Once you take away the fact that "Rocks Off" lives in the best neighborhood imaginable--next door to "Rip This Joint" and "Tumbling Dice," just down from "Shine A Light" and "Let It Loose"--things get a little clearer:
"Slave" is a one-of-a-kind shining moment for the Stones. Nasty, diamond-hard funk with Clearmountain's unique sheen. And, my god, Sony Rollins...
"go down to the supermarket, steal somethin' off the shelf..."
Have ya ever wanted to be right in the studio with the Stones? Listen to Slave again and you can really feel it. I don't care how many tracks were laid...it always makes me feel like I'm there with them.
Rocks Off is a classic on the penultimate album, but Slave is a one of a kind experience...brilliant on every level...vibe, beat, guitars, vocals, horns.
Used to dance to this at the end of every night at Rockaways club in NYC back in 81, where a DJ loved Tattoo You and the fact that 15-20 hard core fans went nuts..in fact he'd follow with Worried about You...what a time it was!
Rocks Off. I love Slave now, but it didn't do much for me when I first heard it at 15 years old. Rocks Off I loved right away, and continue to do so today. Therefore, the fact that it's non-generational (is that a word? hehe) forces me to choose it.
Wasn't looking too good, but I was feeling real well.
Rocks Off and Slave went toe-to-toe for a long time before Rocks Off was able to pull away with its 3rd win, after squeaking by Let It Bleed and crushing Memo From Turner.
Now it's on to challenge #4: Hailing From Beggars Banquet and coming in at a time of four minutes and forty seconds . . . Stray Cat Blues.
So, . . . Rocks Off? or Stray Cat Blues?
