Cage Match®: LIB's Midnight Rambler v. Loving Cup
Posted by: camper88 ()
Date: November 16, 2005 04:53

Here's the drill:

For 24 hours we vote on song 1 or song 2 (this time it's Midnight Rambler and Loving Cup) after 24 hours--voting stops around 21:00 on the IORR clock--we declare a winner and that winner goes up against another challenger. And once again, two songs enter and one song leaves.

If a song manages to survive 5 challenges in a row then it gets elevated to the Stones Heaven. People who vote are encouraged to take the 10 minutes or so to listen to the two songs just before they vote. Voters are encouraged to vote only once . . . no Chicago-style voting (early & often).

Midnight Rambler just keeps rambling, beating All Down the Line and It's Only Rock'n'Roll. Now it's on to Loving Cup

Yes, We now move on to round 3 for Midnight Rambler . . .

So, Let It Bleed's Midnight Rambler or Exile's Loving Cup?

Keith wrote 'em both. And he wrote them 20 years apart. Different decades, different highs. They are both beautiful.

I think I just learnt the true meaning of 'opportunism'.
Or have I missed some step in this poll?

What a great thread - listened to both - I'd forgotten what a great song Slipping Away is - must start listening to those "less favourite" albums again!! But Angie gets my vote. (Maybe if Angie wins, it should go up against Streets of Love next!!)

The worst thing about Slipping Away is that in the end it goes on way to long repeating "slipping awayyyyyyyyyyy".

I think Slipping Away is beautiful song, but i give my vote for ANGIE!

Keith wrote both of them in different decades and it shows. Angie is a masterpiece from a band that had just been on it's peak. The intro is probably one of the sweetest and greatest things ever written on a guitar. On the other hand, Slipping Away shows a mature artist with beautiful lyrics. He probably couldn't have written it in 73, but there again he probably couldn't write Angie in the 90's either.

Angie is an all time masterpiece, but my vote goes to Slipping Away.

...and mine to "Angie", though i do also like Slipping Away! i think Angie is one of the best Stones ballads, beaten only by Ruby Tuesday, Wild horses and Beast of burden!

I'm a bit afraid this "Hall of Fame" will become the "Hall of Lame" full of songs like "Thru and thru", "Coming down again" and "Losing my touch" but missing the essence. Some guys will leave their footprints up and down this "Hall of Fame".

For me there is no doubt which of these songs is the better one. Ok, they could have left away the violins. Ok, the lyrics are a little kitschy. Ok, the post-1973 live versions often suck.

Still "Angie" is the better song by miles. Essential Rolling Stones. Essential Keith composition as well.

Since both are very good, I must abstain.
