How did I know MLC would list Taylor at the top and not mention Keith, Ry Cooder, BB King, Chuck Berry, Muddy Waters or so many others that have contributed to make the Stones sound what it is. Funny
----------------------------------------------------- Oh, give me the beat, boys, and free my soul I wanna get lost in your rock and roll and drift away
Keith Richards Johnny Thunders Mick Taylor James Williamson Mick Ronson Ross the Boss(the Dictators) Steve Hunter/Dick Wagner(cheating here-the Lou/Alice mid-70's tag team) John Perry(the Only Ones) Clarence White Johnny Winter
and of course there's Hendrix,Page,Beck,Townshend,Eddie Hazel,Wayne Kramer,Duane Allman,Greg Ginn,Ronnie Wood(Faces-era),Joe Perry,Gary Louris,Richard Lloyd,Richard Thompson...10 is not enough.
Jimi Hendrix Eric Clapton Pete Townsend George Harrison Jimmy Page Eddie Van Halen Carlos Santana Lindsay Buckingham Joe Perry Mick Taylor Stevie Ray Vaughn Keith Richards OK I had to go to top 12!!!!
Ron Ashton (stooges-fun house & 1st lp)....Steve Jones (thunders-berry influence, but thats good)...Michael Leigh (unsung axe slinger from the Lazy Cowgirls)...Robert Johnson...Ariel Bender (mott the hoople)...Richard Thompson...Peter Greenberg (DMZ - american "stoogy" garage band)...Dave Davies (early lo-fi sound)...John Fogerty (nasty tone!)...Roger Mcguinn (if only for that Rickenbacher jangly sound)
Hendrix...so innovative...no body has come near him yet...he did it all with only a wammy bar and wah-wah peddle.
Jimmy Page...his influence is undeniable...BTW he wrote almost all of Zeppelin's first two albums...music and lyrics...and heavily contributed on all subsequent releases.
Eddie Van Halen...another who cannot be denied
Randy Rhoads...if he lived he might have overtaken Mr Van Halen...he had that much talent.
Robert Johnson...he had some serious technique...just ask the two at the top of the list and Mr. Richards
Eric Clapton...
Jeff Beck...
Mick Taylor...yep..he's better than Keef.
Keef...the King of the Riff
Slash..not bad for being self-taught...a definate style of his own
Although I already mentioned 15 there are a few more that are indipensable. Johnny Thunders and Steve Jones. hey don't forget Steve Stevens. he was great in the 80's. But there are the two tagteams Kramer/Fred Smith and Hunter/Wagner. Both rock it hard. And Quine need sot be on here. Plus James Williamson, mentioned several times.
Eddie Van Halen only had piano lessons. Keith never really had lessons, just tips from guys at art school. I think most blues guitarists never really took guitar-classes.
Jimi Hendrix Eric Clapton Mark Knopfler (I can't believe he's not on anyones list) Lindsay Buckingham Carlos Santana Pete Townsend Jimmy Page Neil Young Mick Taylor Mick Ronson (Ziggy Stardust and then later live stuff w/ Ian Hunter unfortuneatly deceased now) Keith Richards
To me these are the guitarists that have had the most impact in the last 35+ years.
