OT: Steve Miller & John Fogerty at the O2 - 25/10/218

Anyone else go to this ?

I thought Steve Miller was simply fantastic. It was a joy to see him here in London, the set was great, he might be getting on in years - but remains as good as ever.

I have seen John Fogerty several times now here in London over the last ten years or so, but last night I found massively disappointing. Didn't really rate the band, most definitely did not rate the guests, and I also thought the sound was badly off. Way too loud, and very trebly and curiously muddied. All in all, very poor as compared to previous London performances.

What a great show, two superb American guitarists regaling us with stories from their past and playing some mean guitar.

Some people call him the Space Cowboy.........

Playing his 19 string (!) electric guitar/sitar purchased in Chicago in 1965 for USD150.....

Followed by John Fogerty on the Bayou.....

A cool tribute to New Orleans......

Not much 'regaling' from Fogerty, the man hardly speaks ! And I don't if anyone near where I was (row M block 101) felt the same about the sound, but in that part of the arena - it was strangely poor. What was it like on the floor at the front of the stage ? Chris ? Or in block 112 - another Chris (Egan) ?

I think previous Fogerty excursions to the UK have produced much better shows, I am thinking of Wembley Arena about ten years ago in particular. Stunning.

I enjoyed both performances although I also prefer Steve Miller’s to John Fogerty’s. A great rock and blues set with some pop flavour. Fabulous talk, too. He deserves a minor legend status.

The only time I saw John Fogerty before is 2012 Hard Rock Calling, the night The Boss and Macca’s rare stint together was infamously cut short due to the curfew. I don’t think last night’s show was lesser in quality than that undercard appearance in Hyde Park. Bit louder and tarted up yes, but still energetic and entertaining. Playing tunes (a number of well-known titles among them) one after another with short or no intervals — part of the reason he didn’t speak much — was so exciting and uplifting!

I saw Miller’s set from row M block 416 (of all positions) and the sound was surprisingly good — I almost felt fantastic, believe it or not.
Then I moved to row A block 405 — I was free-upgraded as it wasn’t a full house — for Fogerty’s set. The sound where I was relocated to was so-so, just about acceptable if not the worst. Certainly worse than Miller’s set. Not sure the difference came from my new position or Fogerty’s PA/sound mixing. The view was not any better on level 4 wherever you were, either. I wish I hadn’t changed the seat TBHWY.sad smiley

He did regale us with the fact that his Rickenbacker was the same one he played at Woodstock........as was one of his amplifiers!
Anyway, the sound was really good from our front of stage vantage point. I actually preferred this JF performance to his previous Wembley outing. The New Orleans tribute with the brass section parading through the audience was fun if a little bizarre. The strangest moment for me was when he decided to do a cover of 'Rocking All Over The World'. A fine song which only the mighty Quo can really deliver IMHO.

Steve Miller ain't no Joker, he rocked!

Interestingly, I saw both artists (for the first time) over the last year or two (at different times playing in the same venue) in upstate, NY where I live.

Steve Miller was the headliner and his opening act was Peter Frampton. I didn't know what to expect but Miller put on a great show and the playing by him and his band was top-notch.

This last summer I saw John Fogerty (who has been on my bucket list to see) who was the opening act for ZZ Top. It should have been the other way around as Fogerty was so good, he should have opened for ZZ.

Boy, what a catalogue of hits both Fogerty and Miller had in their arsenal. So glad I went to see these great musical icons!

I really enjoyed Steve Miller, but I don't know what happened with the sound for John Fogerty but there were sound recs pulling and pushing cables just behind the bass player for a good half an hour. What on earth was bringing his son on all about ? Sorry not to meet up but I don't think I could have managed a full circuit of the O2 during the break. Glad to have seen Fogerty though, but a bit disappointed to be honest.

Satisfied since 1976

Yep, he did indeed. I guess he's entitled to play it on that basis! Still didn't sound quite right though......

Saw both Miller and Fogerty this year in Abbotsford near Vancouver. Miller had Peter Frampton opening, an ok show but too long. Only know a couple Frampton songs. Steve Miller was too long, too. A guy who I would only want to hear warhorses! A number of people left before the end when he played hits like The Joker and Jet airliner.
Fogerty was a few months ago, second time he played Abbotsford in about a year and a half. I knew almost all the songs and the crowd had a good time. One of his sons plays guitar and another came on and sang a song. Yes, he played Rockin All Over The World. I'm sure very few in North America know that Status Quo plays it (or even who Quo is)!
Similar to Springsteen playing Blinded By The Light, Because The Night or Fire, all songs he wrote which were made famous by other artists.

Well, your thoughts are about the same as mine Chris. Glad to hear that someone else thought there were sound issues, I thought I was going nuts - but obviously not. And I agree with you, what the hell was bringing half the family out on stage all about ? Not really what the majority of punters wanted to see/hear ...

Anyway, Steve Miller was just great. So polished these days, fabulous. One of America's greats. Fogerty is also great mind you, but with the benefit of having seen him a a few times now, I think this particular line up and show is simply not as good as what he's done in the past. But what a singer/songwriter he is, just awesome. Can't take that away from him ...

What a band CCR were ... sigh !

Steve Miller has sold millions of records, but doesn't really get the critical respect he deserves.

I loved his comments when they finally inducted him in the RnR HoF.

My favorite track by him is "Heart Like A Wheel," which wasn't even a big hit.

The single edit from 1981 turns it into the kind of precise but joyful gem of a rock n roll record that could have been made by Buddy Holly.

Can't believe you didn't enjoy it Paul. For me it was one of the top 10 gigs I have seen in my life - that good. Having his sons in the band, particularly the one who played guitar, was an absolute joy to see.

I guess you must have had a lousy ticket. I was lucky enough to be in the front row so that perspective always helps. I have seen bands there from way back in the nose bleeds like the Stones and Prince and the sound just doesn't translate.

Shane Fogerty has been a staple in John's band for quite some time now. Mediocre player at best, but it's still nice to see the love between them. Did John tell his "Woodstock" story? "The Grateful Dead put 400,000 people to sleep!"

Seen John many times. Once at the Beacon, he was being heckled by some drunk sitting behind me. When John started his usual tribute and dedication to his wife, Julie (which I admit is bathroom break for me), the guy yelled "NOOOOO!". John was unfazed and then went into a scorching "Grapevine". The drunk was thankfully escorted out.

John's autobiography is a great read, by the way.

Er no ... I had a brilliant ticket thanks. You should know me by now, I don't DO lousy tickets !! I was a few rows up in block 101 nearest the stage, second best position after front row floor.

I stand by what I say. Steve Miller was fantastic I thought, and John Fogerty was OK, but in my opinion the show was simply not a patch on previous shows he's put on in the UK. And I'm not the only one that thought there was something up with the sound. All in all - a wonderful gig, but JF was a little disappointing, that's all.
