Atlantic city cancelled 2006 show.
Posted by: rollmops ()
Date: December 26, 2022 17:37

I had a discussion on Christmas' eve with a person who was convinced that the Stones cancelled the Atlantic city show in 2006 because Mick wanted to rest his voice for the shows at the Beacon theater which shows were filmed by Scorcese for the movie Shine a light.
I believe that Mick cancelled the show because he was sick.

Do we know for sure the reason for the cancellation?

My wife and I drove to Atlantic City from Buffalo for the show. It was postponed the day of the show. The show was immediately rescheduled for two weeks later.
Micks Dad had passed away the week before the show also. The shows went on.
During the show Keith said “they finally made it” and “it wasn’t his fault” with a little bit of humor. So we really don’t know if Mick was really sick or not.

I’m pushing almost 50 Stones shows that I’ve attended since 1975. This show was probably one of the best if not the best. Yes it was that good.

Apparently in Chuck Leavell's diary(book?) he confirms that Mick was really ill and the Beacon's second show had to be rescheduled to the next day so Mick's throat could rest.

The man delayed the burial of his father for two weeks so he could fulfill scheduled touring obligations. I don’t think the Stones cancel unless they absolutely must.

I had tickets and I recall all news outlets and insiders stated that Mick had a throat issue.

I was at the Vegas MGM show the night Micks dad passed away, and thankfully the show went on as planned - in fact it was amongst the best shows I saw during the ABB Tour,
but that might have been partially due to the fact that after the show my wife and I jumped in a cab to see Prince perform in a small club at the Rio Hotel/Casino after midnight.
A double whammy of the Stones at the somewhat small MGM Arena followed by Prince at the very small 3121 club --- good times.

Mick's voice was getting bad, and had to rest it for the Beacon shows. The Beacon shows involved film crews and the Secret Service for 'President Clinton and her husband."

They did not postpone the Beacon Theatre shows.

I remember arriving in Atlantic City and then finding out the shows were postponed. We had friends from Holland, Tokyo, and across the USA.

We had hotel rooms, so we stayed the night in Atlantic City.

The make-up show in Atlantic City was a good show with s nice set list.

The Borgata casino in Atlantic City officially presented the Rolling Stones for the 2006 Atlantic City show.

I happened to meet the head of the Borgata at a local event in my area. I asked him about the Borgata's connection with the Rolling Stones for that show in Atlantic City.

Larry Mullin told me, "We wanted the Stones to play the Borgata, but they wanted too much money."

The Borgata doesn't have any big venues to hold a big concert.

The second Beacon show was, indeed, postponed. I was at both shows and had to rearrange hotel, travel and work commitments. Not a complaint, just to verify.

Anyone with a ticket stub from the second Beacon show can confirm it too by the date on the ticket.

I’d bet it’s mentioned in the tour info here on IORR as well.

I know many were disappointed because the original Atlantic City Oct 27, 2006 show got postponed last minute, it happened late, at 2pm on show day, due to doctor's orders, and not due to save a movie recording. Mick had laryngitis already. Then they did the 1st Beacon show two days later, not good for Mick's voice.

The Beacon Theatre shows were scheduled for Oct 29 and Oct 31. The 2nd Beacon show was changed from Oct 31 to Nov 1, as announced Oct 30, due to Mick's laryngitis trouble.

I have lost count on how many shows I have lost then returned to later for a new date due to Mick's laryngitis troubles. It used to take 2-3 days, but some times it took a week, like in 1998 when Mick lost his voice completely in Nuremberg tour opening June 13, and they had to cancel both Milan and Bilbao. He was not ready until June 20 for Werchter Belgium.

The IORR News pages have a complete file of all IORR News entries and all important Stones events from 1997 to present if you check out the list at the very end of the current news pages.

This is from the IORR News Jan-Sep 2006 and Oct-Dec 2006:

Aug 10: Charity gig at the Beacon Theatre?
The Rolling Stones are rumoured to be performing at a charity gig at the Beacon Theatre in New York City on Oct. 29. The gig is part of the Bill Clinton 60's birthday celebration and fundraising for his charitable foundation, and will be filmed by Oscar-winning director Martin Scorsese.

Sep 29: Beacon Theatre NYC confirmed for Oct 29 and 31
The Rolling Stones are confirming they will be performing two shows at the Beacon Theatre in New York City on October 29 and 31. Tickets will be available to the public with details to follow shortly.

Oct 27: Atlantic City show rescheduled
The Rolling Stones announced today at around 2pm the cancellation of their show in Atlantic City, New Jersey, USA, due to Mick Jagger having laryngitis - sore throat, being unable to sing. A new date is set for this show on Friday Nov. 17.

