Licensed drug could reduce SARS-CoV-2 infection by up to 70 per cent, reveals study

A licensed drug normally used to treat abnormal levels of fatty substances in the blood could reduce infection caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus by up to 70 per cent, reveals a study in the laboratory by an international collaboration of researchers.

The research team, led by the University of Birmingham and Keele University in the UK and the San Raffaele Scientific Institute in Italy, has demonstrated that fenofibrate and its active form (fenofibric acid) can significantly reduce SARS-COV-2 infection in human cells in the laboratory.

Importantly, reduction of infection was obtained using concentrations of the drug which are safe and achievable using the standard clinical dose of fenofibrate. Fenofibrate, which is approved for use by most countries in the world including the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the UK's National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), is an oral drug currently used to treat conditions such as high levels of cholesterol and lipids (fatty substances) in the blood.

'All the beds are taken up by Covid victims': Hospitals in the South are running out of space or staff

Coronavirus

Covid-19 hospitalizations are reaching all-time highs in parts of the South, with some patients unable to get the care they would normally receive.
Susan Walker has been calling out-of-state hospitals trying to get help for her husband, who did not get vaccinated against Covid-19 and is now in a medically induced coma. "He is on a ventilator and in dire need of an ECMO treatment, which is not available at the hospital that he is in," the Florida mother said Sunday. "All the beds are taken up by Covid victims also getting ECMO." An ECMO treatment uses external machinery that can function as the heart and lungs. It's been used in some severely ill Covid-19 patients, including young adults. "We have searched every hospital from the south of Florida to the north part of Florida" trying to find availability, Walker said. "To transfer him to a hospital in Florida is next to impossible."

Across the country, states are struggling to fend off the Delta variant -- the most contagious strain of coronavirus yet. But the situation in particularly worrisome in several Southern states. Louisiana set a new record for Covid-19 hospitalizations last week. Florida's hospitalizations recently jumped 13% above the state's previous peak on July 23, 2020, according to a survey by the Florida Hospital Association. The FHA said it expects 60% of the state's hospitals to face a "critical staffing shortage" by this week. And at Houston's United Memorial Medical Center, "We have no beds. The emergency department is full of patients just waiting to be able to get into the hospital," Chief of Staff Dr. Joseph Varon said Sunday morning. "Over the last 12 hours, we have lost more patients than ... in the last five to six weeks."

--------------------------------------------------------

More hospitalizations and deaths expected

The US now is averaging more than 100,000 new Covid-19 cases every day -- the highest in almost six months, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.
Because it can take days or weeks for some Covid-19 cases to lead to hospitalization or death, doctors are bracing for an ugly repeat of scenes from 2020. "It's bad. For me, this is a deja vu of what we had last year," Varon said. "And the worst part about this is this was foreseeable. And this was preventable. So not only are (we) exhausted, we're annoyed. And we're annoyed because people are not doing the right thing." The vast majority of those getting hospitalized with or dying from Covid-19 are not fully vaccinated, the director of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said last week. And Americans who have already had Covid-19 shouldn't assume they don't need a shot. For adults previously infected with Covid-19, vaccines give better protection against reinfection than natural immunity on its own, according to a CDC study published Friday. The study suggests people who got Covid-19 in 2020 and didn't get vaccinated were more than twice as likely to be reinfected in May or June 2021, compared with people who also had Covid-19 but were later fully vaccinated. "If you have had Covid-19 before, please still get vaccinated," CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky said Friday. There is no minimum time to wait between recovering from Covid-19 and getting vaccinated, the CDC said. "Getting the vaccine is the best way to protect yourself and others around you, especially as the more contagious Delta variant spreads around the country," Walensky said.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Level of community spread varies across US
These categories, issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, are based on county-level data on the number of new cases per 100,000 people and the test positivity rate during the past seven days.

----------------------------------

By the looks of that map, it's no wonder why so many concerts and tours are being canceled or postponed again...

I've talked to some folks in NYC this week and they are peeved by the return to masks mandate. They all agreed that they wouldn't have taken the vax in the first place if they'd had known that they would be looking at square one again, because they don't believe it's been tested enough. They only got vax'd so as to no longer have to wear a mask, and they refuse to be told to have to put it back on. They're p'd at the flip-flop mentality coming out now.

No, but their rates are higher and private companies can choose to test and not hire.

Can you imagine getting vaxxed twice, with your only incentive being to not wear a mask? Howz about doing it to stay the hell off the ventilator? The mask thing was a bonus!

More than 400 universities are requiring Covid-19 vaccines. But the murky threat of fake vaccination cards worries some students and experts

Fake Vaccine Cards

Students at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill can voluntarily share their Covid-19 vaccine status with administration, but those who show up on campus unvaccinated or choose not to disclose their vaccination status will have to get tested for coronavirus weekly. When apprehensive students started approaching Benjamin Meier, a professor of global health policy at UNC-Chapel Hill, about their peers buying fake vaccine cards, he began to worry about the effectiveness of university policy. Classes at will begin on August 18. "(Students) explained to me that they can easily purchase fake vaccine cards," Meier said. "I asked, 'Do you know students who have submitted these to the university?' Every one of them did." A spokesperson for UNC-Chapel Hill said they have not found any instances of students uploading fake vaccine cards. The spokesperson did not respond when asked how the university distinguishes between real and fraudulent vaccine cards in photos.

