The Rolling Stones All the Songs: The Story Behind Every Track

This has been translated in Dutch (The Rolling Stones compleet het verhaal van de 365 songs). It looks interesting. Does any have this book? Any comments? Good things? Bad things Any opinions?

Someone should compile Rene's exhaustive Track Talk threads into a single document. I bet that would be fascinating.

I flipped through it. I still can't get a clear answer on whether it was Bill playing that jazzy organ outro on Jumping Jack Flash. I'm surprised no one has ever mentioned it. It's a really cool element of the song and not a word. Bill has been listed before as playing organ on JJF, and no else has been listed as playing it.

Will have to purchase this. I'm still wondering about Start Me up. Chris Kimsey said he always knew it was buried there in the vault. That one version that wasn't reggae. My question is did they rerecord anything for this song in 1980 or was it just excellent production that made it sound so good.

I find it hard to believe that someone has managed to compile a book which gives accurate information relating to the writing of each song. The Stones themselves can't even agree on many songs and their own accounts vary depending on which decade they are interviewed.....I'm not saying it can't be done, just that I'm more inclined to think this is just someone who has trawled through a lot of interviews and patched it together.

The information is based on a lot of sources. A lot of it is based on Bill's book (Stone alone), Keith's 'Life', Stanley Booth (True adventures), a lot of interviews (mostly with Keith) and articles. I think no or very limited 'new' information.

Nothing new, but what I like is that it is put together really nice. One page (or more) per song, clear overview of musicians, producer, engineer. Then some info about the origin of the song (who wrote lyrics, what do they mean, when was it written, etc) and then some really detailed information about the production. All this is available in other books, but I have never seen it in a 'encyclopedia' format. And not everything will be 100% accurate of course, but most of it seems to be. If the writers are not sure (sources give conflicting information), they indicate this with question marks, or just mention it.

Furthermore they give some background on the albums and dedicate pages to people who were important to the Stones (e.g. Pallenberg, Jimmy Miller, Nicky Hopkins, Klein....)

I like the book and was surprised with the amount of pages and size of it.

I was very surprised (in a good way) when it arrived a few months ago. Way bigger thn I thought. But I like the book very much. Like the layout, the way the arranged every page etc. There seems to be some overlap with Andy Babiuk's great book because there are many shots of the instruments too.
In a way the book reminds me a little of a wild Stones website from years ago. It was a guy from Norway who had some very questionable theories and interpretatins on the Stones albums, but his site looked fantastic. The color themes, pictures, the flow.

I was browsing through the book and it was ruther funny.

The author isn't always sure about his information. He used these words many times: "maybe", "possibly", "perhaps", "probably".
It's like he's guessing all the time who's playing what. hahaha

I don't know. The book looks very cool and very good read. But I don't know if the information is all that reliable. smiling smiley

If I am asked I prefer Margotin/Guesdon's book by a mile.
I don't enjoy saying this because I have much respect for Martin Elliott.

Why do you prefer it??

And whats the difference to Steve Applefords older book: It's only RocknRoll-The stories behind every song? One more album?

No outtakes are included. They omitted tracks from videos/dvds and some live tracks.

Here are few others I noticed that were missing not inlcuding live versions of studio track.

The IBC Demos and Cops and Robbers from Grrrr! Super Deluxe Edition.

No Cracking Up from Love You Live.

No Like A Rolling Stone from Stripped.

Quite a few of the song listings have a ? next to musicians who may or may not have played on certain songs or played certain instruments on a given song.

I always prioritize seeing the band live over buying items related to the band. Time is precious, time waits for no one, c them now while u can. These are the memories u will treasure forever.

I thought the book is only about songs that the Stones wrote themselves ...
