Seems like Mike Scott's having a wee go at Keef in this new track.

It's a hell of a pass to Keith, to use the football terminology (if he comes up with something brilliant, that is) smoking smiley

It could be about Keith , and if it is its more than a wee go at Keith.

You Guys know i love Keith, but there is something about him that doesn't ring true. He has the charm of the Devil.

«Slagging Sgt. Pepper», «Falling off a tree», «Play me a riff», «As good as Wild Horses, only longer».

Who else could it be about? smiling smiley

It's not exactly subtle it is... and in my opinion it is in bad taste.

I mean I think it is one thing taking a pop at Keith for slagging off Sgt. Peppers, but the 'falling out of a tree' was hardly a 'trick' or showmanship - it had serious consequences...

Smacks of a publicity stunt in itself tbh. Poor lyrics, poor taste, poor song.

Indeed, and that's sad for a musician of Mike Scott's calibre, imo.

Official audio and a collage of Keith pics made by a fan, perhaps?

It's been posted on the official Waterboys YouTube channel and their other new videos are in a similar style.

Also on their official Facebook page.

Didn't mean it as a directive, Stone4ever -
just thought about that thread when I read this one.

Not exactly inspired on first listening. "Pool Hall Richard" did a much better job of taking the piss out of Keith.

Maroon 5 should record a new song titled "Moves like Richards"...

In this lyric, Mike is trying to push Keith to write something great. It’s not unlike his old Don’t Bang the Drum, which was a song about pushing himself to write something of societal value instead of only strutting onstage and beating his chest. It’s acidic, no doubt, but in the straight talking tone of “Life,” or say, Miles Davis’s autobiography.

It doesn't sound at all like a tribute, as someone posted/quoted above.

Has anyone read the comments below the YouTube video? Some of those are quite revealing, in the way the song is being interpreted.

It's kind of like Lennon's "How Do You Sleep" dig at McCartney -- a bitter critique/calling him out for something, etc. In fact, the vocal approach is quite similar.

I suppose you can't slag off everyone and everything left and right the way Keith does without expecting a little something in return.

Tell me Mr Charisma
What will your next trick be

Slagging Sgt Pepper
Snorting your old man's bones
Or falling out of a tree

Hold on Mr Charisma
You got something tasty up your sleeve

Something to bash your best friend's brain braying...(jagger?)
Or have we been deceived

I wish it was a riff
I wish it was a riff, a riff as stiff as a Teddyboy's quiff

I wish it was a song an elegant
song as good as Wild Horses but twice as long

Tell me Mr Charisma
What will your next trick be

Yes, Its like Keith really did sell his soul to the devil lol.

I think he has this strength of will, or strength of mind, a sort of understanding of something beyond this, obviously he is not prepared to reveal his source of inspiration. Personally i see him as a very spiritual meditative man, almost like a Buddha figure these days.

Yeah i think you are right, this is how i perceive this lyric.
Comes to mind Keith saying he has these three killer Riffs, could be Keith has saved the best till last. Who knows, but it would be his final ultimate trick if they come up with one last number one that the world loves.
Maybe another start Me Up or even better to set the world alight.
Is this the reason keith is making sure this album goes his way.

Man you gotta have a dream right Rockman winking smiley

It’s “something to match your best friend’s braying.”
