The Rolling Stones or just Rolling Stones?
Posted by: tomcat2006 ()

A funny question I know for a fan forum where we absolutely should know the basics inside out - but what exactly is the band's official name?

Is it 'The Rolling Stones' or just the 'Rolling Stones'?

I've seen both on official CD and merchandise releases...

(I'll keep this post short. I don't want to end up writing a definite article about the definite article. Boom boom!)

They own and have registered all the abbreviations and variations that are associated with the brand, which is: "The Rolling Stones", "The Stones", "Rolling Stones" and "Stones". No one else that is doing anything with music is allowed to use any of those terms and claim it their own. They can choose whatever name fits to a certain cover / poster / shirt design.

As I always see © Rolling Stones I would guess that is the formal or "official" version if that exists but I think they can choose whatever they like

The Rolling Stones. Always. Like on all of their sixties records. "The Rolling Stones" (their 1st LP), followed by "The Rolling Stones No.2" (their 2nd LP)...

When the article "The" gets dropped, something is definitely missing. An integral part of the band identity. As a fan of sixty+ years I don't like that. At all.

Then again, there may be more important issues...

Yes, I agree. It's always been The Rolling Stones for me. Or The Stones.

Yep, it's both since decades and there's no real "solution". Some years ago there was also a thread here on the same topic.

It was only 'Stones' for the No Filter-tour.

It changes. For instance, “The” is missing on the cover of Exile and Voodoo Lounge.

The Rolling Stones but its ended up just "Stones".
I'm happy with that, definitely the right name, they certainly didn't gather any moss, they shrug everything off, drink, drugs, women, cancer, heart disease , covid, age, injury, arthritis, incredibly resilient and persistent living legends.

You got the moon the sun, the air you breath and The Rolling Stones, they are still a part of our lives after all these years, just incredible.

"The Rolling Stones" (or just "The Stones" for short) refers to the band as a unit, or to the individual members.

"Rolling Stones" (nowadays often shortened to just "Stones" ) seems to be used now to brand music or tours or merchandise, etc.

It is the same thing, just like Mick and Michael Philip is the same person etc.

RS, Stones, The Rolling Stones, Rollarit (in Finland) and so on, the same band, the sdame music, we love them whatever they are called.

I've always called Eagles THE Eagles, despite the fact that Glenn Frey said specifically that its just Eagles.

I think the Grateful Dead are maybe the same? Not sure. I know I have them listed as THE Grateful Dead.

To me, its always been THE Rolling Stones. Live in concert they don't say "please welcome Rolling Stones", they say "please welcome to the stage, the greatest rock and roll band in the world THE ROLLING STONES."

As an example of what I am talking about...
Imagine if the band was introduced at a show: "Ladies and gentlemen, Rolling Stones!" It just doesn't sound right.

In this case, I think they would always use the word "The".

THE Rolling Stones, capped, boldface, italicized, underlined.

Lest there be no mistake; the one, the only, the original, the immortal, the irreplaceable and the definitive. Accept no substitute.

I'm frankly more concerned with Keith.

Is it Richards, or Richard?

I know Richards is how he was born, but Richard was cooler...wasn't it, in the late 60s?

When and why did he come back to the plural form?! It's not like there's two of him, he's totally unique!

If we're going to vary names (Rolling Stones, Stones, The Stones), what about "The Keith Richards"?!

That has a lot of gravitas.

Years ago I went to record stores an the Rolling Stones albums and singles were always under “R” for Rolling Stones.

I’ve seen both ways on the same CD. It’s definitely Rolling Stones.

Is it 'The Rolling Stones' or just the 'Rolling Stones'?

Brian Jones wrote in his letter on 2-Jul-1962 the "Rollin' Stones" :

So after the 'ashes snorting' incident, do you think that gives him licence to go back to "Richard"?

Actually if he snorted Bert, the plural makes more sense as he is now 2 people.

With Brian - "The Rolling Stones"

With Bill - "Rolling Stones"

With Daryl - "The Stones"

With Steve - "Stones and Company"

They’ve used just “Rolling Stones” since The Sixties.
The Beatles used just “Beatles” on ‘Abbey Road.’

Wasn't there a "Mick Jagger and his Rolling Stones" at any point?

Wrong, Keith Richards is synonymous with cool, the coolest name on the planet.

Maybe Keith shortened it because it was similar to Cliff Richard, definitely not cool.grinning smiley

Every record store I've been to ignores the "The" in all bands' names when filing albums. Not sure your theory holds up.

Or The Band

(oh, I see...you meant the order in which they were placed. I thought you were talking about the divider cards in record stores, which usually leaves the "The" off...unless it's The Band.)
