One other possible reason - they get treated like royalty on the road. Adulation of fans worldwide, the applause, women throwing themselves at you - it's all about EGO!

Money.

If they wanted to play and do it for the music then they would do just that - play. Instead we have this over the top rock show that sells more tickets. They sell more tickets to bring in more money to pay for the show and it gets into this vicious cycle of ever-escalating ticket prices just to make that extra buck from concert goers. I said concert goers, not necessarily fans. But now fans have to pay more and more and the Stones have to charge more and more to make any money--- which is what they want to do.

Think about it... If the music was really that important to them anymore don't you think we would have had more studio albums since BRIDGES TO BABYLON? Eight years and only one new album? Even if Mick was the one who did most of the writing on this one its not showing that much enthusiasm for the music.

Although I must say that BIGGER BANG is the best studio album they have put out since VOODOO LOUNGE. Oh, wait... there was only one other album in that time. Never mind!

Neither, according to many posters here.

The setlist sucks.

Their ability to play has left the building. Mathijs even said that some of their guitar playing on the new album was soooo bad even he could play it.

Shows are not selling out. They have to resort to trying to sell Turkey T-Shirts just to meet expenses.

I guess its time to load up the trucks and go the hell home.

I think its clear by looking at the lame set lists that they don't care much for the music. They probably are more concerned with how the stage looks then they are with the music. Afterall, they have to play Miss You when the stage starts moving to the center of the stadium. So there again the music is not what comes first.

For the first time in well over 30 years I have been truly disappointed with the Stones. I hope this tour keeps turing off fans so they can't sell out stadiums any more, maybe then they will start doing smaller shows where they can't hide behind the big stages and cameras.

That's my feeling too, exactly.

Well, if the songs they play are lame, why go? Stay home for Gods sake. You know what you get....

Let's turn this the other way around: Would they tour for a year and a half if they didn't think it was fun?

Amyone who has been on a club show, or been up front on any venue, can easily see that they really really love what they do. They're all smiles and laughter, and they are really making an effort to play well and give a hell of a show.

The ticket prices would be much more pleasant if they were cut by 50%, no doubt about it. But remember, they were screwed in the 60s and 70s, and they want to have what they can get. It's understandable, even if it's annoying to the fans.

But no way they would do it if they didn't have fun.

thats certainly a factor

A lot of it isnt simply the making of money but the ego involved in still being in demand, successful and highly paid.

Money and ego are certainly linked.

Just because you don't like hearing Miss You doesn't mean the band doesn't like to play it.

That's exactly what I said in another thread. And that's the reason why Jagger is still with the band since he had to face the fact that when going solo, he could not reach the same level of success as with the band. And, unfortunately, the Stones have ceased to define 'success' by foremost artistic values - and money playing a second role - as a consequence of artistic success. By now, money and ego come first, and music plays the second fiddle. If it requires stadium shows, giant stages and a setlists of warhorses to guarantee success the safe way, they go for it. If these ingredients result in bordedom on stage and uninspired playing, they do not care anymore. Because music and artistic satisfaction play second fiddle.

they're touring to get away from their wives

"The glory, darlin', the glory!" said Keith at the 1994(?) press conference.

Money is, for them, a very happy outgrowth of the affection and adulation that their work has been generating for four decades--the adulation that they can experience most vividly when standing on a stage with 60,000 people hollering away at them.

And the sheer project of putting together a spectacle like the "A Bigger Bang" show has its own creative challenges and rewards--perhaps more than actually choosing songs, arranging songs, writing songs and even performing songs? Jagger pretty well tipped his hand on this point in September's "Rolling Stone" interview with David Fricke.

Another aspect: Think about the hundreds of people who work--directly and indirectly--with the Stones. For the vast, vast majority of that group, money is not the abstraction that it now is for Mick or Keith. The tours are lucrative and even necessary for that extended Stones family. Retirement plans create a very powerful impetus for keeping the show on the road.

Whether it be for the money, the music, the fame,or ..for "all the beer you can drink and all the girls down the front" -- the stones are on the road!! And,in 5 years,10 years, whatever it may be,we'll be reminiscing on the days when we COULD see them!

So,whatever the reason,I for one count myself as a lucky fan! Roll on!

IrelandCalling4, I know what you're saying! The Stones were the best in 1964 and are the best in 2005!!

Excuse me Sidonia!
Correct me if I'm wrong but in 1964 they didn't have that much merhandise. But now they have a lot! So the 2005 tour is much better than!

Touring to alleviate boredom, promote the new CD and lastly, for the love of the music.
It's gotta get boring cranking out Satisfaction, Tumbling Dice etc.. night after night year after year if there were not the huge paycheck and the end of the rainbow.

here's a point i wanted to make about this

there is a so called fan club that you can sign up for that gives you pre-sale tickets.. it's $100 but if you want pre-sale for more than one show yuo have to sign up for it twice

a few years ago i joined the fan club as well to get tickets.. what did this fan club offer me apart from that.. a CD i already had anyway and nothing else.. i didn't get any newsletters or anything and the virtual ticket thing was open to everyone who had a ticket.. i didn't get any exclusive on-line content that wasn't on the virtual ticket site either

no letters either and once the tour was over the fan club didn't stay around for another year either and offer anything

some club for fans that and the same thing is happening this year

also they've taken a back hander from Amex so you can only get tickets if you have one of those cards which i'm sure is against EU rules

Whether it's for the music or the money I don't know. I suspect a little of both.

I don't think they can or will continue in to the future though with the current line up. The Stones need a lead guitar player. Otherwise their live shows are going to become a rather sad and pathetic joke.

neither nor! i think its the glory, the prestige and the success, which they measure in money and the number of audience. If it had be the music, they would be more experimental and would not take the easy road playing in the first place the "same old songs" all the time and all over the world! And of course it´s aggravated by the fact that they get older and older, and still want to prove that they are still capable of being in the centre of attention and are no. 1 on the road!
