Angie.....love Slippin' Away...but Angie surpasses it's beauty...the acoustic geetar picking and piano touches are supreme

Drove outta Montauk this afternoon, right past The Memory Motel and straight into the sunset. The Memory is a world-class fleabag--but also a perfect joint in which to spend "a lonely night" with a lady.

(If you want a grade-A sour look, go into the barroom and put on the namesake track from "Black And Blue." Whoever is working the bar has heard that tune a few times before.)

Also, the motel is not quite as "down by the ocean" as the old Andy Warhol estate where the band actually stayed while rehearsing in '75. I have been able to hang out at Andy's a few times and let me tell you, there are some twisted old spirits in that place.

I think "Slipping Away" destroys--destroys--"Angie."

And "Memory Motel" outclasses either of those.

Interesting post, Rev. I'm originally from LI but have never made it out to montauk. I'll be sure to pick something else from the jukebox when I do!

cc:

Montauk is worth the trip. It's a whole different thing than East Hampton or Sag Harbor, etc., much less places "up Island." Very barren and windswept. A whole lotta sky. Best to go in September, when the crowds have thinned and the swimming is at its very best. As great as it is when the tourists leave though, the place gets a little bit eerie: "A drinking village with a fishing problem."

It must have seemed like The End Of The Earth to the Stones when they were there in '75. The Warhol compound sits on more than 50 acres and encompasses a private cove for swimming. When you're on that property, there is no way of knowing that there is another human alive, anywhere. Pretty cool for oceanfront property three hours outside of Manhattan. When you see the shots of Woody sitting in an Adirondack chair outside one of the cottages you can tell he must have felt like he'd gone to heaven.

Like I said, the Memory Motel is um, extremely funky. But cool as an outpost of Rock'n'Roll. Rough and ready, baby. They sell t-shirts and I remember first seeing people wearing them at the MSG shows in '98.

Whatever my personal connections, though, I believe I can make a balanced critical judgement:

"Memory Motel" is far superior to "Angie."

"...it's just some friends of mine bustin' down the door."

Sorry, cc. One other point about the Memory Motel:

The barroom has all kinds of goofy, low-rent Stones artifacts on the walls: bootleg "Voodoo Lounge" concert t-shirts and stuff like that. It's kind of a touching tribute to the band.

Also, they have many, many Stones albums on the jukebox--not just "Black And Blue."

Karoke Night is on Fridays.

Sounds great... and I think I can probably convince whomever I go with that we're just going to montauk for the intrinsic appeal. Then we'll "happen upon" the stones sites!

Joni's on South Edison for breakfast or lunch. An easy walk from the Memory, actually.

The owner is a friend and one of the kindest and most beautiful women you'll ever meet. Amazing wraps, salads and sandwiches, but terrible coffee. They just can't seem to work it out.

They have Stones records and a lot of old R&B on the stereo most days. (Open only Fri.-Sun. during the off season.)

They're both classics and would be in my top 25. I'd give Angie the nod, though.

I'm sick and tired of this poll already. So I'm gonna save ya all lots of time by announcing the overall winner and runner-up after the Rolling Stones vast catalogue of songs has been thoroughly reviewed and analyzed in all possible ways.

The overall winner decided by a unanimous vote ----

1. BROWN SUGAR

Runner-up---

2. Gimme Shelter
