Montauk is worth the trip. It's a whole different thing than East Hampton or Sag Harbor, etc., much less places "up Island." Very barren and windswept. A whole lotta sky. Best to go in September, when the crowds have thinned and the swimming is at its very best. As great as it is when the tourists leave though, the place gets a little bit eerie: "A drinking village with a fishing problem."
It must have seemed like The End Of The Earth to the Stones when they were there in '75. The Warhol compound sits on more than 50 acres and encompasses a private cove for swimming. When you're on that property, there is no way of knowing that there is another human alive, anywhere. Pretty cool for oceanfront property three hours outside of Manhattan. When you see the shots of Woody sitting in an Adirondack chair outside one of the cottages you can tell he must have felt like he'd gone to heaven.
Like I said, the Memory Motel is um, extremely funky. But cool as an outpost of Rock'n'Roll. Rough and ready, baby. They sell t-shirts and I remember first seeing people wearing them at the MSG shows in '98.
Whatever my personal connections, though, I believe I can make a balanced critical judgement:
"Memory Motel" is far superior to "Angie."
"...it's just some friends of mine bustin' down the door."
