I consider Whip is by far the most exciting number on Some Girls.
Keith and Ronnie shine: only two chords, A and D, and a crescendo that has is absolutely out of this world. Charlie's work in the last two minutes is amazing.
Pure joy! 100% rock and roll. Unique rolling stones!
Respectable has a slighly different feel. Maybe because the main rythm guitar is Jagger's. The first impression is that it's more "straight" than Keith's tm r'n'r (this is also true for most of AB
. But if you try playing it, by the time you punch the D chord of the intro, you will love it. Again some superb guitar work by Ron and Keith. The opening on the E chord always reminds me of the same opening on the E in Led Zep's Rock and Roll.
Both songs are not easy to play live. They don't have a beautiful melody you can relay upon, nor a characteristic chord sequence, a trademark riff or a sing along chorus. I mean, even if you are on a bad night, people will always get into YCAGWYW or Start Me Up or Ruby Tuesday.
You can't afford to be on a bad night if you have to play whip and respectable. If the band lacks energy, these two numbers fall apart. Just listen to Respectable on no Security: it is so flat that it is unlistenable!