Vaccination cards were not designed to be long-term proof of Covid vaccinations, according to the Federal Trade Commission. The cards can be easily forged but it's a federal crime, which is punishable by a fine and up to five years in prison for forging government seals found on the card. Forging a card could also violate university rules and students could face punishment from their schools as well. But as thousands of students plan to return to primarily in-person instruction over the next few weeks, identifying fake cards through the photos in online portals may pose a challenge for university administrators. "We were talking about handing out fake vaccine cards as a form of protest to make it clear to the administration that if they did end up trying to mandate vaccines, that the students will and can find ways around that," said Dylan Dean, the chair of Young Americans for Liberty at Montana State University. "I chose against doing that because it is a crime."

More than 400 colleges and universities across the country are requiring students to be vaccinated before returning to campus, including Duke University and the universities of Illinois, Pennsylvania, New Mexico and California. While some universities expect students to be fully vaccinated by the time they arrive on campus, others only announced their requirement policies in the past few weeks and will allow students to receive inoculation by a certain date. Many of these universities also have vaccine exemption applications for students with religious or medical opposition to getting vaccinated, but students ideologically opposed to the vaccine could face disciplinary action or be barred from enrolling if they do not provide proof of vaccination and are not exempt, according to policies at Duke and the University of California system. And as the Delta variant continues to hike up Covid-19 case numbers, Eric Feldman, a professor of medical ethics and health policy at the University of Pennsylvania's law school, worries about the unquantifiable threat of fake vaccine cards. "It's really hard to know how many of them are around," Feldman said. "It's inevitably dangerous, and it's not going to be easy to root out. I worry if this will become a widespread phenomenon. But how many there are, and how much of a risk they pose -- we really don't know yet."

College students have somewhat normalized the creation of fake IDs to buy alcohol, and the idea of fake vaccination cards isn't far from that, Meier said. Young adults have also lagged behind in vaccination rates, according to a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report published in June. Almost a quarter of young adults between the ages of 18 and 25 are still hesitant to get the vaccine, according to a study published in the Journal of Adolescent Health in July. University mandates could help change this rate, and many students still want to create a safe environment for their peers, Feldman said. "What (fake vaccine cards) result in is those who are unvaccinated and untested being in environments where they could be carrying and spreading the virus," Feldman said. Simon Palmore, a junior at UNC, said the university's previous Covid policies have been risky, like when the university opened in-person last fall and had to transition back online after a few weeks of rapid Covid spread."?I?t's easier to view these things through the lens of like, 'What will I be able to do, will I be able to go to in-person classes, will I be able to go to parties, will I be able to eat in the dining hall?'" Palmore said. "But you really have to remember that, with each little failure the university has with Covid, people are actually getting sick."

JAZZ FEST 2021 WILL NOT OCCUR IN OCTOBER DUE TO COVID-19 CONDITIONS
2022 JAZZ & HERITAGE FESTIVAL SET FOR APRIL 29 – MAY 8

As a result of the current exponential growth of new COVID cases in New Orleans and the region and the ongoing public health emergency, we must sadly announce that the 2021 edition of the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival presented by Shell, scheduled to take place October 8 –17, 2021, will not occur as planned. We now look forward to next spring, when we will present the Festival during its traditional timeframe. Next year’s dates are April 29 – May 8, 2022.

Ticketholders for both Festival weekends (including those that rolled over their tickets from 2020) will receive an email this week with details about the ticket refund and rollover process. All Wednesday, October 13 tickets will be automatically refunded.

In the meantime, we urge everyone to follow the guidelines and protocols put forth by public health officials, so that we can all soon experience together the joy that is Jazz Fest.

This is the reason why Jazz Fest New Orleans 2021 was cancelled:

Gov. Edwards issues mask mandate for Louisiana as COVID-19 hospitalizations reach new highs (nola.com)

The mask mandate is back in effect for Louisiana amid a catastrophic surge of COVID-19 infections, and hospitalizations from the virus are the highest they have been since the pandemic started.

Gov. John Bel Edwards issued the executive order Monday afternoon and said his decision was guided by data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Louisiana Department of Health, which reported that more people are currently hospitalized from the virus than at any other point in the pandemic. He also reported 28 new deaths over the weekend. The death toll is now at 11,026.

"We're the worst in the country in terms of this COVID surge, and that is because of the Delta variant, which is a game changer," Edwards said.

Despite the widespread availability of the vaccine, Edwards said only 37% of Louisianans have been fully vaccinated.

For months, health officials have warned that the Delta variant of the virus gripping Louisiana is more contagious and virulent than earlier strains — and more likely to send people to the hospital with severe symptoms.

Hospitals across the state have neared their capacity, and emergency responders are struggling with limited resources, including ambulances, to keep up with the demand to treat patients.

Most infections that require hospitalizations are occurring among the unvaccinated, according to LDH; 90% of those being admitted to facilities have not received the vaccine.
