Keith to Scotty Moore: 'well, my lead singer is still alive'
Moore: 'what's his name?'
Keith: 'Can't remember!'

There's really nothing that's compares to Jagger. Iggy Pop is good as well but he can't carry a 3 hour show. Axl Rose was fantastic in the '80s.

Mathijs

mick jagger is usually on stage now max 80 minutes of the concert

Here comes the false news

For me the term Frontman means one who is best known for fronting a band..
Wouldn't classify James Brown or Tina Turner as that, Bruce Springsteen, for me, also wouldn't make the list despite the E- street band. They would make the list of top performers, which would also include Paul McCartney, Elvis, Bowie etc.

My Top 5-
1- Mick Jagger
2- Peter Wolf
3- Freddie Mercury
4- Robert Plant
5- Steven Tyler

Joe Strummer was cool but no way better then Mick

Freddie Mercury if sill alive would be giving Mick a run for his money.

Freddie was equal to Mick when alive

Although I would probably give Mick the overall title, I'd say that Freddie Mercury, Prince, James Brown and Tina Turner would all be worthy contenders and it wouldn't take much convincing for me to change my vote to any of them. Peter Wolf would make a longer version of the list.

Having spent an evening watching Harry Belefonte control a 2,000 seat audience like a puppeteer (the band was in the orchestra pit), makes me wonder if HE might actually be worthy of the title. I'd need more than one night's data to be sure but, what he did that night has stayed in my mind for close to 30 years now. I can't say that about any other performer.

Peace,
Mr DJA

I saw the Clash live twice and they were totally charisma free. The closest to Jagger I've seen live is actually a woman, Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs (that I saw at the Fonda Theatre, of Stones DVD fame).

I saw them a few times back in the day also, and maybe we could describe them as anti-charisma. winking smiley
But there was a certain energy and devotion to their music that was inspiring and 'attractive'. Each time I saw them I felt drained and spent like I had just survived a hurricane.
And as I mentioned previously, never would really consider Joe Strummer a 'frontman' as the rest of the band were just as up front and important to the overall show and sound.
It was like being confronted and attacked by an entire gang vs. dealing with an individual gang member.

Now that James Brown and Prince are gone Mick Jagger is the king. After all those years, after thousands of shows, he has never fell down once physically and figuratively. Mick is the ONE.

Joe Strummer was good and all... but the poor guy only made it 50 years.

Elvis was good too, but he only made it 40 years.

My cousin Bobby was one the greatest front men of all time... but only did 5 shows... and a guys gotta last a long time and keep doing it to prove themself the Greatest, otherwise it is just right time/right place/right sound and got lucky... like the beatles.

As much as I love the Clash, I've never really considered Joe Strummer a 'frontman' in the traditional sense.
Mick Jones and Paul Simonon were just as important to their appearance on stage, and Mick Jones even sang lead on a number of their greatest tunes as well as writing them.

Long story short - Mick Jagger is the greatest - no question about it.

I've meant to ask this before but it seemed an odd question...

Has ANYONE ever seen Mick even so much as stumble or trip himself up in over 50 years of performing? I can't recall ever seeing it in any live footage.

Not that I have seen.
Mick Jagger is somewhat astounding. He appears to be more dedicated to appearing effortless at being so great at what he does than anyone I have ever seen or heard of. It is no accident he is still this good at 50-60-70 what ever age he is... he works his ass off.

Mick is "the natural"... He is a natural born great who also trains harder and works harder than anyone, and it makes him untouchable.

Dang it... hot smiley
Making me gush a like some teeny booper, blathering on and on...
I am too damned old and curmudgeonly to be doing this... yet... here I am

We are so lucky to have him and the band.smileys with beer

STONES!!!

PS
I think the clinching factor is how funny Jagger is. He has it all, he does it all... and HE IS FUNNY! I have seen him live so many times and on streams etc etc and etc, and at every live show he says something funny... not obvious slapstick funny... but Jagger dry wry sense of humor funny. It is priceless.

plus add in.... that he never gets preachy. Live Stones shows are about fun! I have never been to (or seen) a Stones show where Mick didn't ask "IS EVERYONE HAVING A GOOD TIME!!!???"

As a frontman?

From whatever angle you want to view it, it can be only Mick Jagger!

His position in the history of rock music is unique. There's no one who could reach him.

No doubt: It's him!

And, not to forget, he's an outstanding singer-songwriter as well.
