From shows I've seen in person & on tape, Neil & Micah seem to have that elusive special chemistry despite the age difference.

Yes the 2015 NY/POTR tour was the best thing Neil did since the 1991 "Ragged Glory" tour.

Yeah the tour with POTR was brilliant. I caught 2 shows on the tour and there’s a was something special happening each night. I’ve seen a good few Neil gigs over the years and the Vancouver & Seattle gigs on the Rebel Content tour were amongst the best.

I got to see Neil with Pearl Jam as his backing band at the Reading Festival. That was a good weekend. Amongst the other highlights: Bjork, Guided by Voices circa Alien Lanes @ the tent stage & Foo Fighters first gig in England ever also @ the tent stage. Bodies were flying at that show! Most of the material was from the first Foo Fighters record, still Dave's best IMHO.

I was also at both those shows (in the pit, no less). Seattle was one for the ages...bust outs, deep cuts, long intense jams, and a rare double encore. The show clocked in at just under 3 hours with no break. Amazing.
Vancouver was good, but compared to the night before, it left me wanting. It was great that he changed 5 or 6 songs in the set, but it lacked the intimacy of Wamu (the stage was higher and the pit was bigger in Van, not to mention the sound wasn't quite there - and I thought the Seattle crowd was hipper too). They just didn't seem as 'on', although there were definitely moments. Shorter show, as well.
I was at the last show of the tour at Desert Trip, and although it was 'only' 2 hours (opening for Paul McCartney, let that sink in...), it may have been their best show, period. Cowgirl in the Sand was epic, and was used (in edited form) in that 'Paradox' movie, Daryl made for Neil. Of all the acts that weekend, Neil played it the least safe, with long jams and unheard new songs.
I caught the 2 Paramount Theater shows in Seattle in 2019, and it seemed they needed to shake off the (ahem) rust some. Much shorter shows, and although still rockin', they seem like an afterthought, now.

I must say, I’ve always loved Neil Young, but…but… but I have to admit, his voice as he’s got older, has lost a fair bit of timbre and now just sounds…whiny.

I wonder what the language in his contract selling his music says about specifically how his music can be used after he dies. With Neil Young's uncompromising views, I'd imagine managing his music would be more of a task than someone who isn't as outspoken. For example, if Neil were dead, would the owners of his music wage this same war vs Spotify?

Even though it happened a few years before I became a music fanatic, the way Neil Young & Tom Petty fought against the record companies gave them a lot of credibility in the underground scene that exploded with Nirvana. They were punk in some of their attitudes.
Neil Young is a one off, we’ll never see his like again. Just a monster of output.

Neil just has yet another new (old) album out: Summer Songs

He puts them out quicker than I can check them out ...
