Candy......stones involvement?!

Anybody remember the film CANDY.It came out around 1968 /69.Cram packed with Big names.....the like of James Coburn, Walter Mathau, Richard Burton, Marlon Brando, John Astin [ Gomez from original Addams Family tv show]and Ringo Starr,to name but a few.
I remember before it came out, I read somewhere that The Stones were supposed to be writing some songs for it. In the end The Byrds and Steppenwolf supplied the songs and Dave Grusin did the soundtrack to this film.
When the film came out it was rubbished by the critics. To this day,it wasn't even considered good enough to be put on video in the UK. I thought it was great and saw it several times in the cinema.
Anita Pallenberg also had a part in it.....God what a sexy woman she was....
Anyway I got a copy of the dvd from USA and watched it last night . It is a masterpiece. The film is hilarious, the music is great, Ewa Aulin, who stars as Candy is gorgeous........
PS I always thought that the Stones wrote Child of the moon with this film in mind............anybody know anything?

very strange film. Dont know about 'masterpiece', though..! Only ever watched it because Brando is in it and I'd watch him reciting the alphabet, in all honesty. Found it hard to watch, despite the obvious attractions of Ewa Aulin and Anita...

Anita Pallenberg is the only Stones link I can think of. Of course, Keith and Anita named their first born after Brando, so I guess this is where they first got to know him at length.

How long ago was it when you saw it Gazza!

I saw it only a few months ago. It was on some satellite channel in the UK late one evening. Certainly no more than a year ago.

Brando died in July 2004, and it was definitely after that

When cable tv first came around where I live ('78ish) it was on a lot. They used to play a lot of older, mostly unknown movies (like Rabid). I remember watching this one because I love Peter Sellers movies and thought it might like be like "What's New Pussycat". It was before I was a Stones fan so I wasn't watching out for Anita. I remember thinking it was in the vein of "Start the Revolution Without Me" or "Joseph Andrews" or "Barbarella", you know what I mean, a lot of silly sexual situations.

At the time, I didn't think it was that funny though, but I may have been too young to get a lot of the references. It would be interesting to see it now as an adult.

Wasn't looking too good, but I was feeling real well.

On a sort of similar note, I recently watched "Valley Of The Dolls II" featuring Strawberry Alarm Clock of "Incense and Peppermints" fame. In the band is future Lynyrd Skynyrd guitarist Ed King. It's a long way from I&P to Sweet Home Alabama!!!!

Candy was a legendary psychedelic movie for me from the mid-70's when I bought the soundtrack album for 50p at a market stall and loved it. I fell in love with Ewa Aulin just from the cover picture and the Byrds track 'Child Of The Universe' is one of my favourite songs of all time.

However, when I finally saw the movie in the early 90's I was very disappointed. It was basically a silly sexploitation movie with a few hip trimmings. I am still fond of it though for some of the trippy sequences esp. the one in the desert at the end with all the weird flags.

I am intrigued by the Stones link pecrystokes as this is news to me. Where did you hear about their involvement? They were good friends of the screenwriter Terry Southern so it's quite possible that he would have asked them to come up with a song for the movie.

Never seen the film, but I recall reading an interview with Mick c.1970 when Performance was released and he spoke about doing film soundtracks

"Film people wonder why musicians don't like working with them. It's because they don't treat them well. They all think they're so groovy. They think they can just snap their fingers. Keith and I were asked to do the music for Candy. We went to see these people and they were just bullshitters and jivers. They made such a scene and only wanted to pay us &2,000 flat with no royalties or anything with all those songs we would have to write. it is hard to make film soundtracks and rock-and-roll groups can't really do it."

I love that movie!! I really enjoy those 60s movies like Barbarella, Girl on a Motorccle, and Wonderwall. Anyone know of any other good movies in this genre, it is a little before my time!

Blow Up by Antonioni is cool. Great fashion during Swinging London. Plus, the Yardbirds at the Ricky Tick Club with a young Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page.

To Sir With Love is also around that time with Michael Des Barres. These are a little earlier than Barbarella ('65/66 vs. '69), but they're still fun.

I've never actually seen The Magic Christian, but that might be one to try.

HI Tseverin, I first heard about Stones involvement before the film came out. I think it was an article in Melody Maker . Then as Casino Boogie mentioned, Mick mentioned it in an interview that the stones were asked to do some songs for the film.
There was also rumour , as I put in my post, that Child of the moon was written with Candy in mind.....I just wondered if it was true.
When I saw the film in 1969 it really grabbed me, especially the humour. It also had a big star cast and I found it very strange that although it was rubbished by critics, that it never to this day found it's way onto video in the uk.

Hi Percystokes,
thanks for the info. No wonder they didn't bother going ahead for just 2 grand! The Child Of The Moon rumour is interesting (pretty close title to the track that did appear: Child Of The Universe) and has the right kind of vibe so maybe.

It's not that strange that it hasn't come out on video in the UK: there are loads of films, many far bigger than Candy (several on my list above) that still haven't had a release in the UK. 'Performance' hasn't even had a dvd release here yet though it is supposedly on the cards.

Hey Josh, I just thought of another one that's pretty good. "The Party" with Peter Sellers. It's not rock n roll, but it's campy 60's and VERY silly.

Birdy num nums.
