feeling sorry for people who have lost the ability to actually experience something live
That is ridiculous.
I have been going to concerts for 45 years and started taking pictures wit ha good 35mm camera after 10-15 years... and started capturing video about 15 years ago when mini cams were able to capture dang good video.
I have always been perfectly able to "actually experience something live" while capturing pictures and video too. I don't watch the show through the tiny screen... I hold the camera off to the side... screen turned off... and I am rocking out... having a blast. Then go home ans see it all again. I tis too much fun!
I guess some people can do more than one thing at a time... and some can not.
I guess you're right, like the people who can watch porn, text and drive at the same time, all with 100% of their focus on each. It's all about multitasking.
The difference you refer to is between people who believe they can focus 100% on more than one thing at the same time, and those who realize that that is an impossibility. It's the difference in two definitions of what it means to actually experience something. It means different things to different people, as you say.
I have been doing shows like this for 30 years... I do it all then some... and then I go home and see the show again. If you cant do it, that has nothing to do with me.
You didn't explain how you are not a hypocrite hating people who record/post and then you happily watching their efforts.

Saw The Pretenders the other night.
"Photography Strictly Prohibited" signs were posted at all entrances. Chrissie Hynde made a point of enforcing that policy early in the show - "Put those f*cking things away or I'll stick 'em up your ass."
Didn't see any phones after that... ; )
Also name checked the Stones in her rant - "Saw The Rolling Stones with Brian Jones. No phones!"

Speaking of Martin Chambers, had a brief conversation with him the other night.
Band's got a busy year planned. They did a month of shows in Latin America supporting Phil Collins ahead of the current run of US dates.
Back to the US in June for Arroyo Seco and some other headline dates. They're even opening for Def Leppard and Journey at some stadium shows.
Then home to the UK for a tour with Simple Minds.
That's a lot of potential CH rants... ; )

Even if you're not bothering anyone else, why can't you just be in the here and now?? Too weird and by the way, imho the videos done by regular folk suck when compared to a professionally made films. Same with photos. I know it's no longer my world but that's just how I feel.

People have always taken photos or shot footage at concerts. Some bands have even appealed for fans to submit such footage or photos. Check out the Beatles Eight Days A Week. Without fans a lot of that film wouldn’t exist.
If I want to take a picture on my phone at a concert it ain’t anyone’s business but my own. We live in 2018 not 1972 and I have no responsibility to comply with some old farts idea of how to behave at a concert.

Jack White is playing Lollapalooza in Chicago which is a large festival- so good
luck on the cell phone ban at this stop.

The Stones have not said that they have issues with people in the crowd using cellphones to text and take photos. Other artists have. Therefore, if it’s an issue to the artist(s), it’s not fair game, IMO.

I object to all people (bv included, if thats the case, although he has a great website to run) who take more than "one or two" pictures during the show of course. And that is the problem with smartphones. The option to put your pictures out there, instantly. Not worrying the people around you, the people you are blocking the view, etc. Filming is even worse. If live music is something you care about, you go to the show. If you can't make it, because its not in your town or country or continent, wait for them or buy a dvd.
But do not try to catch a glimpse of real live music on shaky videos on persicope, fading away ervey two minutes.
But that is just my humble opinion, and I am grateful some artists start to ban smartphones, because most people are already numbed out by technology.

My point was whether the people on here who object to people taking photos etc also object to the photos taken by bv. Or do they merely object to a mere mortal taking a picture or two on their phones