Oct 30: Beacon show tomorrow rescheduled for Wednesday
The Rolling Stones have been forced to move their Tuesday, October 31st performance at the Beacon Theatre to Wednesday, November 1st. Following doctor's advice, Mick Jagger has been ordered to rest his voice. All tickets for the October 31 show will be honored on November 1. Show time will remains at 8pm. This is fresh from a press release received shortly before ticket pickup at the Beacon ended 8pm today.

Oct 31: Hawaii show cancelled, Vancouver, LA, Oakland shows rescheduled
The Fall Tour schedule has been changed in order to make it possible for Mick Jagger to recover completely from his throat problems. The Oakland show is moved to Nov 6. The Los Angeles show is moved to Nov 22. The Vancouver show is moved to Nov 25. The Honolulu show has been cancelled.

Thank you for the feedback.
I went to the cancelled show (5hour drive + hotel) and had to go back on the 17th of November. Although I was deeply annoyed I did not doubt that Mick's illness was real. I don't believe the Stones would "play games" with their audience by cancelling a show without real justification.

I think contractually it would be pretty hard for them to do that.

I have loved the rolling stones a lot for a long time and still do. I always try to be rationnal when I get into a discussion where the stones become the target of criticism. I understand that the Stones are so "big" that people assume or believe things are not true about them sometimes with a positive angle and sometimes with a negative one. With the Alantic city fiasco, although I suffered the consequences of it, I stood up to defend the stones,in the name of what I hope is the truth.

Oh my God ,my personal deep with The Rolling Stones!! Just look what “bv” wrote!!
They canceled one and one show only. HAWAII and on the excact same date as Honolulu was supposed to be, they played Los Angeles!! angry smiley YES, I’m still furious about THAT
The Rolling Stones only did that to safe money!! It was after all to expensive to travel to Hawaii with that huge stage for one show. So better cancel that….. angry smiley
But I had my ticket for the plane to the show in Honolulu Hawaii, that could be rescheduled but not canceled…. So sitting there and yes even flying by LA moody smiley

Well, there's also the miracle of Keith:

May 11, 2006: Keith Richards is discharged from the hospital in Auckland, New Zealand, but stays in the city as an
outpatient. He is given a blood thickener and told to stay off cocaine.

After falling off a branch of a tree (shrub, as Keith said), and clanging his head on its trunk.

Stay off cocaine or off coconut trees?

Still wondering what was going on that tour. In 2006, so after surgery, keith was great. But in 2007 in Europe he had some really really really bad gigs (before improving halfway the tour)

He fell down at Werchter during Satisfaction on the B-Stage too. Werchter (especially the 2nd half) and Frankfurt were the worst shows I sae regarding Keith. I was at 6 Out of the last 7 shows that year and he was great again

I was at that Helsinki show. He fell over twice, actually. First during She's So Cold and another time as they docked back on the main stage at the end of HTW.

Mick was furious! Charlie just laughed it all off. grinning smiley

[iorr.org] Holy cow - I didn't hold back any punches in my initial review. Dean who? winking smiley

Worst Stones show I've ever seen. Glad it wasn't my last. But it was the last time they ever played Finland. Still kinda bummed about that cancelled Helsinki July show...

I saw 9 shows that tour including opener in Werchter (last time ever they finished with Sympathy) and O2 II and III. The reason he was in that particular state was not the 'tache but the fact he lost Doris in the spring.

Keith had a lot to deal with over those couple of years.

The bump on the head, the surgery and subsequent enforced lifestyle changes, the sad death of his mum... and Patti's illness.

It was nice to see by the o2 shows that he'd managed to come through and bounce back with most guns blazing...

... but without the 'tache and that silly Chuck Berry style sailor's hat grinning smiley.

Did some reading about 2006 and 2007. Those were not nice times. Rumours about Mick wanting to tour without Keith and having meetings with Jeff Beck. The uncertainty of 2006 summer going ahead. Cancellation of the Hawaii gig, lots of cancellation and resheduling all around. Also the last times sales where poor. I remember Paris 2007.. That did not look pretty. But also Werchter, Nijmegen at max 50% capacity. And ofcourse Keith touring in 2007 when he clearly should not have.

Still a great tour with some awesome gigs with the best stage I have seen.

The vibe around the band is so much better these days. The love between Keith and Mick is on another level since the 2014 tour.

If you can find the bootleg of this show it is great. It's called Home On A Bus.

Mick said during the concert that Atlantic City is a place that you arrive by limo but go Home On A Bus.
