The only time I can think of him seeming a bit startled is with the groupies running on stage and jumping on him.

This sentence instantly reminded me of this video!

video: [www.youtube.com]
The visual I get from Mick and that is in the GS film during HTW when the girls tackle him, and he's bending over and singing.
The J Geils song I'd never seen. I know only ONE "Do I LOve You" song - and that is the Northern Soul classic by Frankie Wilson. One of my favorite songs in the world. [youtu.be]

J Geils were actually covering The Marvelows Song "I Do". Thanks for sharing the Frank Wilson tune... I did a search and found the original... COOL TUNE!

Peace,
Mr DJA

Keith to Scotty Moore: 'well, my lead singer is still alive'
Moore: 'what's his name?'
Keith: 'Can't remember!'

There's really nothing that's compares to Jagger. Iggy Pop is good as well but he can't carry a 3 hour show. Axl Rose was fantastic in the '80s.

Mathijs

when have the stones ever done a 3 hour show? mick jagger is usually on stage now max 80 minutes of the concert

More like 2 hours and 5 minutes.

when was that? He leaves 10 minutes or so for Keith. Another 10 minutes or so at various times added up. The entire band leaves at least 5 minutes before the encore. The shows are less than 2 hours total including the encore.

He did about 70 minutes in '72. It was great. Couldn't have asked for more.
At that time, like now, even with the King also in the Garden that summer, Mick Jagger was, to me, in the flesh and for total real, already long-gone and certainly present-in-the-flesh the BEST, or 'king' of rock and roll frontmen, I can't think of anyone else even close. Certainly, no disrespect intended, the Clash have understadably ferocious fans, but not Joe, no one really, has the command MJ has, and he's had different presenations and appoaches in different tours thru different decades now; but he's always been, and still is the most commanding in my experience. He can over-do it. He's a Leo and a bit the Clown, as the role demands, but he can really get down into it and it's really beautiful; even all his mega-staged big stadium moves; the guys a marvel. Funny ain't it? Cat can't even 'dance' per se...you know? but he's amazing up there out front.
I think he put James Brown and a lot of Tina Turner really deeply into his approach.

King of the frontmen, surely? About Commander:

- connection with the audience: almost none
- stage talk: almost none or nothing of importance
- dancing or showmanship: well, he has his own style...
- conducting the band: well, there is not much he can do there

Surely the magic is somewhere else...

Now that you put it like that....

-He seemingly never makes eye contact with anyone in the audience . I've been up front center several times and he's constantly looking off into the distance.
-He does crack an occasional joke and makes fun of "Rockin' Ronnie" during intro's.
-He used to be much more active, not so much anymore.
- When he plays the guitar himself - usually a simple rhythm pattern - he might set the tempo but Chuck is the main man.

You've never heard him say "here we go" before cues??

Just about in every show - multiple times.

Mick knows just what to do to leave the audience in awe. He's the best at that. He doesn't have to look people in the eye or give high fives to make a connection with the audience.

Perfectly said.

Beyond that... this thread became (actually was from the start) just another way for some of the usual suspects to bash on The Stones.

Mick Jagger has proven himself over and over... and is still doing it.

Mick Jagger is the greatest rock and roll Frontman ever. Period.

It's not even close. Jagger #1 by zillions. That said I saw the Clash approx 20 times and Joe was great.

I would say:
1 Jagger
2. Scott Weiland
3 Iggy
4 Ian Astbury

LOL, Weiland and Astbury; to me Weiland and Astbury aren't in the same class as the other two names. I had a much longer post but deleted it all because it was a bunch of stuffy mumbo jumbo...

Mick of course.

Mick infinity.

But there is a special place for Bruce Springsteen. I saw him on the Darkness tour in 1978 and it was the greatest concert experience of my entire life. I literally knew nothing would ever beat it. Several times I had shivers running up and down my spine. Being in the eighth row helped. If you read about the tour it is legendary.

And of course there is the 1975 (?) Rosalita video where the girls run up at the end of the song and almost fight each other to kiss him.

But nonetheless, Mick Mick Mick in an infinite loop.

So you are wrong. Not big deal.

Actually I somehow forgot about the real #2. Peter Wolf

James Brown
Mick Jagger both at their peak for decades

Then to my taste-
Dave Lee Roth in early Van Halen. He was having a blast and the Van Halen Brothers were jealous. So they split.

Axl Rose back in the day
Peter Wolf of J Geils was manic as hell back before they split. Great front man

From who I've seen in no particular order:

Mick Jagger
Bruce Springsteen
Brandon Flowers (of The Killers)
Adam Ant

Michael Stipe was pretty brilliant when I saw REM. He moved like a serpent.

Anyone mentioned Bowie yet?

Freddie Mercury with his half mic stick was pretty cool. AY-OH as he used to say.

George Michael had very good night club cool moves.

Prince blew me away.

James Brown sadly when I saw him was really high on something. It wasn’t good.

Iggy Pop of course.

Still though, Mick rules.

The Clash were great, Jones, Simonon and Headon all carried their own charisma and shared a bit of the limelight with Joe. In the Punk Rock world, Pete Shelley, John Lydon and Jello Biafra (Buzzcocks, Sex Pistols, Dead Kennedys) would all give Joe a run for the money.

Bob Marley was a great frontman, Burning Spear still is.

Great post. George Michael, good call. Totally natural performer. And Stipe - but I;d say only early on. When he still had long hair (and his damn cup of coffee with him), on stage.
I really do not agree with RedHot on Bono though. Its no anti U2 thing; I like them a lot. But IMO he doesn't have that effortless, fluid, sexy thing at all.

7. Ozzy Osbourne (Black Sabbath)
.........

Ozzy is far from great when performing live with respect to his vocals, but he certainly seems to be able to capture the crowd. Disclaimer: I am a slight Ozzy fan.
