more the combination of his utter non-RnR looks and his style of plinky-plinky piano playing and cheap electric keyboard sound live on stage.

To gastoni’s post
Ian Stewart
Al Kooper
Nicky Hopkins
Billy Preston
Are all much better than he is, IMO

I still think he's one of the best around.

Listen to Jessica, Drops of Jupiter, She Talks To Angels. And Clapton's Unplugged would be boring without him.

Well that shoots down the "busy elsewhere" theory then...maybe he's gone for good this time...Clifford can certainly fill in as the "musical director" and keyboard player. They'd need someone to play the "missing instruments" that are patched on Clifford's keyboard though.

sure but in defense of Chuck these 4 are better than 99% of all rock/blues piano players in activity since 1945.
Chuck got the job not because he is as talented as the 4 ones you mention but because he is reliable, that is alcohol/drug-free. He will not OD in his hotel room or pass out drunk backstage 10 minutes before showtime, therefore he is part of the solid backbone the band needs on tour.

Re: Where is Chuck Leavell?

I think the band took a turn when Chuck started playing with them.

They lost the feel of the "boogie woogie" playing of the other keyboard players. The songs just don't have the same groove as they did after the 1982 shows. They are slower, more drawn out and sometimes too long.

He is an essential part of the band now and understand.

I'll wait for the criticism.

It was only one show. Stu was still with them. I didn't notice him much at Leeds.

Chuck has performed several times this year with various acts and as the main event. He has had to cancel a few shows. His wife is dealing with a health issue but I’d look for him to be back on tour with The Stones come Spring/Summer.

He played the whole 1982 tour instead of Ian McLagan who played in 1981 next to Stu. It was 1981 where He joyned for one show only (Atlanta).

Re: Where is Chuck Leavell?

Sorry if my memory failed me after 40+ years. I do not remember him at any of the 82 shows except Leeds.

In 1982 he would have followed Stu.

After that he was the primary player.

I'll wait for a correction or criticism.

I am not a fan of his style of playing and I think it has had a negative impact on the band. I am entitled to my opinion and yours is irrelevant.

This is not about how you think he is, it's about WHERE he is.
Can you stop your judging stick for a second?????
This is a thread about Worrying about Chuck.
About asking if he is well.
Not about what kind of tune he was playing the the 2nd show Detroit 1840.

Re: Where is Chuck Leavell?

Charlie Watts suggested Darryl and Ian Stewart suggested C. Leavell.
After those two recommendations I realized that neither Charlie nor Ian were perfect.

I wouldn't mind hearing Benmont Tench doing a tour with the Stones.

Chuck was intentionally left off B2B for specific reasons that have been discussed here elsewhere and I don't feel the need to dig into again. I wondered if there had been another dustup but perhaps it is his wife, unfortunately, as another poster said. Hate if thats the case, if so.
