This is bound to be a controversial issue, but what is your favourite Stones song. Look at it from a complete package...i.e. entertaining and musically stimulating.
I'm curious to see what the sentiment is out there.
"Gimme Shelter" is the Stones' masterpiece. If I had but one record with which to explain the meaning of the Stones and to justify their place in the rock pantheon, this would be the one.
It's an extrordinary distillation of apocalyptic blues imagery, ideally suited to the moment of its release--and to this moment, for that matter. "Gimme Shelter" doesn't sound like a blues and it doesn't sound like any other rock'n'roll band. In fact, it doesn't really sound like any other Stones recording.
It's as if everything the Stones ever cared about was swept up for one moment in a perfect storm of a record...and then vanished.
"Jumpin' Jack Flash" is the quintessential Stones anthem (much more so than the overrated "Satisfaction") with one of the greatest intros in the history of rock 'n roll. It is a tribute to surviving against the odds, and to this day, I still get a thrill after those last Keef guitar strums in the intro when Mick's voice comes in confidently stating "WATCH IT !".
Rev. Robert W. also makes an excellent argument for "Gimme Shelter"...and for the reasons that he states, I would rank it as the Stones' #2 greatest song.
Satisfaction - best rock 'n' roll song of all time by the Stones or anybody else. It perfectly sums up the rock 'n' roll attitude - rebelious, unsatisfied with the status quo, contemptuous of authority, full of frustration and righteous anger. And it's got that killer riff, plus it was the first really massive worldwide smash single the Stones had. It established the Stones as one of the top groups in the world, a position they've never relinquished. As diehard fans we've all heard it so much we've become a bit jaded, but there is a reason it is still being played 40 years after it came out.
P.S. Jumpin' Jack Flash is a close second, and Gimme Shelter ain't far behind.
